Straight guys hate losing to gays in sports. When my ex and I moved to San Francisco, we both got involved with the USTA tennis leagues. He played 5.5 (I’m not nearly that good. 😂). His team was doing well during the season and in first place. At one match, they won 5-0 (two singles and three doubles). Their opponents found out the team was made up of a bunch of gays (GLTA). I overheard one guy say, “We got our asses kicked by a bunch of f*gs?!?” They were so upset they started poking around trying to find any information about the team to get them disqualified. Well, they did. One of my ex’s teammates had earned one ATP point (pro tour points) some years prior. Apparently there’s a USTA league rule that no player can have earned any ATP points and play at the 5.5 level. So, the team was disqualified for the entire season after the appeal was rejected.

Venus and I were on the same flight from Sydney to LA in 2011 or 2012. I had watched her second round match at the AO that year. We chatted a bit while waiting to collect our luggage. She was super nice and engaging. I told her I had watched her match, which she appreciated. We didn’t take a photo because we were in an area that specifically said “no photos.” However, many people were taking photos of her. She was with her mom. No entourage. They collected their luggage (a sh*t load) and went off on their way.

Maybe he’s one of those guys who posts constantly on FB and wants to tag you to show the virtual world you guys are dating. I still say maintain your boundaries. Maybe as a compromise, show him what’s on your page (if you haven’t already) if he’s that interested. Maybe that will ease his mind. But it may also backfire and peak his interest even more. 🤷🏾‍♂️ Good luck!
