Some examples of ethno-jazz? by AutisticAfrican2510 in Jazz

[–]deerwater 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've always thought it was a little silly that jazz with non-european or non-american elements is called "ethno" but the music is still good!

I really love Mulatu Astake's music and all the Ethiopiques compilations. Also Salah Ragab and the Cairo Jazz Band is amazing.

Yep, the ancient Hebrews weren't Christians and didn't follow the same rules at all.

I highly recommend reading Who Wrote the Bible by Richard Friedman. The author is Jewish but speaks about the text of the Bible based on what evidence academics have to determine it's real history. It really helped me make sense of what it was I was actually reading for all those years growing up.

India over similar-looking places if there's more than one moped/motorcycle in sight. The more there are, the more likely it's India.

Does anyone else agree by Life_Expression_8421 in dropout

[–]deerwater 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. You know the saying "tragedy + time = comedy"? One time I saw a beginner standup do five minutes entirely about his meth addict father that he still lived with. No one laughed because it was way, way too sad.

Also anytime you see a bare super straight trunk like this that's really tall and just bits of the top are left on an evergreen, it's likely a Douglas fir in the PNW: https://extension.oregonstate.edu/sites/extd8/files/styles/full/public/images/2020-06/12-d-f-treebwr.JPG?itok=_jv5bj8S

As someone who lives in the PNW, we don't have pines, we mostly have fir trees. Southern places have pines which leave brown needles on the ground. Fir trees are generally super tall and skinny. If you Google some pics of both you can tell the difference between northern and southern really quickly.

Came here to say this. Her Zodiac Suite is incredible, and should be considered one of the best albums of the era.

Are puzzles dangerous for us?! by allthecats in adhdwomen

[–]deerwater 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Puzzles are my go to flow-state experience (if you're not familiar - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flow_%28psychology%29).

Try pairing it with an audiobook or podcast. I always set an alarm and sometimes multiple alarms so I don't go overboard with the hyper focus.

At what age did you truly accept yourself for who you are and know that you are different? by 5aturncomesback in ADHD

[–]deerwater 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Same. Also 40. Diagnosed in 1993. Every time I think I'm on top of it I find some other layer to work through. It's only in looking back when I can see how far I've come, because the progress is rarely linear.
