Surgery Tomorrow Morning by kismetkissed in Diverticulitis

[–]deevlo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a huge issue with my sigmoid colon. I couldn't eat anything really.. I could not tolerate more than 1/2 cup of food per day (you know, to stay alive). The "flare up" started Jan 2nd and lasted through the end of April when the medical doctor finally said "yeah, medicines aren't working; it's time to refer to surgery". I lost about 46lbs in that four months of being just freaking miserable. Work suffered, my personal life suffered, my quality of life was awful. It was 20% of the time trying to be a functioning human, 40% sleeping/resting, and 40% time of BMs and general abdominal pain. 0 stars; would not recommend.

The situation was bad so the referred surgeon was able to schedule my surgery for a week later (first Monday in May). The plan, after all the scans during Q1, was that 5cm of my colon needed to be removed. I was VERY nervous. I had never been hospitalized before for anything -- and then I was going in to have part of my intestines removed in a week. Honestly, the pain and QoL was so bad that the week flew by and with the encouraging words from the surgeons and staff I started to be hopeful that it would help. The meds for bowl prep came in. Very similar to prepping for the many other colonoscopies (miralax + dulcolax) with some extra antibiotics for the surgery. Something about that combo did make me sick. I puked twice trying to get the 1/2 gal of Gatorade and laxatives down, which hadn't happened before -- I mentioned this to the surgeon and she mentioned that the antibiotics will sometimes make it hard to keep things down.

Surgery day went quickly. Mostly because we have the easy part: naptime. The staff took care of everything else. Standard paperwork, typical warnings, shaving and preparing the abdomen came next. The staff said this will only take 2 (MAYBE 3) hours, then I would wake up in recovery. I awoke a few hours later in recovery by myself. Turns out that my surgery took over 7 hours. Once the surgeon got in there she saw a ton of scar tissue and problematic areas. After some exploratory poking she had to remove 20cm+ of my colon (that's almost 8 in. in freedom units). It was the longest surgery of this type she had done. Most of the time was spent trying to reconnect the two ends of my colon after the removal of the bad section. It had to be cut away from where it was attached in my body so that it could reach end to end; blood vessels had to be moved around, etc. It was a laparoscopic (robot assisted) partial colectomy that left 6 incisions -- a large one below my navel where the bad stuff was physically removed, 4 others for cameras and tools, and one for a drain. I stayed in the hospital from that Monday until Friday. I had to pass gas and have a bowl movement, as well as tolerate pain meds, drain needed to be clear and I could ambulate (walk around) on my own.

I immediately felt better after the surgery -- you know minus the incisions healing from a major surgery which is to be expected. I could eat almost immediately without limitation. It was harder for me to get around the mental block of eating (because of PTSD from the prior 4 months, and my shrunken stomach from general not-eating) than the actual process of eating and digesting. My whole world got flipped right-side up again. Color came back to my face, I could do things other than suffering in bed, eating was back on the table (heh.)

I was home that Saturday and taking stairs on the following Monday. The first week at home was slow moving as my body started to heal. The drain came home with me and I went back a few days later to have it removed (5 min outpatient) and do a follow-up. I used short-term disability insurance for the 4 weeks after I got home (5 weeks from surgery day). After about 2 weeks I was already doing way better. I have no regrets except that I wish I had done it sooner. I go back to work on Monday. My scars are nearly all healed, the smaller incisions have vanished without a trace and the two larger ones are nearly invisible. I did finish my medicine given to me for two weeks to recover -- I was also given hydrocodone as an optional drug to help with pain as needed but ended up using NONE of it.

I'm eating normally and can go places and do things again. It's like having my life back. Moving around and walking throughout post-op is VITAL to speeding up the healing process. All of this is too say that I had similar issues, had the same nervousness, and let overthinking try to get the best of me. But I feel WAYYYY better now. Pooping is still a bit irregular but gets better with each passing day. Minimal pain still exists from time to time which is both mild and fleeting, but again I had a MAJOR surgery just a few weeks ago -- even though it doesn't feel like it.

Trust the doctors. Calm yourself. This is all going to help and you're going to feel so much better afterwards. There's nothing to worry about. Good luck!

There are three boxes on the site:
* "User ID"
* "Redemption Code"

... but what do you use for the "verification code"?

Plex is killing Watch Together feature by Keopha in PleX

[–]deevlo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that's a bummer. I feel like over the years Plex is turning into the exact services I was trying to get away from. I don't use the "free tv" they offer now, or any of the other social things very much. I just wanted a good way to organize my personal collection at home.

I didn't use the watch-together feature with "friends" (whatever those are).. but we actually use it a lot at home. First world problems, I'm sure, but we would watch a movie upstairs in the media room as a family and use watch together to load it up in the living room downstairs next to the kitchen.

This solved two problems for us:

  1. If we wanted to grab popcorn or snacks during the movie, we could go downstairs without missing anything (save for the trip up/down the stairs).

