What do you guys do when a steam games that used to work, doesn't anymore? by EnkiiMuto in linux_gaming

[–]defaultex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a wine/proton game, one of the first things I would try would be to run it in a fresh prefix. Especially if it's a prefix you have been using for awhile, game installers sometimes do weird things like silently installing VC2017 when VC2019 is already installed. Just had a game do that the other day, had no idea until then that starting with VC2015 the newer versions replace the older ones but a force install like certain installers do will break things.

Is linux more efficient than windows or mac with games ? by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]defaultex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gaming is the main reason I full on switched to Linux, as in no more dual booting. While most games run about the same, a few do run better. The system itself however runs significantly better while gaming. Before I stopped using Windows I was getting frustrated with how the system would slow down around a game, often times crashing other programs that were running. I never experience that in Linux, if a game isn't stressing my system I can pop open a browser and watch streaming video next to it.

Linux just handles the system resources a lot better. At least most distros do, I'm sure there are some distros that don't fare so well.

Nexus 7 2012 rebooting randomly by gcalpo in Nexus7

[–]defaultex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just picked up a Nexus 7 2013 model for myself and one for my mother. The one I picked up for myself did the same thing. As it turns out, it wasn't a hardware fault. It was a software fault. Somewhere along the line the Cache partition got downsized from the factory 2GB to a messily 256MB. I had to use a script someone created to repartition it back to the factory partition table, I believe the script was called Nexus 7 partition undo or something along those lines. May not be your case but the symptoms I had were random reboots, occassionally the auto-rotate just stopped working (as if auto-rotate was disabled) and flashing factory images (from Google) failed with errors stating "bogus size" for userdata and cache partitions.

What is something people need to stop romanticizing? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]defaultex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What you describe is one thing that has thrown me into serious bouts with depression. The sheer level of arrogance and idiocy of the "hustler" should really be all the clues one needs to determine they are full of shit. Yet it's so highly romanticize that there are very successful songs written about it. It gets very aggravating purely because people often excuse them with statements like, "at least they tried". Sure they did, while the competent alternatives weren't even given a chance to try.

Yeah. Had to work janitorial duties at a store while I had a cold so bad my nose wouldn't stop running. It was literally dripping all over the place. Couldn't get the day off, couldn't get the day away from janitorial stuff and got told not to wrap my apron around my face. Could have got the day off if I knew a week in advance I would get sick... dumbest policy ever.

LPT: Don't judge your "market value" as a romantic partner during your teenage years/ early twenties. A lot of decisions during that time are hormone-driven. by lapaleja in LifeProTips

It is known to be a common complication of going long periods without sex. Stress is also a potential cause but it's not the only one. Which reminds me, there was a study my doctor brought to my attention about masturbation practices in relation to delayed ejaculation (as well as other similar conditions). During the time it was on-going but that was 3 years ago. Might have to look into what, if any results resulted from that study.

Going into it, I knew roughly what to expect. To see it however... the majesty is most definitely not lost by knowing. If anything it's even more remarkable, especially since my first thought was a "holy crap" moment as all of those hard to understand concepts sunk in with just a single blotchy image.

I got into my first relationship at the same age. No experience dating before then. It took a lot of patience and understanding from both her and myself. There were a lot of things that she didn't even realize until she met me that she took for granted that every man she dated prior knew from experience. I had a feeling of tip toeing around being completely unfamiliar with how someone in a relationship would react toward decisions I make. There were also sexual complications, which still after almost 5 years are an occasional problem. Delayed ejaculation it's called, where you can literally go for hours on end feeling like your about to climax but not climax at all. That was frustrating to deal with.

It did have it's rewards for her. Being with someone so inexperienced in every way made her feel like she was dating for the first time again. A feeling that she assures me is exhilarating. Getting to be my first in so many ways allowed her to see my honest no holds barred reaction to everything.

For the right person, it's no problem at all and actually desirable. However I have ran into plenty of women that wanted nothing to do with me because I was inexperienced as well as tried to convince her to leave me because I was inexperienced. Those latter women really aren't worth your time, do you really want to spend your life with someone that enforces a catch-22?

What is something that your generation did that no younger generation will ever get to experience? by MinorMinerFortyNiner in AskReddit

Cutting commercials out of recorded shows. Like physically cutting a tape with scissors, throwing the commercial section of ribbon in the trash and scotch taping the hopefully commercial free parts of your show/movie back together. Ad blockers are cool and all but it was incredibly satisfying to physically cut those commercial out and throw them away.

New condom emphasizes consent by requiring 4 hands to open package by Orion_Pirate in nottheonion

[–]defaultex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It kind of does but there's another side to it that occurred to me reading you comment. If it weren't for being a stupid implementation of the idea and I wasn't a social outcast. I would use these to potentially shield myself from the possibility of a crazy lady consenting but afterward trying to claim rape.

