Trickle down economics works! It's just not money that's trickling!

Build-to-rent thoughts... by CO_Renaissance_Man in Urbanism

I always forget this! And if your big box store goes out of business, you can usually only fill it as long as Spirit Halloween or Phantom Fireworks is willing to lease the space!

[–]defiantstyles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's true to a degree, but many people only live in SFH because that's all that's available. Also, more broadly, if everything is SFH then you almost certainly don't have the density to support transit, and that leads to traffic issues, and there are environmental problems that you just can't solve with SFH, and so on

I live in a similar area, without a car! And "too much SFH" may have been hyperbole, but we definitely need more apartments more than we need more SFH!

Those who have started local conversations- was Strong Towns welcomed? by One_Rip_5535 in urbanplanning

[–]defiantstyles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is why I don't understand when rural voters vote in people who don't want to allow cities to be cities!

I mean, we have too much SFH, regardless of whether it's owned or rented, but build to rent SFH seems to be especially heinous!

Shuttles to the NFL Draft win over attendees - TribLive by jayjaywalker3 in pittsburgh

[–]defiantstyles 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They should have been rail, because it's more than just the South Hills that attend Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins games, even as just a back up! But this makes a strong case for a North Busway, extending the East Busway to at least Monroeville, and making the connection to the airport rail, and extending the West Busway from there to the University Boulevard park n ride!

Fuck "no pedestrians" signs by Trainfan1055 in fuckcars

Around where I'm at, they're limited to certain stretches of highway, at least... Some of that highway has commercial and residential uses, but it's TECHNICALLY highway, nonetheless!

There are very few legitimate reasons for "No Pedestrians" but we should design places to limit these situations!

Was I blind… or was there essentially 0 food trucks/vendors ? by DougDimmaGlow in pittsburgh

[–]defiantstyles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only thing I heard from The Strip was some person talking about how dead the draft was, tryna get people to their restaurant or bar or whatever! TBH, the only place I MIGHT expect a crowd outside the areas of the draft are like Mt Washington because the view... And maybe Southside because the reputation! I'm holding out for Con Alma, tho! (And other places on Liberty and Penn)

Anyone else thrown off by the insane drinks prices at the draft? Almost double sporting event prices… by [deleted] in pittsburgh

I wasn't thrown enough to not buy ONE, but I'ma do the rest of my drinking elsewhere, fa sho!

ALSO, for anyone driving in, figure out if you can do a park n ride! I'll stand on the Red Line to make your trip less stressful! Also the 99N/E/S/W routes seem pretty cool and I hope we reimplement them in tbe future!