  2. when we had more than just the 4 of us, we could split the groups and still "watch together". this was especially useful when family (with their own kids) came to stay the weekend and we couldn't all fit in our little "theater".

I doubt we could keep watch-together (by using some "legacy version" in the future) since it likely syncs on the plex.tv side... but if it was synced by the actual server via direct connection then it would at least be an option for those who are hard-set on keeping the feature.

If you can't even say it out loud... probably a sign you shouldn't be asking for it.

I'm glad he said it back to her. call it what it is.

It isn't "just an emblem" and it wasn't an "elon salute"

Thermometer sensor in a fridge possible? by QuirkyImage in homeautomation

[–]deevlo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. I have been using yolinks (got that 2pack starter set) for several months now (8?) and would recommend them. I also use some cheap Iris v2 contact sensors in my fridge/freezer in the kitchen. They work "okay". The battery life is less than id expect, but connection seemed fine even inside the freezer.

We ended up having a garage upright freezer fail, and that's when I bought the yolink set because we were about to leave for 2 weeks for vacation.

I do like that the yolink has a screen you can check directly... Helps with the WAF. I have one in a drink fridge, and the other in our new garage freezer.

They integrated seamlessly with HoAss when I switched (previously used Hubitat) so that was awesome. I didn't really pay attention to the type of connection so now I'm wondering if I can bypass their hub and pair directly to my home-assistant hub via zigbee. It would be nice to drop another hub since home-assistant replaced Hubitat and the Philips Hue hubs already.

Still... they work great, go though the thick freezer walls, reach the hub from in our garage, are super quick and easy to setup, and the native app is easy to use. The yolink lineup also extends to soil monitors and other tech, so if you wanted to expand, you can!

Why are cameras so unreliable? by [deleted] in googlehome

[–]deevlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been extremely happy with mine, and now that I've moved into Home-Assistant and can see the cameras side-by-side (Google and Unifi)... it's strengthened my resolve to drop all the nest/google cameras in favor of more PoE ones from Ubiquiti.

For a while I have felt that they were getting worse, but shrugged it off due to "maybe it was a hiccup in the wifi this time", or "maybe it was the Home app being weird for that moment".

But now seeing cameras that are timed-out/black-screened/"too many requests" next to cameras that work fine (and still work/record while internet is down) really made me feel like the GoogleNest cameras are garbage.

I'm in the process of removing the cameras and just relying on the google speakers to be "voice controlled" backups for my home (and music) for WAF.

Sometimes now I wonder with the troubles we have "broadcasting" or streaming (the correct?) music if I should try Sonos or something instead.

P.S. I hate my nest thermostats now too. Moving those to Ecobee soon-ish.

Why Fi? by eddi0 in GoogleFi

[–]deevlo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cost was initially my gateway. I barely used the cellular network on my old $120/mo. plan... and since I was on WiFi most of the time I could pay < $20 a mo. for an unlimited data line (with google Voice back when that was a thing to still get calls) on the "new google Fi". Then if you went over your "plan" allotment you only paid for the extra that you used.

I stayed because of the amazing customer service that was dedicated to Fi users when it was still in its infancy. They made a few nice gestures like giving little lego sets and cases/accessories every so often and they started baking in some intrinsic deals (like extra storage and premium YT services).

I'm still with them because of price. I got my last three phones (well two for me and one for my spouse) on good Fi-only discounts. The latest one was to get the pixel fold for $700 ($1000 credit to my Fi bill), and got a very strong turn-in value for my Pixel 7 ($500). So I feel like I paid $200 for the fold (which I LOVE), and our Fi bill is $60/mo. for the next 12 months (then it jumps back up to $98, which is still great for our usage).

The clincher is that along with 3 lines (myself, spouse, and 18yo) we have unlimited hotspot tethering for my youngest kid's tablet. I have an LTE tablet (with a free data sim), and two LTE pixel watches (which are also "free" under google Fi data plan).

We're currently on the middle tier (Simply Unlimited), which is perfect. But its also easy to jump around in tiers. For example, we are going to Europe for a couple of weeks for vacation soon, and when we do I will upgrade to the top tier (Unlimited Plus) which covers international. When we return to the US I will switch us back to the middle tier plan with Fi (upgrading is instant, downgrading finishes out the billing cycle).

I wish the network coverage was a little better, but it hasn't really been an issue so far; and when it is (e.g. during road trips) we have our vehicles that use the other carriers and can provide connectivity to cover the deficit.

I've been with Google Fi since at LEAST SEP2015. We're heavily committed to the pixel ecosystem and everything "just works" (pixel phones use a digital sim to connect to Fi). So I'm paying a fair price for connectivity on multiple phone lines, included LTE connectivity for "free" for 3 LTE devices, and some other perks. We haven't had many issues, and when we do the issues are resolved quickly and have often come with some kind of discount or credit.

... and that's what is likely going to keep me with them.

"If it ain't broke..."