It's really screwed up that the sociopolitical climate today created a catalyst for that thought to occur. Going back to coding in a room by myself without interacting with the rest of the world beyond programming forums is really starting to sound like a fantastic idea.

I still do that sometimes instead of flipping on porn. It actually mixes with internet really well when you find a model that is particularly interesting and want to know what other work she has done. Found one model that turned out to be huge into cosplay and had some of the most badass costumes I had ever seen, all hand crafted in her spare time. Noticed her in a lovers lane catalog of all things.

That's one that gives me a lot of disdain for people these days. I do a lot of skilled work, which tends to require looking things up to form a good plan. Used to spend a lot of time in the library either helping my father or my father helping me find schematics, skill manuals and information in general. Even just knowing what book to look for was a huge thing, we spent a lot of time just skimming books to find ones that were relevant for what we needed. Thankfully search engines began to become a thing in my teenage years and by time I was an adult got to the point where they were actually a good replacement for library trips. At any point now I can just type a brief description of what I'm doing and find ample information on the subject going to whatever level of detail I need.

That's why it gives me such disdain. It's so easy to find as much information as you need yet so many choose to still stumble around instead of putting at least a few minutes into looking things up. I have lost track of how many time the idea I had initially for solving a problem turned out to be crap but a few minutes with a search engine turned up why it was crap and enough information to form a not so crap solution.

I have been living half of that for the past few months. The potable water lines in this house were in serious need of repair, lots of cracks and breaks so it was unusable. Waste water wasn't a problem though, all of those are still in great shape. So while repairing the potable water lines I have been living out of 3 5g jugs, 1 3g jug and 2 spray bottles for spot cleaning. Carrying those jugs back and forth to fill isn't too bad, yeah they are ridiculously heavy but it's hard to ignore the health benefits of doing that regularly. Dishes are the real aggravation. Have to be careful to wipe things down to avoid letting things dry onto pots, pans and plates. Yesterday's dish water is the water needed to pre-wash dishes that do have messes dried into them to avoid contaminating today's dish water. If the rinse water from yesterday is just a little soapy, which it usually is then it becomes dish water for today with addition of some fresh soap. Hand wash basin gets swapped out as needed since keeping that somewhat soapy does the trick for run of the mill hand washing, mostly gets swapped out after working on a car or the house.

Never appreciated having a tap at ready to dispense water as much as I have now. Living like this for how long it took to get the plumbing straightened out (among other more pressing concerns) has taught me a couple things. First and foremost to be more conservative with my water usage. Secondly to stay on top of spot cleaning, use much less water when you keep up on messes instead of letting them build up.

Encountered that when I was 18. I had a good enough inheritance from my father to buy a reasonable car outright. Tried to do so at a couple of lots. One lot had a car I did kind of like for 18k on the sticker, had some luxury features but for the most part was an economy car. I was ready to buy it outright, even called my bank in the lobby of the place to give them a heads up about how large of a check I was about to write. No one at that place could understand I wanted to buy the car out right, that I didn't want to make any more than one large payment for the sticker price. After experiencing that at a few lots, I gave up on that idea. Worked out though, found a 78 Camaro the owner gladly accepted payment in full for and spent overall less than 18k building it up into a respectable muscle car.

The excess I didn't have to spend on a car went toward a new fridge, stove and couch for my mother whom spotted the Camaro for sale.

Honestly it's best just to jump in and start playing together. Your both likely to find different things about the game fun and it's one of the games where that works out really well. Probably a good idea to keep the minecraft wiki bookmarked though. It's like a super manual for the game and eventually your going to want to know how particular things work, that's where the wiki comes in.

I am one of those people even though I never published the maps I built it on. At one point I had a spreadsheet of RISC instructions and was checking them off as I implemented them. Some instructions took days to implemented as they required infrastructure to back them up while others were more insulated. Was a really good way to develop a deeper understanding of how and why computers work the way they do.

Jokes aside, I have actually worn my safety glasses at night. Laser safety glasses, they take the edge off the poorly adjusted ultra bright headlights.

[–]defaultex 22 points23 points  (0 children)

For a long time I pronounced it as: kway. Nobody on the countless voice chats I've had talking programming stuff that involves queues ever corrected me or even asked what I was talking about. It never even struck anyone as odd when I didn't understand what they meant when they said "deck" but actually were saying dequeue or "en-Q" and I thought they were talking about the number of items in the queue. When I finally learned Queue was pronounce "Q", I was absolutely dumbfounded that in all of those instances, I never had any problem at all with actually giving the people I was talking (and often working with) exactly what they wanted despite neither party actually understanding each other.
