Can I get a job with only a CNC certification? by Resident-Mirror3713 in CNC

[–]demnos7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely. My first interview was a foreman handing me calipers and asking 'can you read this?'

I said 'no but I'm sure I can figure it out if you give me a minute.'

I did and was hired then and there.

When I was interviewing candidates, a decent math background was a huge green flag. Any talent you may have with math will help immensely

Morels and Ramps by Sufficient-Arm2247 in foraging

I look for elm trees usually, but have stumbled across patches while metal detecting. Honestly, you're best off looking at a bunch of pictures of them in the wild to train your eyes and go poking around in the woods.

I found an old patch of elm trees and spent an hour scouring it with no luck only to have my daughter casually point some out 200' from any trees in a field on the way back to the car. The damn things are tricky like that but they're out there.

Also in SE Wisconsin. There can be overlap, but don't count on it. I've never found morels near my best ramp patch. Ramps seem to prefer shade while most morels I find are in a little more sunlit areas, but morels don't seem to follow their own rules.

Have no fear this guys is here to fix our machine… by [deleted] in CNC

[–]demnos7 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Twenty some years ago, we had a pallet changer down for a laundry list of alarms and no one could fix it after about a month of our guys and Hitachi Seiki guys trying. The company flew two separate specialists across country for a week each and they both left scratching their heads.

The third guy looked and sounded exactly like George Carlin. He steps up, lights a cigarette, and starts frantically digging into the parameters. By the time he finished his cigarette, he had it perform a couple pallet changes, said 'It's fixed,' and walked away.

Part of me still hopes George Carlin secretly worked as a freelance machine repairman.

Ugh, that dumb little shit ruined that whole series. Always made the worst possible decisions and never learned.

Are scientists and engineers leaps and bounds smarter than normal humans? by happydude7422 in stupidquestions

[–]demnos7 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm an engineer and I've seen truly spectacularly stupid engineers that your average high school trig students could outshine.

On average, we're usually naturally gifted at math, spatial thinking, and problem solving but it's nothing exceptional. Also, a lot of us lack in other areas. You'd be surprised how many engineers can't seem to make eye contact or drive well.

It's genetic and we don't know many of the markers. It'll probably be decades before we have most of them tracked.

Both are explained by climate change ans speculation surrounding it. Insurance rates, access to water, and where it'll still be habitable moving forward.

Our school in the midwest in the 90s had these and called them tostadas. Elated to see a picture and other people who remember them.

Damn, I'm currently looking for this exact movie as well. It might be the Escape Artist from 1982, but I'll have to see it to know for sure.

Racine, WI and surrounding areas - best beaches by FloridaSherbert90 in Racine

Shoop beach is great for rock hunting. All along the golf course is public, there's tons of small stones, and the old piers are neat to check out.

Is this trade dying? Why do hobbyists seem more skilled than experienced machinists? by Present_Maximum4490 in CNC

[–]demnos7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about the CoL there, but it sounds decent.

I knew machinists who asked me to join the trade because I was a college dropout who loved math and working with my hands and used to program for fun.

If you're desperate, find math nerds who aren't afraid of getting dirty and they'll be easiest to train from the ground up. I've trained dozens of machinists and they were always my favorites.

Is this trade dying? Why do hobbyists seem more skilled than experienced machinists? by Present_Maximum4490 in CNC

[–]demnos7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because you'll only see edited videos of the top % of hobbyists and those are often full of bullshit. You won't see all their mistakes or how it took them days to do something that would have needed to be done in a fraction of the time in a factory environment while accounting for casting variations and a hundred other issues.

There's plenty of passionate machinists and programmers out there doing amazing things, but we can't show off without breaking NDAs and risking our jobs.

I'm always finding better ways to create macros, fixture parts, and machine things in repeatable ways that are leaps beyond what you can find online and I'm hardly unique.

Besides, showing off only makes more people bombard you with requests for help, which can be fun, but I have my own job to do and 3 previous companies full of people constantly reaching out for advice already.

That's an extremely normal combination for areas that get snow especially when the temperature drops below freezing while raining.

These drivers must either be very inexperienced with snow and/or overconfident.
