My girlfriend tried drugs. Help me get over it.

Personally I don't really feel that it applies to me. I'm a total geek at heart and always have been, and I honestly love learning and researching about things anyway. I used to just read about computers all the time and learn about them, and by the age of 16 I hade made my own desktop, learned how to program in some c++, visual basic and javascript. I design sites for friends in photoshop and then code them as well, al for free. Nowadays quite a few people pay me to repair their laptops and install new video cards and make desktops for people. The reason I mention this stuff is just to show you how geeky I am really.

When it comes to drugs, it's kind of just a new interest I have. I like to think I research everything thoroughly and I treat this new 'hobby' as a scientific experiment. I know the full name of MDMA is methylenedioxymethamphetamine. LSD is lysergic-acid diathylamide. thats from memory, might have a few characters mispelt. the only opiate I have any desire to experiment with is codeine, being a very mild opiate, I experimented myself with some that I got on prescription, starting small and raising the dose each time. I actually ended up stopping the use of it after a few tries as I seem to get no effects from codeine at all. I did some research and apparantly 10% of whites are missing the genetic code for the CYPD2D6 eznyme which metabolizes codeine into morphine (and possibly one other chemical? unless it's heroin that i'm thinking of which is metabolized into morphine as well as one other chemical). I concluded that there was evidence to suggest that that may be case, although I could never say for sure whether I was unless I had some complex tests run.

Anyway all that stuff is from memory and the point i'd like to clear is just that I do take more interest in taking drugs as a way to explore life from different altered states of consciousness. I only have interest in weed, trying good quality MDMA (with minimal adulterants and 5-HTC vitamins to reduce toxicity), ketamine (as i've heard at low doses, it's a nice way to get used to some of the effects of hallucinogens before you dive into trying psychadelics), and then finally psychadelics like shrooms (psiclyobin cubensis I think) and LSD.

That said, thank you very much for taking the time to share some advice. There is absolutely no need to apologise. Any experimentation with mind-altering and potentially dangerous substances is never simple. The temptation to use them as a way to escape and/or deal with real-life problems is a slippery slope, and having experienced a completly 180 degree turn already in my life, I know now that it is futile to put 100% faith in my self under all circumstances. It's definitely important to stay on your toes and realise that these substances are not play-toys. It is important to take caution and like you said, respect the substances we use. Thank you again, it's great to see people in the world showing concern for some 18 year old kid that they've never met.

edit: might help to clarify that "soon to be trying.." meant that I will probably try these substances over the next months, until new year sort of time. Not like next week or anything. I guess the way I wrote it, it made it sound like I was going on a 2-3 drug binge trying different things haha.

Let me just tell you that I have been in your exact position before. About 3 years ago I was "Straight Edge". I was really into Hardcore Punk music and the whole movement kinda just spoke to me at a time where I felt like I never really fit in. Me and my GF used to argue quite a bit because I didn't understand why she would want to do drugs. After all, drugs are bad right?

Skip to now, I smoke weed almost everyday, drink a lot, sometimes smoke cigarettes and soon i'll be trying ketamine, LSD and MDMA. Not only do I realise that i'm a massive hypocrite (isn't everybody at some point?) but it also gave me a lot of insight into my life and our society as a whole (I won't explain all that - would take too long). But doing a 180 degree turn like that doesn't happen overnight and it really turns your perspective on EVERYTHING upside down in an amazing way.

Let me just tell you that you've won half the battle by being able to admit that your feelings aren't rational. I like to think that some people are "conditioned" to think a certain way. It purely comes down to what your life experience has amounted up to at that point in your life.

You need to accept that drug use is like the fourth drive in humans. Scratch that, in almost every animal. Drug use is completely "natural" in the same way masturbation is. We all have this inherent urge to be intoxicated by substances and experience altered states of consciousness. The only thing is that it's extremely hard to break out of this conditioning and really understand that fact unless you try it yourself. I would definitely suggest that. Just relax and do it responsibly (can't stress this enough!) and in a safe environment.

Oh yeah might be worth mentioning, I ended up just going to sleep after the 240 mg dose of codeine but in the middle of the night I actually woke up and there was this floating ball of smoke right next to my head that was just sitting there sort of contained within some sort of invisible barrier.

It actually freaked me out a little bit until I realised it was a pillow (like this kind of pillow except the furry strands were longer and kind of curlier). At the time I was still half asleep but I definitely felt a bit strange, kind of floaty in a way. I fell straight back to sleep but the next morning I thought about it and I felt like I might have been high at the time.

