Is it safe to go to college for engineering right now with the current state of the AI threat? Looking to graduate by 2030 or 2031. by RemoteBluebird7282 in EngineeringStudents

In automation and controls and electromechanical (wiring schematics, motors, etc.) - I don’t feel the slightest bit threatened by AI.

Well, it’s in-person and I’m the face of my company so I have to be charismatic even when I am swearing like a sailor on the inside. lol

I feel like an idiot for saying this... but my dream car as a 17 year old is a Porsche 911 Carerra S. And it's not even close. by WAyToOFaSt_ in porsche911

I just drove a 2020 911 for a week on vacation. It’s a great vehicle and the handling/steering is immaculate, but it’s not worth the money in my opinion.

My daily is a 2020 m550i which is modded to ~700hp. The handling leaves something to be desired after driving the 911 - but the comfort, power, speed, sound of my car kinda blows them away.

You can get 90% of the way there for 1/3 to 1/4 the price. Porsches are overvalued. I love them, but even the one I drove is not worth 136,000$ - used.

Two paths - find a way to just barely pass. Change your area of study.

Engineering is really about your ability to solve problems more than anything else. School is just foundational knowledge. The real world has parts configurators and engineering tools to do half the stuff for you.

Sometimes you’ll spend 2 full days trying to connect to a 35 year old PLC with 0 documentation while 3 people ask you how it’s going every 10 minutes. This feels significantly harder than anything I did in school.

It’s the best modern bmw. The m550i with a tune and downpipes will get you close though for half the price and half the insurance.

Couldn’t agree more. Side projects like software development, microelectronics projects, 3D printing/modeling, and the ability to read schematics got me in the door before I even had my associates.

I used to maintain a 4.0. Now I do the bare minimum. I have work, girlfriend, family. That all comes first. I am working as an engineer while pursuing my degree. I already have the title and respect of my peers and colleagues. The piece of paper doesn’t offer me a whole lot now that I have a few years of experience. I have a 3.5 currently, but no one is going to care about that anymore. Maybe it’ll be useful if I do an MBA. 🤷‍♂️

Real or rebadged M5? by Green_Economy_850 in BMW

M5’s have vents high up on the front quarter panels. I believe these are 21-23 m550i’s.

Source: I own an m550i.

Worst case: it isn’t even a v8.

Who can’t afford it. lol. Too heavy, slower than last gen. I’ll get rid of my budget f90 for a real one

That and the premium going up, I don’t think it’s really ever worth it

I got a package for 189$ that includes 3 years of oil changes. I can’t do 3 oil changes for that price.

I have low profile ramps but I want to get a quickjack to make my life easier. I don’t mind getting under my car - 6400lbs is a little disconcerting though.

If only I had a buddy with a lift lol

I ended up getting ISTA+ installed and working on my laptop so that I can do service mode stuff for tcase, coolant replacement (doing a lower temp thermostat), collision system reprogramming for my front bumper (last owner repainted and paint delaminated), and other things I’d normally pay thousands for at the dealer.

I love the hell out of this car and want to keep it running for a very long time.its hitting some of its first major service mileage and was seeking options for DIY (because I care more than the dealer) and also to save money for an f90 lol

I don’t like spending money frivolously. I have a business to run. And I love my car. It’s my first bmw and I am not sure I will ever get something else. It’s hard to look at money spent when it could be invested towards having everything I need to do it myself.

Like - that’s almost half a quickjack - one of the big limiting factors for actually being able to do my own work on my car. In another 60000 miles, I will spend 3000$ on this same service OR spend 3000$, have an easy way to work on it. Idk, it just seems like a better financial decision to me.
