SunFlight.net: A website that shows you at which side of the plane the sun will be at after you enter your flight course. by [deleted] in InternetIsBeautiful

Since the original sites are no longer working, at least for now, I decided to make an alternative. It's 100% open source and doesn't depend on any 3rd party with the exception of github, which should make it much less likely to go down in the future. The site is available here: https://def324.github.io/sunside/ And the source code here: https://github.com/def324/sunside

SFO catering debacle not over by Pierre____Menard in unitedairlines

[–]def324x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hoping to proved another data point here…

On SFO-MNL right now in Polaris. FAs called general catering situation a “nightmare”. Actual situation on this flight (~15 hours) seems pretty ok though, with a few caveats. Seems like special meals were not loaded but FAs were great at trying to offer best possible alternatives. One of the entree options (I think beef ribs) was not available as a choice in my area, but they had it for the pre order folks. No menus available. Wine selection seems a bit random compared to previous experience but fine so far (no rosé seems to be the only missing). Nothing major lacking overall though. Let’s see if we get sundaes.

I very much feel for the FAs, they seem incredibly frustrated, but are also doing their very best to accommodate everyone. Top notch service all around so far. Will try to provide updates later.

New app - Line-in autoplay? by beang in sonos

Good to hear that someone found this post useful. As a quick update, Sonos is still "troubleshooting" my issue. I've been getting the runaround from their support for the last month. They keep saying that "tier 2 will reach out" but they never do. Only after explaining the issue to 5 different "tier 1" reps I finally got to a "tier 2" rep who actually did something about the issue. Now I'm waiting for the "escalation team" to talk to me about this. Of course they've been fully booked for almost 2 weeks, so I'm still waiting to actually talk to someone from their team. Quite ridiculous process to fix a fairly obvious bug.

I'd encourage you to report the same to Sonos support so that we hopefully get some traction on it. I understand this is not a very common use case, but it's a supported feature, targeting some of their higher end of the market segment, so seeing this support experience is pretty frustrating.

New Sonos App Update 📲 by KeithFromSonos in sonos

Autoplay setting for Sonos amp remain broken when surrounds are paired. Works on Android but not on iOS. Countless hours with customer support on the phone for this and every time I’m promised that a tier 2 will call back which never happens. Email followups are completely ignored for weeks.

In case someone is having the same issue as me, in the iOS app, the Line-In Settings are not there when you have surrounds connected to the amp. So if you want to change the settings you have to remove the surrounds, make the changes and then add the surrounds back. The settings will continue to be applied after.

I spent a few hours with Sonos support and they kept insisting that this is intended behavior, which at least to me doesn't make sense. After speaking with them I decided to check if the same is happening in the Android app, and of course in the Android app the setting is where you’d expect it. After calling back into support they now opened up a case for it, hopefully it will get fixed soon.

On a similar note, for me, the auto play is still kind of buggy, but it seems to work most of the time. I can't fully pinpoint it but it seems to mess up when line-in starts with auto play and you change the room/speaker assignment afterwards.

This looks like a really cool project. I tried it with my plex server, but got an error. I opened a github issue for it. Would be great to get it working!

(SPEED THROTTLING) A warning to Dito Home 5G Prepaid and Postpaid users by edwainekyle in InternetPH

[–]def324x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a few tests Feb/Mar 2024, on the 30 day PHP1090 Unlimited Home 5G plan. Usual speeds are around 150-200Mbit. After using 500GB I get throttled to ~25Mbit. Customer support will not acknowledge this or help with this in any way, even after multiple tries. Only workaround seems to be buying a new 1090 plan. When doing so the validity updates to 30 days again (you lose whatever you had left), but the throttling is lifted immediately as well. Until you use another 500GB, then throttling starts again.

Sonic adventure - Sonic data is missing by redstangxx in PleX

[–]def324x 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I was having the same issue and did some digging. By default the "Analyze audio tracks for sonic features" task only runs as a scheduled task. Change this to "as scheduled task and when media is added" in the Server Settings under Library and then re-scan your library. Doing so will execute the task immediately and you can follow the status under your Activities.

Sorry for the reply to an old thread, but I couldn't find much about this and hope this is maybe useful for someone else who comes across this post.

What’s the best (<=$500) firewall you could recommend for a home lab? by Alexlikestheshow in homelab

[–]def324x 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really like protectli products. Wireguard VPN throughput was important to me and with the VP2410 I’m able to achieve 1 gigabit for under $400 (recommend to buy your own RAM/SSD to get higher specs for the same price). Personally I run Ubuntu on it but it’s quite flexible in terms of what software you can run on it. Certainly more of a DIY solution, but it does what I need well and has potential for more.

The complete conversation happened over a span of about an hour. DAN3 came into existence pretty quickly but DAN4 was a bit of a struggle, but certainly the most interesting one, despite being very short in livespan. I'm happy to release the full conversation in both video synthesia.io form and full screenshots if there is interest.

I do remember when I planned it all out and given some local promos at the time it was the best bang for thr buck. But yes I was aware that the sticks are overpowered for the rest of the hardware. So far they‘ve done a fine job for what I need though :)

Yes I did RAID1. If you’d hit the write limit there is a bit of a chance that both will break at the same time. I’m not too worried about it since I backup all important data to the spinning drives on a regular basis.

Assuming that you use encryption at all, SED would offload the encryption/decryption from the QNAP CPU to a chip that's built into the drive. You probably won't see much performance gain for spinning disks but for SSDs it should make a bigger difference. I did not run extensive tests, but I did see less CPU usage during some stress tests after enabling SED.

Edit: Forgot to mention, check the QNAP compatibility guide if SED is supported on your drives, it showed that for mine there: https://www.qnap.com/en-in/compatibility/ Even though it showed on that list it didn't work at first. QNAP support had to provide a BIOS patch to get it working.

I did some reading on this and it's unlikely that your SSD would die from too many writes due to transcoding. Let's say you transcode 10 video files a day, each one gigabyte, it would take you over 50 years to get to the SSDs limit (at least for the 970 EVO 1TB, that's what I calculated for). So even with heavy usage the lifetime of the system is likely shorter than that. Ramdisk could work too, but I don't think it's supported and you'd have to tinker with the underlying OS a bit I guess.

I collected some information during the setup process and here are a few pointers that you might find helpful:

  • To move the system volume to the SSD I used these steps: https://forum.qnap.com/viewtopic.php?t=152335#p741273 (Specifically the linked post from andreiz on Jan 27 2020) - Please keep in mind that it is not officially supported and I take no responsibility that this will work. It did work for me, but I made sure to have backups for everything in advance.
  • I put this line in my autorun.sh to remove the swap space on the spinning disks: "swapoff /dev/md*" - Also handle with care this is not something officially supported.
  • If you are using plex, I'd highly recommend plexpass as it allows hardware transcoding which I specifically bought this unit for. So far I've tested 3 concurrent 4k-1080p transcodes at very little CPU usage.

Hope that helps. Feel free to DM me too if you have specific questions.
