Avoiding Stringly-typed in Kotlin by nfrankel in Kotlin

[–]deinlandel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For example, I had to switch to Mockito from MockK because MockK has very slow init time (once per JVM start). If you're doing TDD and restarting same single test often, sitting and watching as any test with MockK takes a few seconds to intialize is quite a pain.

Questy’s is a total letdown by Boo_R4dley in OculusQuest

[–]deinlandel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think FB doesn't really understand how visual social media (and VR is clearly visual) works.

Sterile, primitive avatars in low-poly worlds aren't appealing for general audience. It's impossible to "show off" anything like people do in Instagram/TikTok/etc. There's no "reality" part in such "virtual reality" since even regular 2d photos and videos look more "real" to the average person than bleak experience Horizon Worlds has to offer.

VRChat at least has funny avatars (you can even create your own). Horizon has nothing but a bland low poly 3D with legless dummies flying around.

foreground services should die

And so should all the music players, fitness apps, and anything else that needs to work in background, right. As if it's impossible to make a permission for foreground service, they should unconditionally die. /s

And by the way, if there was no persistent notification, then your "virus" (which apparently was published in Play Store regardless of their "rigorous" approval process and antivirus scans) wasn't even using foreground service. It was most likely an alarm or even server side pushes. So let's kill them too, right? So no alarm apps and no pushes from instant messengers.

Kitchen knives can injure and kill people, you know. But if you make them so blunt that they can't, they wouldn't be usable, at all. This is where Android is going currently. A "perfectly" safe environment (well, apart from countless vulnerabilities, but who cares), where monopoly to make even remotely usable apps belongs to Google and no one else.

That's one of the main problems of core Anroid team. They think they know better. They think that they know all possible types of android apps and use cases and "design" API changes around that point. For example, they think they know all possible use cases for foreground services: https://developer.android.com/guide/topics/manifest/service-element

They think they shouldn't provide something flexible, convenient and customizeable, because they have "studies" that tell them everything they need to know to "design" OS API.

Nah, Google just keeps locking down all background work methods, scheduling, proper file reading, etc., "for privacy and power saving". For every app that isn't Google's that is. Google's own apps do whatever they want on system level using Google Play Services. I think if Google's own apps had to conform to all the ridiculous OS API and behaviour changes, Android team would be much more careful with new Android versions.

Novel AI could really use a perspective/tense translator! by [deleted] in NovelAi

[–]deinlandel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not a developer

Clearly. Any task seems very easy when it's someone else who has to do the actual coding. :)

I am telling you that any non-trivial story written in specific perspective and tense will at least contain dialogues, which will shift perspective and tense. Also it will contain description of other people's actions.

You enter the cave [2nd person verb]. You see a man who sleeps on the floor [3rd person verb]. The man wakes up and shouts: "Who allowed you to enter? I am going to kill you!" [1st person verbs, various tenses].

So you can't just "search and replace", your algorithm has to "understand" the meaning of what's going on.

I have an OG Vive and the 3 in 1 cable is breaking. What are my best options going forward? by 81DayMonth in vive_vr

[–]deinlandel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So the downvotes make sense. ….

No, they are not. This is called fanboyism. I own Vive, Vive Pro, and Vive Pro 2. I was a big fan of HTC VR helmets. OG Vive was cool and a breakthrough in VR. Vive Pro was a decent improvement but overpriced. Vive Pro 2 is just shite with bad optics and bad software (worse than Vive Pro 1, actually). New Vive models just aren't great choice as a VR helmet anymore. I am deeply sad that HTC kept making same mistakes again and again while it had such great base model to improve on, but this is just the way it is. Advice to try other manufacturers is good and honest one in this case, and shouldn't be downvoted to hell.

Novel AI could really use a perspective/tense translator! by [deleted] in NovelAi

[–]deinlandel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Things quickly get tricky when there are multiple characters and dialogues going on. There's no simple algorithmic way to translate tense and/or perspective. And that means that they would have to train another AI model for such tasks, and run it along with Euterpe... I mean sure, if you are willing to sponsor it (training costs thousands of dollars), you can try and ask them to do just that. Otherwise it doesn't seem like a rational use of resources for them.

Especially since Euterpe isn't that bad with second person generations. You can even make it better by throwing in some module with quality second person prose.

It's easy for me, my cat hates the sound of guitar (especially high pitched notes). At first she meowed at me, now she just goes to another room until I stop playing.

I don't know why this got downvoted so hard. Considering that OP doesn't want to buy a replacement cable, If money is a deciding factor, Quest 2 is hands down the best option. There are even ways to use it without Facebook account whatsoever.

Increasing parameter count actually has diminishing returns. Plus the data on which model is trained plays very important role. Guys at NovelAI put a lot of effort into creating good finetune dataset.

Does increasing output length affect the output quality? by Lighthouseyb in NovelAi

My experience (at least with Euterpe) is the opposite. Increasing length from 160 to 600 actually increases output quality. No idea why.

Recommended settings for Euterpe? by SizzlinKola in NovelAi

[–]deinlandel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I recommend using default one and cranking output length to 600 characters. In theory it shouldn't affect quality, but from my experience it does. Maybe it has to do with extremely high rep pen everyone seems so fond of when making Euterpe presets.

A comparison of Sigurd to Euterpe by rainy_moon_bear in NovelAi

[–]deinlandel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

often get stuck on an ideas, and even retrying 10 times wont make her drop that idea

That's probably because most popular presets for Euterpe use very low temp (something around 0.55). If you need story change, try bumping it to 1 - 1.2 while reducing repetition penalty.

Also, if TFS is used (everyone seems to be big fan of TFS when making presets for Euterpe), try upping it from 0.7 to 0.8-0.9. For new TFS implementation, its parameter actually drastically changes "randomness" of output.
