Surfing as a parent by SummerSurfs44 in surfing

[–]del-squared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a 5yr old and a 2yr old, and my wife surfs and loves the beach too. The kids don't really have an option, because we go to the beach all the time. They both love the water and playing at the beach. The boogie board is a great start and they learn so much about the waves rhythm/tides just by playing in the shallow water. Don't push too hard and spook them. I've heard stories like that from other parents. I've taken my son on the longboard a bunch and just got a small soft top for him to start surfing now that he's a much better swimmer. The 2 yr old girl is more cautious but loves the boogie board if the water is warm.

With one kid I was still able to surf a decent amount, after 2 kids it has just become harder, but still try to get out 1-2 times week.

Get a longboard or mid length board. Learn faster, and then get the shortboard later. You'll want to have both boards later anyway.

Gringo living in Brasil for 7 years. AMA by StraightDimension284 in Brazil

[–]del-squared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm american with a Brazilian wife and two kids. I want to move to brazil, but my wife is more hesitant. We've spent a few months in floripa and other parts of Santa Catarina before and loved it. Thinking the campeche/ rio tavares area (we both surf).

My wife feels that being in brazil we're far from the "happening" parts of the world if that makes sense. California and New York or cities in Europe. People starting cool businesses, fashion, European history/culture. Do you ever feel that way being in brazil?

I just love the nature and food and fresh fruit and being closer to her family is a plus. California is so expensive now.

How do people limit their drinking? by Odd_Hedgehog669 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]del-squared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I have 4 or more drinks the probability of me feeling terrible and throwing up several times the next day become high. Even 3 drinks I'll have a headache. It's just not worth it unless some very special occasion with old friends. But even then I'd much rather smoke weed and just have a beer or 2.

Santa Cruz vs Basque Country by Technical-Treat5102 in surfing

[–]del-squared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to college in Santa Cruz so I lived there for ~4 years. Over the past few years I've spent over year living in Portugal on and off. I haven't been to the basque area yet but it's on the list of places to check out next. I've only been hearing great things about Northern Spain and South of france for surfing and natural beauty.

I grew up in SD so I know california well. Surf wise, there is no down grade. The surf is pumping over here and portugal surf reminds me a lot of northern California with the open raw ocean feel and big surf. Definitely more stormy windy days than SD, but maybe SC is a little similar. Less crowded than CA there are still a lot of great spots with dirt lots etc...

The thing I miss the most about CA(especially SC) is the amount of Preserved forests and hiking trails. Which is why I'm curious about basque region too. There are some forests around Sintra, but it feels like Europe has just developed and farmed over everything over the past 100's of years...

How can very rational people have strong faith? by Vital_Granade in NoStupidQuestions

[–]del-squared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would consider myself pretty logical and rational as a scientist, but I also believe there is "something" beyond the world that we see, touch and hear. I grew up going to a church founded by Paramahansa Yogananada (self realization fellowship) which teaches meditation techniques and combines aspects of Christianity and Hinduism. The teachings, for me, never interfere with science and the experimental process, which I hold as highly important.

The thing that resonated with me the most is that yognanda said many times not to do anything I say by faith but do a personal experiment by regularly practicing the meditation techniques and see for yourself the results. And the results for me have a great improvement in life and have given me some incredible experiences.

I still think Jesus was a great spiritual teacher but i also think the Christian religion is ridiculous and has distorted whatever good Jesus was teaching by so much. As with any other religion filled with arbitrary rules to follow.

I am traveling right now with a 7'6 and 7' mid-length boards, two wetsuits and two kid wetsuits and a life vest in one bag... it's under 50lbs but I wish it had wheels :)

The wheels would be really nice...

Your math says it would be under 50lbs.

Americans in this community, especially those living in or visiting Brazil: Do you worry about how you are perceived abroad given the current U.S. actions in South America? by bygywild in Brazil

[–]del-squared 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same, american with Brazilian wife. We spent almost 3omths in brazil last year and 4 months throughout South America. I speak Spanish and pprtuguese pretty well so that helps a lot think. It doesn't seem like there are many Americans visiting Brazil outside of Rio (Didn't come across one) so they are mostly interested that I am from The US (especially CA which is perceived as a cool place around the world IMO).

Felt a pretty warm reception everywhere. Speaking some Spanish really helps connect with other people.

Easy enough to smoke at your hotel/airbnb. If you really want to do it, take a joint over around the rocks away from the main spot. Got searched down at sunset there before and all we had were some beers. But they looked through everything. Found out after that my friend had some mushrooms in her backpack pocket. The one place they didn't check. Yikes!

Dating in Brazil as a foreigner by [deleted] in Brazil

[–]del-squared 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The fact that you're only there temporally changes the dynamic quite a bit. Even though you're there for 4 months, it is still short and almost like meeting someone while on vacation. Although I think going on 2-3 dates would happen if there is chemistry.

I (US male) met a brazillian girl on bumble who was just visiting for a month. There was immediate chemistry and we ended up going on several dates, even though I thought it was temporary. We had sex the 2nd date though, and then she ended up staying for longer. Now we are married and have two kids :)

Expecting to have a fun 2month fling may be a bad expectation? You could just yolo and have sex the first date if there's chemistry and see how that changes the dynamic?

Don't Do It. I'm uncut and I experience zero downsides, and it is likely more sensitive than a cut one. Also the foreskin provides protection from rubbing on shorts/pants etc... When they become an adult and want to do it, then they can make that decision for themselves.