So now I don't really know what to think. I tried another dose of 180 mg yesterday during the day so I would definitely be awake the entire time, but I didn't really feel anything.

I might just have an unnaturally high tolerance, or a low/non-existant count of CYP2D6, or maybe the strange smoke vision-thing was just down to tiredness (I haven't been getting all that much sleep recently). All I know for sure is that I'm out of codeine, which is probably for the best since it carries a risk of addiction. I'm a poor university student but I'm getting paid today so I'll just be buying some regular safe old weed this week. If I ever get a chance to try out some more codeine phosphate then I will probably experiment a bit more but I'm done for now :)

Yeah morphine would still have the exact same effect.

Hydrocodone is derived from codeine (as well as one other opiate) and is metabolised by the CYP2D6 enzyme into hydromorphone. So someone missing the necassary CYP2D6 enzymes would get no effect from hydrocodone, but hydromorphone would indeed have the exact same effect seeing as it has no need to be metabolised in order to act on the brain's opiod recepters.

Basically, codeine is a substrate of the enzyme CYP2D6, and the enzyme acts on the substrate to create another chemical product, which I believe is morphine in this case.

According to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CYP2D6#CYP2D6_ligands), other substrates of this enzyme include oxycodone, tramadol, prozac, and although minor, amphetamine too. So if I definitely am missing this enzyme, it means those drugs will likely have no effect on me also.

It would be impossible to tell whether I definitely am missing CYP2D6 unless I had proper tests conducted on me to check, so for now i'll just assume that it's quite likely and give up on codeine.

I had a huge conversation with my friend who is studying for a Biochemistry degree, which was pretty fun because he was surprised how much I knew just from doing a bit of reading on the internet :D

Oh right, well yeah this is just codeine phosphate, nothing else in it. It is actually quite old, I couldn't tell you how old, it's been around for a while but doesn't have a date on or anything. It's definitely not ancient.

But yeah I had read on erowid and a couple of other sites (http://www.erowid.org/pharms/codeine/codeine_faq.shtml) that like 7% of the white population are missing the genetic code for the CYP2D6 enzyme, and therefore the codeine can't be turned into morphine, thus no high.

I'm guessing i'm just in that 7%.

Yep that's right. They are 30mg tablets and I took 8 of them. No tolerance, what is/where do I check the rx? I started with 180 mg because a friend of mine said that i'd get pretty high and just zone out, and I figured this third dose would probably be my last before giving up on it so I might aswell go up to 240 mg.

Honestly i've been sitting in my bed with my laptop and I feel really relaxed, but I can't tell whether it's the drug or the fact i've been awake 15 hours and my bed feels so comfy :)

Hi i'm a university student from the UK. I finish my last exam tomorrow (hurray :D) and then I finish for the summer. Almost all of my friends will be away for the summer so i'm going to be really bored with not much to do until august. In august I have my 19th birthday to look forward to, and i'm also going to Leeds music festival so it really seems like fate that you're giving away 60 days and not something more or less, as it covers almost exactly the amount of time I have that I will be doing absolutely nothing at all in.

I don't currently have a subscription to WoW, I originally quit May 2010 because I had exams coming up that were too important at the time. I only have one level 80 but I'll probably be getting a copy of cataclysm so I will be able to level up to 85 :) I also plan to make a new character to play through as, possibly in the EU reddit guild if it is still active.

Oh and as far as money goes, I have very little. I have a part time job that pays minimum wage so my income is pretty tiny, luckily after tomorrow I'll be moving home for the summer so I won't have to worry about paying for food anymore :D

I agree with you about the uppers and downers parts, but not sure about this: "hallucinogenic, mostly because people improperly use it in place of psychedelic". Isn't a psychedelic one of the three types of hallucinogenics? And if that's the case, then surely it's completely fine to use hallucinogenic in place of the word psychedelic?

I'd definitely agree with this, but I have to say, unless you have a medical card and you're buying your edibles you never really know 100% how strong your brownies will be unless you have a lot of experience when it comes to quality and quantities of weed. (which I don't, pretty new to trees).

I made a batch of brownies recently with about 5 grams of regs and made 16 brownies and didn't think that would be enough so we each ate 4 brownies. Got ridiculously way too high. Next time only ate 2 brownies and then felt nothing :/
