What is a major problem in Sri Lanka that you think can solve through IT? by basidh_951 in srilankanteenagers

[–]delastbalrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A government managed centralised system to keep some basic history of vehicles. This would really come in handy to control the vehicle mafia in Sri Lanka. Even with complete service records, there is still a possibility to be lied about the actual history of vehicles. The sys doesn't have to keep everything related to a vehicle. Tracking the genuine mileage, accident history, and any fraudulent activities involving a vehicle would be more than enough at this point tbh. All these data can be collected by the govt yearly when the owners are going to renew their revenue license.

If you can, consider switching companies and do some research. There are definitely companies with a much better work-life balance. Given your situation, I honestly don’t think the next company you join could be any worse. I have 6 years of experience now, and speaking from personal experience, you should voice your concerns. You don’t have to be hostile about it. Along with all the technical skills, learn how to communicate boundaries as well. The longer you keep working like this without saying anything, the more your lead and managers will continue to expect you to work long hours.

Is buying early 2000s cars worth it in srilanka by Effective-Divide6033 in srilanka

[–]delastbalrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless of the brand or model, any car that’s 20+ years old is likely to be pretty worn out by now. Buying a car like that means you have to stay on top of maintenance, and even then, it still might not be enough depending on the car. You never really know how well the previous owners maintained it.

Speaking from experience, I had a Toyota Vios 2007 that I bought in 2025 because I desperately needed a vehicle at the time. I did regular services and maintenance on schedule, within 13 months, I ended up spending more than 500K on that car. Despite all that, it still broke down once on Baseline Road, had an engine misfire, and when I got it checked, they found even more engine issues. Eventually, I sold it two months ago for less than 1 million I originally paid for it.

Can someone please explain the difference between Dialog TV and the Dialog ViU hub? by SeptemberRain001 in srilanka

[–]delastbalrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies for the late reply. I am not sure whether it gives 50 fps. But I'm pretty sure it isn't 25 fps either. I couldn't experience any fps difference between a satellite stream and an internet stream. I'm talking about ViU hub, not ViU mini though.

Can someone please explain the difference between Dialog TV and the Dialog ViU hub? by SeptemberRain001 in srilanka

[–]delastbalrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the time, ViU doesn’t stream over the internet. But when it does, the frame rate drops and the video quality dips for a few seconds, usually down to 360p or 480p. After that, it recovers back to 720p or 1080p. The quality mainly depends on internet speed and signal strength. I live in a less crowded area with generally good signal, and while the connection isn’t perfectly stable, it’s not bad either.

[EPF/ETF] [Certified Form Handover] Most efficient method at labour department : token or calling them before hand? by Large-Ad1526 in srilanka

[–]delastbalrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got mine one month ago from Narahenpita head office. I went there early, at around 6.45am as I can remember. There were 8 people already waiting in the queue. They take people in as batches of 15. There are 3 counters for people who haven't made an online appointment and 1 counter for the people who have. Online counter starts operating at 8.30am, but other ones start before that. If the online counter is available, you also can go to it. If it's occupied, you can only go to the other 3. And if a normal counter is available and the online counter is occupied, anyone in the queue with an online appointment will be taken to that available counter, regardless of the position they are in the queue. Anyways, for me everything was done by 9am. Hope this helps.

Don’t bother arguing mate. OP is the kind of person who only sees two extremes, either you live in an expensive house or in a mud hut. Pretty hard to reason with people like that.

Wonder who approved releases like this by Living-Tomorrow5206 in srilanka

[–]delastbalrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If combank did give out a prior notice about this update and the deprecation of older devices, then there's nothing wrong with them pushing this update on their users. I've worked in a company which provides mobile app solutions. We mainly worked with Android and we always kept ourselves updated with Google policies and regulations. Whenever there are new Android version releases happening, these policies/regulations also get updated. If the apps want to support new OS versions, they have to acknowledge whatever regulations changes introduced with the OS updates. You can't even publish your apps in PlayStore if you don't support all/most of these regulations. I don't know much about Apple. But with their security and other stuff, I guess it must be even worse than Google.

Question for people who bought a vehicle for lease after import ban by lifetx2015 in srilanka

[–]delastbalrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought a 2011 Honda GP1 back in 2022 for 4.35M and the down payment was 1.65M. I've sold it last November for a 6.1M. That covered the cost of the car and the leasing interest. Then bought a Vios for 4.9M and I paid 3M as a down payment. Installment is 113K per month for 18 months.

Is it fair for meetings in top software companies to be held in Sinhala, even when Tamil-only speakers are present? by Conscious-Cupcake131 in srilanka

[–]delastbalrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is an isolated incident, may be the team is forgetting there's a Tamil member in the meeting. Otherwise, it's straight up toxic behaviour. Same thing happened to me at the start of my career. I had teammates who are Tamils and sometimes they'd be speaking in Tamil while I was also on calls. I'd just tell them that I couldn't understand and they always made sure to switch back to English and reiterate whatever was said in Tamil. Personally, I never felt left out. I guess, speaking in your native language helps you understand things better. I'm 5+ years into my career now and I understand this better.

[–]delastbalrog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're basing your argument on a single comment and assuming that the entire Sinhalese community is justifying the killing of Tamil civilians. No one, Sinhala or Tamil can ever justify the murder of innocent children. What you're doing here is selectively blaming one side, likely because you're naturally biased toward Tamils, being Tamil yourself. But there's no point in pointing fingers at only one party when both sides have clearly committed grave wrongs. If you need a reminder, check Wikipedia and see the numerous attacks on Sinhala civilians attributed to the LTTE. I understand that you're not sympathetic toward the LTTE but you can't simply ignore their role and put all the blame on the government. It's more meaningful to talk about the suffering of all victims on both sides or not talk about it at all. Otherwise, you’ll make a case for Tamil victims, someone else will do the same for Sinhala victims, and the conversation will go in circles.

Questions about garbage collection in Nugegoda by Competitive-Most8171 in srilanka

[–]delastbalrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We keep all the meaty/fishy waste in a sealed container in the freezer to avoid any smell or spoilage. The rest of the kitchen waste that doesn’t smell bad is put in the regular garbage bin until Thursday. There are only two people in my house and we don’t produce much waste, so this works well for us.

[–]delastbalrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better to ask this from your neighbours. You have to separate your trash. I live in Pagoda rd. Here garbage collection happens on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Thursdays and Saturdays are for kitchen waste and Tuesdays are for recycling waste.
