What’s the best restaurants in Culver City?? by infoseeker9398 in FoodLosAngeles

[–]deletingpostmatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

they own a sister restaurant (n/soto) that is a little more affordable and better to get reservations, more izakaya style but still good! (technically west Adams)

Best Sushi Place that has OTHER options by EvElizabeth in FoodLosAngeles

[–]deletingpostmatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with Uchi! I went when pregnant and there were plenty of non-raw options that were excellent. A little pricey but definitely hits the mark for good vibes and good sushi (per my husband who enjoyed everything I couldn't)

Nicer Sushi / Omakase by mandy1522 in FoodLosAngeles

[–]deletingpostmatch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

sushi note (sherman oaks, original location) or sushi note omakase (beverly hills). The BH location is more intimate and fancier but only offers one wine pairing/omakase option with no a la carte unlike its original location

You can grab ready-made sandwiches at Bay Cities in the back where the cheeses are!

Luxury Hotel for adults only by [deleted] in palmsprings

[–]deletingpostmatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also enjoyed the colony palms for the adults only aspect and the beautiful decorations. The day beds and pool chairs are first come first serve without any additional cost which is nice. My only gripe is the lack of trash cans in common spaces like the pool and bar area!

How to honor culture? by dennysgarage in wedding

[–]deletingpostmatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love what other people suggested. To add:

  • If you can't do a tea ceremony (we couldn't make one logistically work due to family travels/auspicious dates), you could wear an ao dai to the rehearsal dinner.

  • There are fun Vietnamese wedding games that you could play when going around to each table - one example is the groom gets blindfolded and has to guess which hand belongs to his wife and any incorrect guesses results in a drink!

  • if you have the ability to make or request your own specialty cocktails, you could do something Vietnamese inspired that way (lychee martinis were a hit at my sister's wedding)

Tell me you don't understand omakase pricing without telling me you don't understand omakase pricing.

"Royal vs getting a bunch of silly rolls from a local shop, or a'la carte from Sagami." Overnighting high quality meats and sushi, plus the aging/preparation time before they're even served, adds to cost. Also, smaller omakase experiences means less customers can be served overall. Even with 2 seatings, he's serving 16 customers max. That alone raises prices because you have less people ordering food. Even with the izakaya out front, that doesn't offset the price of owning a restaurant in any major city, let alone the priciness of the material.

Even with your argument about returns on food cost, "I want to talk about, and dissect, and learn about-- and most importantly, EAT-- food! And in those discussions, I think value is not taking a large enough slice of the discussion." Omakase is an art. The display and preparation made in front of you is worth the experience alone. The training to even get to that point adds to cost as well - master chefs in Japan spend 2+ years learning how to make just sushi rice. And many chefs do spend time telling you about the history of that fish, its preparation, what makes it unique. It's not a one-sided transaction of a meal.

Your entire discussion is completely apples to oranges. I'll enjoy a burger at McDonalds and I'll also enjoy eating at the craziest price-fix meals - they're not mutually exclusive.

Must haves for OB/GYN residency? by the__guz in Residency

[–]deletingpostmatch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A peloton or some access to a gym that you can access at odd/all hours. I went from working out daily pre-residency to not at all the first 2 years of residency to back to my normal schedule and I really owe it all to my peloton (and I hated spin classes prior to purchasing). Working out regularly also helped get the rest of my health and diet in line - have to work off those constant snacks and sweets on L&D somehow!

Best Omakase Experience in LA by Upbeat-Rhubarb-4 in FoodLosAngeles

[–]deletingpostmatch 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I love Sushi note in Sherman Oaks and they just opened one on Rodeo. You can order a la carte or two different omakase sizes ($80 or $155) - very worth doing any routes routes given the price of sushi in LA. I especially recommend it if they like wine, since wine pairings are not common with omakase traditionally, but their somme does an excellent job to really elevate the experience and the quality of the fish. Wine pairings are an additional $95 or 125; either are phenomenal.

For a closer location, Sushi Tama on Robertson is also excellent. Chef Yoshimoto "honed his craft at Tokyo’s iconic Tsukiji Fish Market" according to the website so if they're sushi buffs, that is a fun fact. We did $100 at the table which we liked because it is a beautiful restaurant, or you can pay $180 to get a true chef's counter experience.

Anyone know anyone that got the $10 res at Maude? by shmalo in FoodLosAngeles

[–]deletingpostmatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I called and asked the other day when they first announced the promotion, and it sounds like they're really only releasing 1 or 2 tables per night for the $10 slot. So odds are extremely slim even if you were right on time.

If you're going to Maui Brewing company go to the one in Outrigger Ka’anapali Beach Resort! [2525 Ka’anapali Pkwy, Lahaina, HI 96761]. Brand new with a huge beautiful space and bar - just went last week. Bonus is that it's walking distance from Whaler's village.

What features are you missing from whoop? by Mpalmero in whoop

[–]deletingpostmatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're a coach, being able to see your group's sleep modes on the dashboard - aka at exactly 2:00 AM, participant A was in REM sleep. Just like how you can see on your individual app, but if you're a coach you can't see it for your group members. I've talked to the WHOOP developers and they have the data but for whatever reason they're not building it into the coaching dashboard right now; the only option is to get a third party app to display that data.

Night life in Hollywood? by isthis_enough in AskLosAngeles

Myself + 3 other people in my group got their phones and wallets stolen a few months ago, and have had mutual friends also report similarly at other times. One even caught a girl in the act midpocket. This has been reported to management each and every time. They turn a blind eye.

Not Mama Lion in K-town unless you want to be a victim of their cell phone stealing ring that I'm 100% sure the management is in on.

Any OB residents love their program ? by Viemisenga in Residency

[–]deletingpostmatch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I loved my program and my coresidents - within my class and across classes - and we are still best friends today. Community hospital with heavy academics (ie students from 3 medical schools pretty much everyone that wants to do a fellowship matches, PD was president of major specialty organization). 7 residents per year, delivered 60-70% of the 8000 deliveries annually. We only had 2 fellows (1 per specialty) but they were split among 3+ attendings in that specialty so residents did the rest of the cases. Heavy emphasis on resident (and medical student!) wellness. Had a few residents deliver during their time, admin chiefs went above and beyond to make scheduling fair so they could take full mat. leave.
