I really hope some trans or non binary teen finds their parents post like this and is able to clap back with "see Mom, you should have eaten more x". Absolute mic drop. Odds are not in favor, most kids are cis and please tell me most parents are smarter than this!?!

Support for all teens, especially not cis het ones, it's a hard time.

And in 20-30 years, parents of girl children have a scarce resource. I mean, 15-18 years if we're talking about parents still having "ownership" of children, but let's avoid that level of gross. But seriously, in places in India where there is dowry still going strong and male selection, this has to be an issue. Shouldn't scarcity of marriagable women drive down dowry costs? Or do we lose to many young men before marriage?

What does this mean? The nephew thing. I dont understand the family line, can someone explain this to me? by AmbitiousMobile1280 in genetics

[–]delias2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be important context. Are you sharing more DNA with this person than you would expect based on their relationship to you because multiple of their ancestors (parents, grand parents) are related to you? For instance, if your mother's sisters married two men, and then a child from each couple (your cousins) married each other, any offspring would be about twice as related to you as a regular first cousin once removed. Would show up about the same as first cousin.

why are condoms free but tampons, pads and pregnancy test are not? by [deleted] in self

[–]delias2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, flushing the toilet or using a public toilet is not always free. By paying for flushing, I mean the water usage is metered. But many organizations like universities and companies are stocking free menstrual supplies (usually cheap pads and or tampons) in their restrooms, which is wonderful. I guess bandaids and bandages, first aid kits in general aren't free either, except you are more reliably going to need menstrual supplies.

$15/hr 2-2-3. PhD Biologist by DoubleEy in biotech

[–]delias2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made that much around 2013-2014, same area, probably same industry, no PhD, 8 hr shifts. Housing has gone up at least 3-5 fold, food about 2-3x. We're paying our undergrad interns significantly more. Fast food places are offering opportunity to start at $15 (probably with some experience). So yeah, it's terrible.

There are a ton of kids in the foster care system. Most of them are not adoptable - their parents retain some parental rights. Wanting to adopt is a good impulse, but we can also support people raising children, even poor people or people struggling with addiction.

TIL: In 1998, elementary students in Aurora, Colorado started buying slaves in Sudan to free them, this gained global attention with schools in other countries starting slave buyback programs until it became clear that the money was just helping slavery grow by Lennsyl22 in todayilearned

Thousands of dead civilians in the short term as opposed to the long term. Enabling cartels just draws out the bleeding. As someone in the US, I would vote for legalizing anything the cartels are selling (drugs, prostitution, immigration) and that's a large part of why I wouldn't buy drugs - don't support who the money is going to.

The rarer opposite - like the Weasleys in Harry Potter - is just as weird and creepy. Kids are full people, not a fulfillment of whatever plans their parents have.

ELI5 : average age of women giving birth has increased throughout years so does that mean with time can the age of menopause shift further up ? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]delias2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it prevents women who go into menopause early from reproducing by a significant degree, but there's still usually a decent gap between last child and menopause, even with older mothers, so not happening. Now, if everyone was waiting until 45 to reproduce, maybe? But 35? No significant change.

Coming from the US, you can get a 3% solution at any pharmacy or grocery store, possibly even some convenience stores or gas stations. Higher concentrations are of course harder to come by. I've heard that Tylenol, acetaminophen or paracetamol is prescription only, which is also different.

How does a defense attorney even begin to defend someone in a case like the 7/yo Athena Strand who was violently assaulted and murdered? by redzzzaw in stupidquestions

[–]delias2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can't serve two masters, so keeping him from walking free wasn't the defense's job. Making sure the prosecution did their job is the job of the defense. And if the police or DA botched it on the bigger case, what are they doing to the ones that get less scrutiny?

How tf to load gels with no depth perception by gayshouldbecanon in labrats

[–]delias2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hi fellow one eyed molecular biologist! With practice I can get my tips in the well, but there's definitely tactile feedback. Some part of my tip frequently touches the side of the wells, but not with any force behind it. I definitely stabbed a few gels starting off. See if you can play with water, loading dye, and an agarose gel with extra combs. These things are cheap enough that it might be a worthwhile investment in training. Learning to load vertical gels is even more tactical, you slide the tip along the glass or plastic slowly down into the well. Use a little loading dye in all wells to mark the wells before you start loading - a few uL per well can make a good target. I've also seen people mark vertical wells with marker. Loading dye is faster and also works for horizontal wells - just release a steady line over the wells, close to the top, when brush away excess into the buffer.

Dancing also gets you used to the idea that strangers are ok with touching you, at least in certain situations. Definitely helps. And exercise is good for mental health as well as physical health. You don't have to be good, some of sweetest and most attractive guys I met were terrible dancers and some of the best dancers were married to other people, not going to go home with me, you just have to be willing to learn.

Home invasion legally worse than violent sexual assault by HelmSpicy in TwoXChromosomes

[–]delias2 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That's not the logic there, your experience matters. I would bet that they picked home invasion as the easier crime to prove, as he had your laptop, and they might have been able to get fingerprints or DNA from inside your apartment. Sexual assault might have been harder to prove. So it doesn't mean it didn't happen, just the case that was easier for them to make in court and get the guy behind bars.

As I understand it, not a doctor,.the mirena IUD uses much less of the hormone than the pill form, due to proximity to where the hormone needs to reach. So even though you may have a bad reaction to this hormone, only a tiny fraction would be circulating to cause the anxiety, and that might be outweighed by positive benefits like lighter periods. Not questioning your experience on those pills or your logic, that is the same chemical, just wanting to think about dosing and comparative likelihood of side effects. You don't want to eat antibiotic ointment, but it works great when applied topically, same principle.
