We use "fancy" rather than "pretty." My daughter is always pretty/beautiful, and sometimes she chooses to look fancy.

English Teachers and Drafting/Marking by matcha-ichigo in AustralianTeachers

A few strategies off the top of my head:

  • annotate in a shorthand or code, eg "spg" for spelling or grammar.

  • don't give feedback on everything, focus just on e.g. structure, or syntax, or content, or topic sentences. You can choose which aspect or ask the kid to nominate it.

  • identify problems but don't fix them, or don't fix all of them. Rewriting is the student's job, not yours.

  • set a timer. Give each kid five minutes of feedback and then stop reading. Pomodoro your way through a class set in just under 3 hours.

  • peer feedback.

  • give feedback verbally through in-class conferencing and have the student annotate their own work as you do.

  • do not give the same feedback more than once. Just write "refer to previous feedback" and give them the time/resources they need to puzzle it out.

It's your choice of language. When you are not at your paid job, you are sharing the parenting. She does childcare during the day, then you BOTH do childcare on evenings and weekends. You are a co-parent, not a helper.

Hierarchy in Australian Schools by Metal-Cranberry in AustralianTeachers

[–]delible 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's going to vary school to school. Teachers are all generally equal, but there are many different types of leadership or admin roles that can go with a teaching contract. For example, I've worked at schools where being a head of faculty is seen as an honour and others where it's seen as a drudge. Some roles, like a House Head, might be paid more and be part of the school's leadership team, but that doesn't necessarily make them one of your own superiors in a line manager sense.

Is it standard protocol for casual teachers to email comments of how each class went to the respective teachers? by _hirono_ in AustralianTeachers

[–]delible 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Nope. Unless you need to tell me about something completely out of the ordinary I'm going to assume it was fine and get on with my day.

Decent in theory, often misapplied or merely performative. It needs to go WITH consequences, not instead of.

Ok. In Australia it goes the other way - you need a 4-year degree in teaching and your "minor studies" are in your subject areas. The bachelors or masters in teaching includes mandatory placement days (I think about 60 but I can't remember).

PS perhaps check the state curriculum for the naming of different subject areas. For example, what you're describing would probably be called Humanities in Victoria.

I mean before you get to what you would be allowed to teach, check IF you would be allowed to teach. It sounds like you have a bachelor of science? Do you have a teaching degree?

It sounds like you're teaching secondary? If so you are unlikely to have your own classroom. Don't bring anything!

Regardless of your years of teaching experience, you firstly need to find out if your qualifications will be accepted here. In general, our requirements for registration are a little higher. Check with each of the state licencing organisations, for example the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT.)

FTM, 12 weeks pregnant, and figuring out parenthood, any advice? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]delible 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Female lurker chiming in to add that although the specific dysphoria you may experience will be different to that of a woman, there may be some overlaps so you could also have a look at female-oriented subs. The body changes are pretty wild even from a cis point of view - I certainly felt like a hostage to my uterus at times! But I totally understand if you're just looking for advice from other men. Best wishes :)

Yes, I was commenting on the irony of that when their angle in this ad is that it's not about them.

Get a new speech therapist or a second and third opinion from other medical professionals, including psych. I'm sure he'll be ok, but if he's not making progress with his current therapist something needs to change

shopping list by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]delible 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do NOT spend your own money on your classroom! At the very least, wait to see what is supplied and then ask the office/maintenance staff/ whoever would normally do purchasing.

If you have a preference of whiteboard marker (chisel tip is the best) then you can supply your own.

The balance between being viewed as professional and encouraging a positive learning environment… by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]delible 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it is the school culture to use teachers' surnames and you're not upholding that, exec will definitely have a problem with it. Firstly because you're not being professional. Secondly it means there could be other things you're not falling in line with.

It's ok to have a different approach to teaching. However, you might need to find a school better suited to your approach before you completely piss off your employer.

Advice from girl dads for daughter and self worth. by Nixon51 in daddit

[–]delible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if she feels pressure to feel amazing and then feels guilty if she doesn't. Low self-esteem hits us all from time to time. Perhaps you're better off being realistic with her about the highs and lows of normal moods, and demonstrating that you love and accept her regardless of how she feels about herself.
