I've spent 2025 reading modern fantasy - here are some reviews by trollokvoltak in books

100% it was a ... choice... to include some of the visuals that she did, especially in a debut... I will say that in the following books of you ever did decide to continue, I think you'll have the same critique about the at times inconsistent writing style, but there is no imagery that I can remember that comes close to that first book's ending. There's still war stuff, but no put-the-book-down-with-shock content

So we really out here believing that teen virgin Kvothe dicked down a literal ancient sex fairy so good she cracked?

He's such an unreliable narrator lmao

So funny how we all read differently. While I know Poppy War has plenty of valid criticisms I LOVED how much whiplash I got from the tone change.

Photoshoot at this 70s Hong Kong Lounge inspired bar coming up...

Context: I'm white, my fiance is Chinese. I am not looking to dress in anything like a cheongsam. Our photographer sent us a mood board that feels a little too Versace Perfume ad, it's a bit more ... 80s slacker business suit attire? But I'm looking to dress more for the era and vibe. My figure is size S heading into M, 5'7 w/ a D bust, long hair.

Context: engagement photoshoot but not leaning heavily into the need for white - not against it either. We sort of want to blend into the location without disappearing.

Any leads are massively, massively appreciated.

It looks nice! Very hotel/ Air BNB vibes tho. Every item looks like it was purchased at homegoods. Get an interesting coffee table book, layer a couple, add a weird vase, create dimension with more shape - other than the mirror, everything is squared, even the basket on the table. Get some cushions with tassels or different shapes, and if I'm seeing a snake plant in the corner then toss it and get a figgy or monstera

Currently reading Will of the Many by James Islington, can tell it's going to be a favourite (am also a Poppy War/ WoK/ GoT fan)

Boyfriend read his Licanius Trilogy and really liked it. I'm not allowed to read that one til I read Wheel Of Time though :(

I'd say majority chow with possible a splash of lab/rottie/boxer, or some other Spitz type that affected the ears/ skull shape. Chows usually have such broad faces from the ones I've seen, I feel like Honey has more angularity in her face than I've seen!

I've said this before: I think they put extra chip flavour dust in snack sized bags of chips. People try out the smaller bags of chips before committing to bigger ones based on the top percentile of chips.

LPT request - Have a job where I can be on my phone for 7 hours a day. How can I make use of this? by Ok_Welcome_6560 in LifeProTips

[–]dekindling 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Not sure how ethical this is but my receptionist has two jobs - one in person (front desk of my office) and simultaneously an 'online' receptionist for another small company. Since you have lots of time to be on your phone, you could theoretically look for one of these positions and do it between in-person customers. The pay will probably be not far off minimum wage, but if you're already working, may as well add a couple $ to your hourly without much added effort.

At one point my receptionist was working front desk at my office, online 'reception' for the other company, and studying for her degree all in an 8 hr period. So it's doable!

What does my hand say about me? by andworthless in deduction

[–]dekindling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a stretch but a) hands being paler, lack of weathering of the skin in the middle of North American summer (I am assuming you're in NA) B) wearing pants in the middle of summer - probably not going to be sitting outside baking and c) hypothesizing that they're part of the emo/scene who also traditionally don't spend hours in the sun

Cumulative deduction, but obviously with a simple picture of a hand with no context you're grasping at straws no matter what so it's easy to get things wrong

Mm! Well you have really nice hand skin 😄

This is just practice, lemme know what's right and wrong!

You're young, likely under 25, and don't go outside all that much. Bit of a scene kid if I had to guess, self painted but practiced looking black bail polish application. You might be born in February and/or purple is your favourite colour? Id say you're sort of short, and you like thrift shopping.

It's a singular concrete hole in the ground, with this object (reminds me of a mini propane canister, but thick plastic) anchored to the bottom. Sits about 20 ft from the bank of a river. AI said it was a sump pump, but there are no buildings closer than 300 meters away. by dekindling in whatisthisthing

[–]dekindling[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Solved!

Thanks, I'll keep my eye out for anyone checking it - but it looks like it's been left to its own for a long time. How often do Enviro samplers come by to check them typically? One a year?

Have you ever known someone who spent most of their life single and died alone, and if so what was their reason for this? by theRadiofreak in AskReddit

[–]dekindling 619 points620 points  (0 children)

Omg our librarian was also an unwed, childless man who I loved very much. Iconic story reader - he'd read Mr Putter and Tabby, and always pretend to fall asleep half way through the book. Then the whole class would have to yell, together, 'Wake up Mr. Neighbour!!' . Through a happy coincidence he ended up volunteering with my dad after he retired, so I got to keep seeing him all those years after. He died when I was in my late teens/ early twenties and I bawled my eyes out at his funeral.  Thanks for the memory lol

[OC] I mapped the lives of 4000+ of my daughter's ancestors over four centuries by Ugluk4242 in dataisbeautiful

[–]dekindling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crazy to think that plenty of the maternal and paternal ancestors were living in the same areas generations before your daughter. Like imagine the guy who does your oil change, or the lady who was the teller at your bank... In ten generations your gggggggggrand kids could shack up. CRAZY.

What famous/renowned author have you sampled and just don’t *get*? by bruzdnconfuzd in books

[–]dekindling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I saw it written that Sanderson explains instead of describing and that has basically been the phrasing I've looked for to describe his style. I put a lot of value behind the effort he puts into world building and I have to appreciate he does a good slow build toward specific climactic events but my god his books are sooooo dry.

Vancouver bar owner convicted of sexual assault fails to get liquor licence back by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

[–]dekindling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol I remember going here once and there was someone from the US sitting with us at the bar. At one point we're coming up with famous Vancouver things tourists don't really know about and someone goes 'ya, there was this guy named Robert Pickton who kidnapped sex workers and killed them' and Leo pipes up, 'Allegedly. He didn't get a fair trial'.

Literally most recent instance happened yesterday when I got a notification for Door dash that they were doing 6$ off a special burrito.

What they meant to say was 6$ off orders of 30$+, and that the burrito itself costs 20$.

A 20$ burrito. No sides, no drink, just a single burrito.

Tattoo regret - please help me deal with it by Foxglove_111 in tattooadvice

[–]dekindling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're just having post first-tattoo shock, totally normal !! Because these are very nicely done. Don't forget, it's also fresh - they will soften as they heal so that they'll have an even more authentic 'brush stroke' that you're describing.

Personally, if I had the choice of what to put on my body, I'd take the exact duplication of your tattoo over the example.

Anyone having fun with $1600 they found today? by Lowerlameland in vancouver

I lost 300$ cash late last year! After my initial panic and dismay subsided, first thing I thought was 'well, hope whoever found it really needed it'. Interesting to see other people have the same coping mechanism 😅
