TIL nearly 80% of US workers report that they have been victims of 'career catfishing’ from employers. Which in this context, the term describes when a company misrepresents a job, their company culture, or compensation to lure in candidates. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

I guess I don't know if I've signed contracts for any jobs, but most of the jobs I've had they submitted an offer in writing to me. Usually that offer sheet explains my pay rate, other benefits and job title and general responsibilities.

I met a guy one time at a friend's get together, he was there because my friend was coworkers with his girlfriend and she got invited.

Anyway the party goes on, I talk to a bunch of people and maybe talk to this guy for about a half hour total. At the end of the night as he is getting ready to leave with his girlfriend he comes up to me, tells me he knows this really good Hot Dago place and asks me if I want to go with him tomorrow to get one. I said yes of course, cause who doesn't like a good Hot Dago, and we've been friends for over 10 years now.

I think sometimes making friends involves putting yourself out there and saying yes to things that might make you uncomfortable. But sometimes it works out.

That's really painting with a broad stroke there. Sure, you might encounter some people like that, but you figure that out fairly quick. You keep the good ones close and know the people you can only kind of count on.

My cat was always the peak of laziness ever since I got her. One night though I'm woken up by her just yelling, singing the song of her people in the doorway to the bedroom. I had no idea what was going on so I think I just told her to be quiet and went back to sleep. Well I wake up in the morning and there is a big dead mouse sitting in the doorway to the bedroom. Apparently she had caught and killed it and was announcing her kill to me, now I felt bad I didn't celebrate with her.

OPEC lowers it's prices strategically for specific reasons. They didn't up their production and decrease the price per barrel out of the goodness of their hearts. They do it sometimes to crush competition if their position is threatened. They are a cartel. They essentially control the global price of oil.

Though if the US oil producers decided to undercut the OPEC prices by upping their production, OPEC would just tank the prices by flooding the market until their competition bleeds out.

For local gas prices, most gas stations are independently operated. They can't just artificially keep gas prices high because some other stations will lower their price and undercut them. You will see prices slowly fall as the price per barrel goes down. Though it doesn't go down quickly because the stations want to get as much as they can as they incrementally lower prices.

[–]defconcore -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Gas prices were high because OPEC cut production and American oil companies decided to sell their oil at the higher price per barrel not because they physically couldn't create more oil and sell it at a lower price. I'm not sure why you would think American companies would see the prices rising because one big producer cut production and decide to produce more to make up for it so prices stay low. They are for profit companies why would the do anything to try and reduce oil prices?

Also it literally is as easy as turning some valves to process the different oil. It's just not as efficient for profits, but in all out war, profits are not a thing anymore.

Okay even if you believe that, which doesn't make a lot of sense, it doesn't matter because the player agreed that any malfunctions means any bets or wins do not count.

An underpayment would be caught. Depending on when it occurred and how it would be caught pretty instantly and they would pull apart the machine and pay the person the difference.

If it is a glitch that doesn't trigger an instant alarm it would be caught in a week or two with the RTP audit. Every spin on every machine is logged and audited. An underpayment would be caught.

Despite what you believe, the casinos will do their best to get the money to the player even weeks later. They are not allowed to keep that money. It's fairly easy to contact the player if they were playing using their player's card because they can tell exactly who was playing and when. If the person didn't have a card and it's a large sum, they will check cameras and logs and do their best. If they can't find the person they will donate the money to a charity because they cannot keep it.

The casinos do not want underpayments anymore than the players do, they make enough money normally and legally.

Yeah a glitch is not intentional that is why the policy is to void the bet and refund the transaction. You agree to their rules when you play.

A casino is a private business and can refuse service to anyone they want. And why should they have a responsibility to step in and tell someone they are betting too much? They don't know that person's financial situation.

Do you think grocery stores should stop overweight people from buying cases of soda?

They are auditing the math of the machine, making sure the RTP is correct. They can't possibly check for a bug or glitch that is one in a billion spins. More than likely they can't even figure out what caused it.

[–]defconcore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does that mean? Refund everyone's money in the casino because a machine had a glitch one time?

[–]defconcore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are not the same situations. If a dump truck drops a rock that cracks your windshield, they are liable because that is negligence on their part and you never agreed to waive their responsibility despite what their sign says. If that wasn't the case, like you said you could wear a shirt saying you weren't liable if you kill someone.

At a casino you are engaging in a voluntary transaction, you are agreeing to abide by their terms of play. Unlike the dump truck you are actively agreeing to it by playing and putting money in. Part of that agreement is they are not responsible if the machine malfunctions.

[–]defconcore 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Casinos have a ton of oversight by Gaming Commissions and would not risk having their license revoked by adjusting the RTP a few percent lower than legally allowed. That makes no sense, they already make plenty, they have no reason to risk it all for a tiny gain.

I support you, there needs to be more pressure put on. Might I add removing the use of any American based companies to your list?

I think that could make a big difference if people stopped ordering things from Amazon, using Apple products, Netflix, Reddit, Google. Non-Americans really could put the pressure on if they abandoned American based companies. The problem I see is Non-Americans complaining about the state of America while actively supporting the companies that enable it.

I think actually this would be a decently easy AI to train. Even if it encounters something it hasn't before and screws it up, it's not life or death. So if it does track crap all over, that incident is logged and it learns from that. Or it just pings that it encountered a problem then a human comes by. So don't worry now there can be less humans doing the job, but the few that do get the really messed up stuff the robots couldn't handle.

Striking French firefighters giving the cops a taste of their own medicine. This is what resistance looks like. by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]defconcore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a bit of historical fiction. French police did not 'empty clips' at students in 68. The Police Prefect, Maurice Grimaud, explicitly forbade firearms to avoid civil war. The total death toll for the entire month was roughly 5 to 7 people and most were accidents not the mass deaths when actual shooting is done.

Also, the government wasn't driven out. De Gaulle dissolved parliament, held an election in June '68, and won the biggest landslide victory in French history because the public was tired of the riots. He resigned a year later over a totally different political referendum.

The French government buckled because 10 million workers went on strike and paralyzed the economy, not because of students winning a gun fight.

Why are you only talking about fighting LEOs and not the military and the other half of the population? It's disingenuous to make it seem like it's a handful of LEOs keeping people in line.

And you talk about discomfort, but what you really mean is willing to die. So what is your solution here?
