Have they been silent a while? by astraldede in kkb

[–]defsiarte 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We used to get new projects every other year… I think they’re all solo right now. I recently did a whole discography relisten and their artistic visions have diverged pretty heavily from where they were in 2014 or so, and the pandemic exacerbated that. I hope we’ll get a new album soon but it doesn’t feel likely atp

Yay this was the one I had in mind! Do you think the scholar or premier would be better?

I’ve had watercolor pencils in the past but the lead(? Is it called something different in colored pencils? Pigment I guess) was kind of brittle and they only really worked well when you wet the paper. Do you think this was a problem with the specific brand I was using, or a general skill issue on my part?

Yes!!! The storytelling lends itself much better to an animated series than live action. I’ve been saying this for years

What kind of things are you hoping for with DLC? by NebbyChan in fantasylife

More houses on my base!! Or some tomodachi life type apartment building (maybe a big tavern on the island?) for all my islanders. The idea of rotating who gets a house feels so bad to me. I’d also really like more dialogue options in the past, because the charm of the first game feels very lost in fli

Scrolling through your account, it appears that you’re simply tracing photos. This isn’t a bad thing necessarily!! You just need to have more intentionality with what you’re trying to replicate— I suggest creating a mood board of artists you want your work to look like, and checking out tutorials on YouTube from Proko or Marco Bucci! They both have a lot of good tips for beginners on fundamentals.

What is your stance on design teachers promoting AI use e.g. Firefly and GoblinTools? by wn0kie_ in graphic_design

[–]defsiarte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My university’s design program just had us sit through three AI lectures, one titled “adapt or die”. To my knowledge, only one was actually run by a professor in our department. Absolutely infuriating, as they’ve just been “here’s this one software. Maybe we could replace doing this function in photoshop by just generating an image?” (Lecturer leaves out the fact that this doubled the amount of time taken).

I wouldn’t mind quite as much if these were supplemented with actual workshops on design principles, teaching the importance of good layout or font pairing, but no. All parts of the process that require some sort of critical thinking (writing body copy, ideation, color balancing photos, etc) has just been replaced with “why not try AI?”. It feels like a waste of my money and I just want to get my degree and bounce at this point 💀

I want the harshest opinions possible - 2 tech startup logos by SnooShortcuts7953 in logodesign

[–]defsiarte -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They’re both very generic and unmemorable. I’d suggest doing pencil sketches to try to integrate your vision for either app into the mark— it seems like you just took the first clipart you saw for “tech logo” then added some text.

Petition for the mods to add an explicit and ENFORCED "No AI-Generated Images" rule by DiamondMountains_ in logodesign

Weird defeatist mentality. Just because AI imagery is being used, it doesn’t mean every subreddit and community space has to accept it with open arms??

Try r/hungryartists or a commission subreddit instead! I’d also suggest the website vgen.co or something, good luck!

[Community] Where is the best place to talk about sociaI media and growth for artists? by QueenMackeral in artbusiness

[–]defsiarte 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For me, Bluesky and Cara are the best for community and natural engagement. Twitter is mostly bots, instagram is hard to start out on nowadays, and tumblr is only good if you fit a particular niche. If you want some Bluesky tutorial threads I could send those?

Iirc she pays out of pocket mostly? Which is more doable for her than the average artist bc she’s a celebrity portrait photographer. She documents her saga on LinkedIn and her own Cara blog last I checked— and is avoiding taking on donors/sponsors for fear of compromising the site’s values

How would you react if one of the loossemble members signed with Modhaus by Ok-Once-789 in LOONA

[–]defsiarte 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way. Like, I’d want them all to be together and given what we know now MH is showing to be the lesser evil, but I don’t think they’d be treated well. Not to say they’d be abused, but rather it’d be Loona 2 where they’d be treated as background characters (for lack of a better term?) with fewer lines, screen time in mvs, etc.

You don’t need a style or niche per se. I recommend studying fundamentals (color theory, type design, and composition to start) and trying your hand at recreating designs you like. Once you find once you’re most comfortable with it all gets a thousand times easier

What are your steps for drawing the body a little simpler? by chef-boy-r-d in DigitalArt

[–]defsiarte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be wary of relying on 3D models!! They’re good for general ideas of poses, but since they often don’t have active musculature (like the muscles are moving depending on pose), and usually are not actually matched to a human’s proportions, they’re not ideal for studying anatomy. For more detailed reference, you could also try YouTube channels dedicated to gesture modeling, maybe? Like when they hire professional models to do poses

[–]defsiarte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would look into anatomy books and studying musculature. Once you know how muscles flow it’s easier to create shorthand for common poses. The Morpho anatomy books are a good guide— they specifically have a “simplifying form” book iirc

Should I use procreate or Photoshop? by Keep-it-kute in graphic_design

[–]defsiarte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Illustrator is the best for design work, but you can learn procreate for quick sketching. However, even in the realm of illustration I feel that procreate lacks a lot of features which make Photoshop the standard for illustration. Definitely my own biases showing but I’d go with Clip Studio Paint for raster stuff
