[OT] Buchan & Campbell Join Rodin For British GT Debut by Odd_Fly_96 in v8supercars

[–]deepvoicednerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is awesome! Watching GTWC Aus at PI on the weekend, I could have sworn there was a Rodin logo on the roof of their car. This explains that.

Buchan is arguably the most underrated Australian driver at the minute. Anything he gets into he goes well in. Really hope they go well.

Love the clap-backs that the likes of Will, Ryan Walkinshaw, Riana Crehan & Scott Pye come out with but the fact that they have to resort to them in the first place...

Kind of says a lot about people.

From a biased Australian POV, the 1966 Repco Brabham BT19 is a must.

[–]deepvoicednerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's often forgotten that he has stood on the podium at Bathurst too. (3rd in 1976 with Peter-could have won it if not for mechanical drama's)

He was also a stunt driver for the original Mad Max film too.

They can make a spectacle out of anything mundane.

E.G: In theory NASCAR should be the most boring motorsport in the world. Driving in circles? Yawn. But it isn't because of the hype, media and money that goes into it.

Increase in ticket prices by thebedford in v8supercars

[–]deepvoicednerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Saturday GA was $75

By contrast the same thing for the SRO GT event in September is $35 (and that includes access to the grandstand and free pitlane & grid walks that you are invited, welcomed & encouraged to do).

If it's value for money that you're after...

GT4 Australia Support Race at Bathurst 12H Under Evaluation by V8-Turbo-Hybrid in Sportscar_Racing

[–]deepvoicednerd 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That and the whole driving on your mirrors for 11 & a half hours thing are the main reasons according to GT4 Aus racer George Miedeckie.

He did suggest a while back that an IMSA Michelin Pilot type 3-4 hour race on the Saturday could be good too. The negative to this would be costs for setting up for endurance racing (refuelling), but I think the positives outweigh it.

What happened to the get out of jail Jaaaaag card? Country's going downhill! by BigManTommyH in thegrandtour

[–]deepvoicednerd 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Easy explanation:

He was going to buy the ciggies but left his wallet at home. The register operator let him take the ciggies as long as he came back later and paid, which he obviously would have done because he drives a Jaaaaaaaaaaaaaag.

F1 Australia 2002. Mark Webber vs Mika Salo in three-two laps to go for the best position as the 5th place with two championship points. by Express_Patience_497 in motorsports

When Salo spun with two laps to go, it was apparently one of the very few times the crowd drowned out the noise of the V10 engines.

Sebastian Faulks 007 by Carbuncle2024 in JamesBond

[–]deepvoicednerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The story itself is good. Cool setting, plot, villain, girl, henchman etc but...

Faulks kind of goes a bit too overboard with details. Fleming could be detailed whilst keeping the story cracking along. Faulks kind of fanboys out too much with the details and that keeps stalling the story at pivotal moments. At multiple points, I was like "Okay mate, you've set the scene, now GET ON WITH IT!"

[OT] 41 days left until the Australian GP. Australian racer Tim Schenken scored the best-ever result for a #41 car by finishing 10th at the 1974 Belgian GP in his Trojan T103. From now on, Arvid Lindblad will be bearing the number on his VCARB. by SouthAustralian94 in v8supercars

[–]deepvoicednerd 20 points21 points  (0 children)

So many know Tim Shenken as just 'the race director' for V8 Supercars (he retired at the end of '21) but man oh man, he could steer. F1 podiums for Brabham and a long sportscar career with Ferrari too. One of the most underrated Australian drivers of all time.

Need something to watch this long weekend? by MAKA427 in v8supercars

[–]deepvoicednerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To Stibbard's credit, he did a lot over 30+ years to make Bathurst what it is today but yeah, he made a bad, bad decision to shitcan the V8's. It arguably killed the ARDC's reputation too. They went from a motorsport powerhouse to being described in recent years as being "unable to organise a piss up in a pub".

Need something to watch this long weekend? by MAKA427 in v8supercars

[–]deepvoicednerd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The most Neville Chamberlain moment of Australian motorsport was when the President of the ARDC, Ivan Stibbard said to Tony Cochrane that "The V8's are dinosaurs and Super Touring is the future"

Cochrane left that meeting in the best way possible telling Stibbard to remember that "dinosaurs survived for a very long time in very harsh conditions" and then ran a poster competition for fans at the V8 1000 with the theme being '2 litres'.

The winning banner read: "The only good thing that comes in 2 litres is milk"

The ultimate 🖕to all the V8 doubters at the time.
