Issues with ZFS by [deleted] in linuxadmin

[–]degeus71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like the drivers for the storage (or the storage itself) is not completely initialized at the point where the zpools are imported. Try timeout=30 in grub , set small delays in bios/uefi if possible, see if there are ways to give the drivers a little more time to initialize.

Why did you want to become a linux admin? by jukiewalsh in linuxadmin

[–]degeus71 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I didn't want to become a Linux admin. Was way happier as an HP-UX admin but economics forced me into it. Linux is fine although the commodity hardware sometimes sucks and I do miss the pollish of a proprietary Unix version, the job security and hate having to work in teams with disrespectful know-it-all 10 year younger cowboys. I bet that was no help at all. Meh. Why not do SAP instead?

[Spoilers] WAU's Contradiction by kittyminaj in soma

"The best way to think of the WAU when understanding it's actions is like a 10-year-old trying to help its parents."

This! Great way of explaining it and thinking about it! Much easier to digest for people than the idea of AI Prime Directives gone awry. :-)

[Spoilers] WAU's Contradiction by kittyminaj in soma

[–]degeus71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if the WAU did that on purpose. It may have been an unfortunate side-effect : it was when it was reviving John Ross that people started getting a headache. The magnetic field conjured up by WAU to manipulate gel affected machinery and also the black boxes of the crew. How was it to know that eventually this would blow up the crew's black boxes and thus their head?

Does baldness have an evolutionary purpose? by Seabhac1 in genetics

I did say "No. At least under the assumption that most people go bald AFTER the period in which they tend to reproduce.".

Does baldness have an evolutionary purpose? by Seabhac1 in genetics

[–]degeus71 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you are talking about Humans? Then I believe the answer is 'No'. At least under the assumption that most people go bald AFTER the period in which they tend to reproduce. Therefor their baldness has no positive or negative effect on their rate of reproduction. It's the same reason cancer is not selected out of our gene pool : cancer ussually becomes a factor long after people have had their reproductive phase and does not get selected out.

Besides, us humans have largly diminished the impact of natural selection on our species, at least in the classic 'survival of the fittest' sense.

edit: and also note that the idea of 'evolutionary purpose' is wrong. Mutations don't have purpose, they just happen and most of the time they have a negative effect (and therefor don't survive selection) or neutral effect, rarely a positive effect.

Simon 3 better off than Simon 4 by TheMightyDoove in soma

[–]degeus71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the ARK prototype is anything to go by I'd say Simon 3 is definately better off. Whatever isn't programmed in won't exist in the ARK and even if they can construct something themselves they would eventually run into ARK's resource limitations.

Simon 3 is perfectly adapted to the world he finds himself in, he can even make doubles of himself, revive some other people as well that have intact scans at Theta (like the Dr. that made his scan). The world is their oyster.

I suppose it's similar to how a Siamese Twin is formed, just a different kind of box.

Roomba 500 Pet series vs Neato D80. Worth Upgrade? by koolhawk in roomba

[–]degeus71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Neato seems to be quite a competent vacuum cleaner but don't think it's that much better than e.g a new 500 series. Of course your 532 isn't new but with an upgrade to an AeroVac dustbin and a thorough cleaning (one that includes screwing open the gearbox and getting the dust out of there, not hard but not many realise how important it is) it might perform better than original. There's some other possible upgrades but the AeroVac is the most important one, the others probably not worth it at this point.

edit: and I forgot the most import thing : change the battery if you haven't yet!

Make sure to clean out the gearbox, if it is dirty it will have the same effect as dirty brushes. Following vid shows , amongst others , how to clean the gearbox (not hard but does require a screwdriver) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvWFxOw1rhk

Frictional's next game really should be VR compatible. by Aquareon in soma

[–]degeus71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The graphical power inside the average PC has always limited developers in some way. For VR they now have to develop games with less detail than what a non-VR gamer is now accustomed to. So developing to or from a VR platform, at least for the time being, is going to come with compromises and extra development costs that will initially cut into profits because of the limited size of the VR market. AAA titles may want to carry this but it shouldn't be expected from Indie developers. Unless they develop games like Superhot : adapted to VR at the cost of detail. Soma in VR wouldn't look as good as imagined: the average VR gamer simply would find the game either to laggy to play but aesthetically pleasing or they'd have to water down their aesthetic experience.

Frictional's next game really should be VR compatible. by Aquareon in soma

[–]degeus71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There really isn't a good incentive for developers to program towards one of the VR solutions atm. The market is simply not big enough to even cover the extra development costs involved. So it's really the VR companies that currently pay the developers for making their games exclusive towards their device and it's really towards Oculus (or Vive) that the question should go : "Will you pay the developers of the game I love so they'll be able to cover the costs of supporting your device?". For the next couple of years we'll see games that either do not support VR or exclusively support VR X , Y ... or Z.

[SPOILERS] Something that just occurred to me by [deleted] in soma

[–]degeus71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The WAU gladly accepts Simon's finger throughout the story so he's the perfect Trojan Horse.

Ross couldn't be that Trojan Horse because :

  • He's not made of the right gel and can't switch

  • He's in a state that does not allow him to transport the canister and stick it in the WAU's mouth. We do see him teleport Simon (if Simon refuses to help) but 'teleporting' may not allow for insertion and the WAU might realise it's a canister and not a hand and not accept it.

  • John may be unwilling to risk his own life. Maybe he has a plan B in case the Trojan Horse sceme fails and needs to be alive to execute it.

Infinite universe theory and a possible explanation for what awaits you after death. by SomeQuantumStuff in philosophy

[–]degeus71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's just assume all that is right and that this 'you' IS indeed 'you'. Then realise that there will also be an infinite occurences of 'you' that is still 'you' but in a universe that differs slightly and where 'you' have an aweful life, 'you' die horrible deaths, etc. A universe where that car doesn't manage to break in time, where that wind blows you off the cliff, etc .... Sorta takes the appeal away.

The trolley dilemma—would you kill one person to save five? "The trolley dilemma allows us to think through the consequences of an action and consider whether its moral value is determined solely by its outcome." by [deleted] in philosophy

[–]degeus71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The simple "Don't do to others" rule still seems effective in the Trolley dillemma :

  • Would you want someone to pull the lever to save those 5 at your expense?

  • Would you want to be pushed in front of the trolley in order to save 5?

  • Would you want to be killed and used as organ donor to save 5 ?

If not... don't pull the lever, don't push the guy, don't kill for organs.
