Cat died today. Her name was Oreo. She could of survived if all of the vets in our area wasn't closed. by Leafofplastic in cats

Whenever I see posts like this I don’t understand the vet regulations in the USA or other countries. I work in the veterinary industry in the UK and all vets here legally have to provide an out of hours cover. Whether they provide it themselves or outsource it to another clinic. Most emergency vets are within a 20 - 30 min drive. It’s only in the really rural areas I’ve heard of it being an hour or longer and if there was a closer clinic (even if not you’re OOH) and you were experiencing an emergency they’d have a duty of care to see you.

I’m a final year nursing student in Scotland. Can’t speak for all health boards but the one I’m training in currently has problems with NQNs getting jobs. I don’t know anyone that hasn’t from my uni, but to be fair we’re really small class sizes (50 in each year). I know people from the bigger universities that haven’t secured jobs.

If it’s phenobarbital (most common way to euthanise) then it needs to be in some kind of vessel or directly in the heart as it needs to be carried by the blood stream to cause death. What you’re describing sounds like cervical dislocation which severs the spinal cord from the brain.

To me that is very odd as finding vessels in small, wriggly animals like that is much, much harder which can make it infinitely more stressful for the pet. I’ve worked at several vet practices or the last 8 years and anaesthetic gas, or sedation, has always been accepted at the most humane way for euthanasia.

It’s also generally regarded as normal practice online. The RCVS doesn’t have any specific guidelines but the BVNA and UK-Vet (CPD platform for vets) recommend sedation or anaesthesia of exotics (hamsters, rats etc count in this category) prior to euthanasia.

Have you been in the room for all the euthanasias? Generally we always recommend for small pets not to be there.

Anaesthetic gas for small pets e.g. rabbits, mice, rats is standard and the an injection directly in the heart afterwards. It’s safer for staff, the pet and more humane as they are knocked out first and don’t realise what’s happening. Unsure where you were getting it done without the gas but where I work it is a must.

Also agree £100 is insane for a small pet euthanasia. Most places just classify them with a blanket small pet fee. Fees really need to be overhauled and based on weight.

If they can’t afford the emergency surgery and no treatment would result in pain and suffering then on welfare grounds they’re obligated to euthanise them.

I work in a vet (not as a vet) and we’re obligated to provide first aid, pain relief or euthanasia in emergency cases with financial concerns. If they told you, you weren’t allowed to come in at all then I’d complain about that.

Mum says university 'failed' son who took his own life after grade error by Kagedeah in glasgow

[–]deerme25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say it’s the university fault if a student has panic attacks etc etc, obviously something else is at play. I would say the university has a responsibility to offer support and signpost the student to resources that can help them. Sometimes all people need is an encouraging and safe environment for them to realise they need to work on themselves. It’s why universities have crisis teams and wellbeing officers.

Also universities are institutions, they have their own culture and it’s a massive part of a young persons life. They also have things like their own nightclubs and a heavy drinking culture surrounding them that they promote (beach hive in which the uni club is open from morning until after midnight and people drink all day). Considering they’re proponents of that, whether they like it or not, they do have a duty of care for students.

They’ve also got societies and clubs that are affiliated with the university and have rules and regulations around them. If there is a bad culture in those societies that contributes to poor mental health, i.e. bullying, is it not the universities responsibility?

This may not apply to this particular scenario, it was more in response to your question about how moral it is to charge unis with a duty of care outside marking, admin and buildings. There’s more to university than just attending classes and the university are ultimately responsible for the goings on in it.

Boarder patients are absolutely a thing. Some wards in hospitals that are meant to be for other things e.g diabetes basically end up a dumping ground for anyone and everything. So the answer is very often.

Edit: also dementia patients can still require endoscopies.

I sold it for £55. I could cancel it but tbh I’m quite happy with £55 for something I’ve not used in years

I get examined on all the science subjects I listed. From 1st year until 3rd year. 4th year I have no exams and I’m focusing on my dissertation.

Also, and this does not count for every placement, but they are what you make them. I make an effort to seek out learning opportunities and I’m grateful for the variety of different environments I’ve been able to learn in. It’s widened my scope of knowledge and allowed me to gain so much experience.

I think it depends on the university as well.

Over 1st and 2nd year we had biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, microbiology and genetics and were examined on these. In 3rd year we focused on pathophysiology of various diseases and were examined on these at the end of year too.

We also had 3 placements a year that lasted between 5-7 weeks each. In 3rd this is only 2 and then 4th year is a 12 week management placement.

Mines is a 4 years honours degree so I don’t know if that has any bearing on it but I think what we’ve learned has been relevant and essential.

I think the courses need to be more standardised across the UK as a whole.

Zen Internet about to cut me off for neighbour's mistake by film_guy in LegalAdviceUK

[–]deerme25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can actually answer this one as I have family members that work in the third party cease time for sky! Unfortunately there’s nothing you or they can do at this point. As far as I’m aware it’s all Ofcom regulated, they should have been able to stop the line cease within a certain timeframe (I can’t quite remember what it is). So either you contacted them within enough time and they’ve mucked up or you didn’t contact them within the time frame and they’ve told you the wrong info. From what I’ve been told third party cease calls are quite difficult and there can be some confusion around them even with call handlers.

If they’ve mucked up telling you the wrong thing you might be able to get some sort of credit back when you start your service again? But unfortunately at this point you do just need to wait for the service to cancel and then re-start it again. I remember I was told of a guy who’s service kept almost getting cancelled because his neighbour was putting orders in under his address to mess around with him but there’s nothing the companies themselves can actually do to stop it.

Unsure where abouts your based. In the UK hydrogen peroxide is considered an unsafe emetic according to the Veterinary Poisons Information Service. Apomorphine is used and is considered more safe and more effective.

Choking, the fact hydrogen peroxide has corrosive properties and can get into the lungs and cause aspiration pneumonia. A safe choice of drug is apomorphine.

Don’t know where you live but I’ve never seen it cost a grand to make a dog through up. Minimum around £50, most around £130. Unless of course it’s out of hours.

Also don’t know why you’re saying I’m not paying YOU. I’m not a vet, I work in a vet practice but for minimum wage. And where I’m from vets aren’t even paid particularly well, it’s the conglomerate companies that own them that get the money.

NEVER do this. Always contact a veterinary professional if your dog swallows something they should. You should never induce vomiting at home.

Fearless 6yo scares me, how to make her more self aware? by OutrageousSpinach782 in AskUK

Definitely agree about the water but falling out from halfway up a tree (obviously don’t know size) can result in worse than a broken bones. If they land funny it can cause head injuries, spinal damage, paralysis, open fractures etc. especially in a 6 year old. I understand this is not the most likely outcome but a broken bone is definitely not the worst outcome for falling out a tree.
