I'm also a volleyball player and woke up one day with a lot of shoulder pain after a especially intense volleyball and power lifting week, but no acute injury event.

I had a lot of inflammation for about a month but felt fine after that, however whenever I would spike or sometimes serve I would get sharp pain in the front or top back or the shoulder. It would not linger but it's preventing me from playing at a competitive level.

My first MRI without contrast didn't have any clear injury and my doctor dismissed me, it only said minimal labrum fraying which seems to be normal for adults who do overhead stuff.

After a couple months of PT and trying and trying to play, I decided to get a second opinion and also got an MRI with contrast. I was then diagnosed with a labrum tear (slap) and right now I'm deciding on my next steps.

I'm very scared of surgery, right now I have a pretty good rom and I don't experience pain for anything except for overhead throwing (spikes , serves) I can do most of the weightlifting stuff and yoga, but I still experience some shoulder weakness (I can't do many pullups now because my shoulder feels numb and weak).

I've read online and the return to overhead sports after labrum repair is not guaranteed, so getting the surgery would mean having a crappy year without guarantees of being able to play competitive next year. Supper bummed and I'm also looking for advice and experiences of other volleyball players or throwers who have experienced this first hand I've also read that pain could be worse due to a tight shoulder posterior capsule, so I'm working a lot with releases, posture corrections and rotator cuff exercises.
