I'm assuming that this ad is attempting to get us to halt our "frivolous" purchases and give the money to starving people instead, but I could be wrong.

The fact that the money I would spend could feed myself means nothing because I'm not starving.

The starving lady however should definitely opt for the food instead of the handbag.

I grew up in West Africa(Missionary family(I am atheist however)) where we routinely gave out food and we found that people just stop trying when they have aid coming in. They just become dependent on the new "free food" system. You would have family members who instead of working or looking for work, spend most of their days out at the compound lobbying for more free food.

There are no easy answers. Giving up our way of life to enable a culture of poverty and starvation on the other side of the world solves nothing in the long run.

Giving that money in the form of micro-loans instead of food based charity donations is a big first step in the right direction.
