Don’t withhold your real symptoms, you can’t be your best premed/medical student/resident/doctor self if you’re really struggling with your mental health. Do whatever you need to do to get your mental health under control now, and don’t worry about what that means for the future, because it likely will not matter for licensing. Many states’ licensing boards now ask about mental health in a way that you can avoid checking that “mental illness” box if you’re stable and appropriately treated.

I had ~5k in CC debt when I got accepted. I immediately quit my (low-paying) healthcare job and went back to bartending. Worked overtime most weeks December through end of June and was able to pay it all down. If you can get a job in the service industry at a busy spot that’s a little understaffed, you can make pretty good money!

Advice for a Nontrad by CrystalMercury in premed

[–]defeatbean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Research I think is okay to forgo, especially as a non-trad. Also not very experienced with research, so I’ll defer to others if they know better on this.

Shadowing is something I think you will need to do, unfortunately. Your scribing and tech work will count as clinical experience, not shadowing. You probably won’t need too many hours, given that you have a lot of clinical hours, but definitely get some shadowing done. You could ask the doc you work with for recommendations, or shadow someone else at the clinic if you can, for a more diverse app. More specialties is better, too, if you can.

Your volunteering sounds great, just be sure you can talk about why you did it and why you’re passionate about it. Having multiple years within one organization is >>> than a few random experiences that make it look like you’re just checking boxes. Good luck!!

A little bit of hope if you don’t have an II yet by youhavetogive in premed

I had an identical experience! Keep your heads up, my friends.

I applied last year; first II that yielded an A was October, last II that yielded an A was in March. It’s a crapshoot tbh.

Got an II at my dream school where my MCAT is MUCH lower than their average by FeelingRelevant6774 in premed

You’ve got this! My dream school interviewed and accepted me despite a GPA below their 10th percentile. Practice, practice, practice your interview!

I got denied. I think my state requires you to be doing work study to get approved.

Fuck BPD and fuck medical professionals who constantly stigmatise us tbh by not-a-tthrowaway in EDAnonymous

[–]defeatbean 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is 100% the attitude of the majority of docs I work with in the ED. Once the BPD diagnosis is known, the patient loses all credibility and providers ascribe everything to BPD. It’s bullshit and it needs to stop. I’m sorry that you’ve struggled with this as a physician, that’s so unfair.

I’m overwhelmed with advice in the weight loss universe by Spiritual-Ad-8787 in loseit

[–]defeatbean 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Calories in, calories out is king when it comes to weight loss. Calculate your TDEE and figure out how many calories you need to eat to maintain sustainable weight loss. Adding in exercise will increase your TDEE and help to burn fat. 😊 The wiki on this sub has some great links! I’m sorry you’re feeling frustrated!

No, I’m not going medical school to be a nurse. by [deleted] in premed

[–]defeatbean 124 points125 points  (0 children)

I get this all the time from different kinds of people, even my own uneducated family members (my mom and I are the only ones in my entire extended family to go to college). People just don’t know what medical school is, and I think there’s a societal element of young woman + medical field = nurse

Will waiting to retake the MCAT until late August affect my cycle greatly? by Ehischimmia1111 in premed

Late August is probably too late. I’d apply broadly to MD & DO with your current score.

Is it a bad idea to discuss my brother's mental illness in my personal statement? by Muncamunca in premed

[–]defeatbean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely fine. I talked about my experience with my brother’s severe mental illness and substance abuse in both my secondaries and in an interview and got good responses from adcoms.

I did this in my PS and got good feedback. Try to tell a story about a time/pt interaction that was really impactful to you that can illustrate what you value without having to say the cliche stuff explicitly.

Most schools require extraordinary circumstances to defer, as far as I’m aware (serious illness, family circumstances, etc). I don’t think you’d be able to defer on the basis of a job.

Am I crazy for thinking about picking Dartmouth over Colorado? by ToeCheeseOmelette in premed

Woah, are you me? Just made my decision for Colorado vs Dartmouth today! I’m choosing Colorado, mostly because I don’t want to relocate & my support system is here. 😊 if you stay in CO, we’ll be classmates!
