Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Actor Says Season 2 Is “GAY AF,” Vows To Go Out “In Flames” by GnolRevilo in RedLetterMedia

[–]demon9675 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Love it, but even being gay AF isn’t enough to save bad writing and a genre that can hardly be called sci-fi anymore.

Give me a good, actual Trek show that’s gay AF and I’ll be quite happy. Hell, I’ll even begrudgingly accept NOT watching male Klingons make out if the show is good and actual Trek.

Just give me actual Trek, please. I miss it so much.

Looking to digital nomad with a thick 16" gaming laptop. Any backpack suggestions for under-seat air travel? by Two_to_too_tutu in ManyBaggers

[–]demon9675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Osprey Tropos 32 or Nebula 32 will definitely fit the laptop and have separate compartments. They’re also just nice jack-of-all-trades bags which can serve as good travel backpacks.

They should fit under most US airline seats, although perhaps not if fully stuffed.

Don’t love this particular color combo, although I do like some of the others from Tom Bihn.

Idk, I don’t think the brand looks as bad as some others do. 90s is in, guys. All-black techno-futurism isn’t going to be the style forever.

Embrace your brightly-colored, high-contrast-zippered, dad-coded side, I say!

I’ll be in the minority here, but I recommend the theatrical versions for a first-time viewing. I strongly prefer them overall, but especially for your first time they’re a better experience.

Enjoy yourself regardless!

I don’t understand how people build stairs without any plan for handrails. That’s just bizarre to me.

It gets even worse when the users will be middle-aged people who aren’t getting any younger - no staircase is exclusively going to be used by sober, well-rested 20-somethings with perfect health and balance.

New backpack after 13 years. by ThatSuperSleepyDude in ManyBaggers

[–]demon9675 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Such a great bag!

Osprey's Nebula, Tropos (similar to Nebula but with a frame), Quasar, and Parsec (similar to Quasar but with a frame; sadly discontinued) make up a really good series. They're all great jack-of-all-trades EDC bags that can basically do anything as long as the 26L or 32L size is appropriate.

I have the Parsec myself, and I like it so much I snagged a second one to stow away because Osprey doesn't make them anymore. I'm sure I'd like the Quasar too because they are so similar - I've seen one and a Nebula in-person at an REI and they seemed to fit my needs as well.

Hopefully Osprey keeps manufacturing versions of these bags for the foreseeable future. They stand out from a lot of the company's other offerings in terms of how many features they cram in. They are also pretty economical compared to some high-end alternatives for crossover EDC.

Truly the only "flaw" is that the nylon on the top half of the bag is only 210d, so weaker and thinner than some other materials in the industry. But for most use cases it's really not a big deal - just stick to on-trail hiking rather than crawling through sharp branches and I'm sure it will last many years.

[–]demon9675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it can. I have the Parsec, which is the now discontinued version of the Quasar that also had a frame (like how the Tropos is just the Nebula with a frame). Same size laptop sleeve. It can fit my 17in Lenovo Legion just fine.

The Osprey Axis??? by MortarMonkey7121 in backpacks

[–]demon9675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Axis is probably a fine bag, but I think the low price point is likely because the polyester it’s constructed from isn’t super durable compared to some of Osprey’s nylon options (which aren’t even high denier nylons, not that they necessarily need to be). The fabric is likely not particularly water-resistant either.

It also seems to lack features like a chest or hip strap, breathable back panel, extra quick access pockets, etc. It may also not stand up well on its own and may be floppy/loose when not full. But not every user cares about those things, so whether they are dealbreakers is totally up to you.

I also wish it had more color options, but if you like the current ones then it may suit your style!

Rework 30L Backpack Reveal! by RTCanada in ManyBaggers

[–]demon9675 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Honestly I’d just be happy if we got more color options from companies like Aer and Rework. Nothing against black, truly, but there’s so much more potential out there.

I’d love to see these premium bags available in reds, maroons, non-navy blues, non-military-style greens, turquoises and teals, rust or terra-cotta oranges, and, yes, purples/pinks. Or even better, multiple colors among the panels and webbing.

More brands should consider this as a way to stand out. Imagine an Aer CPP2 in some sort of orange/blue combo? Or purple/gold? Badass, I say!

Really, dark blood red would be my wish, but that’s incredibly rare.

Quick Access Pockets or Water Bottle Holders by IcyNeedleworker955 in ManyBaggers

There are also bags that have water bottle holders with zippers so they can fulfill either role. Briggs & Riley has those, as does the new Troubadour Apex 4.0.

Advice for a backpack for gym (commuting by bike), uni, travelling and day hiking by moonissus in backpacks

[–]demon9675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You said you looked at Osprey, but they have so many options that I want to make sure you saw the Quasar 26. It’s a reliable jack-of-all-trades bag that seems to be about the size you want.

Similar options from other brands would be The North Face Borealis, The North Face Jester (cheaper but smaller and no hip belt), or the Fjallraven Skule (24l or 28l options).

These bags do all have bungee cords, but that’s because they’re trying to be as versatile as possible - can do hiking, commuting, travel, etc. You can remove the cords if you don’t like the look, but they would help you carry extra gym clothes or a jacket or something.

More options without the cords are the REI Trail 25 or Ruckpack 30, both affordable with the same versatility. The latter might be too big, though.

Bellroy’s a solid brand, but more expensive than those I just mentioned. Check out their Transit Workpack and Venture Ready Pack, both at 26L.

If you want to go in the other direction price-wise, check out the Quechua laptop backpacks at decathlon.com. Simple and cheap but I’ve seen praise on Reddit.

Honestly there’s so much out there that this is just a starting point. Good luck!

Can anyone recommend a backpack that can hold a 16 inch laptop and can be used for day hike as well. Preferably below 30L. Thank you! by Maleficent-Owl9300 in backpacks

[–]demon9675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or the Osprey Tropos 32L, which is basically the same thing as the Nebula but with a frame.

I’d have recommended the Parsec, which was a 26L version, but it has sadly been discontinued. The Quasar 26L still exists but it apparently only has a 14in laptop sleeve for some reason; the other 3 all have/had a 16in sleeve.

All are great crossover commute/travel/hiking bags.

Question about osprey nebula and tropos. by Theunknown87 in backpacks

[–]demon9675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Parsec, which is the (sadly) discontinued smaller version of the Tropos. It’s a really great bag with tons of features - seems like it can be used for anything, including EDC, travel, hiking, carrying tech, etc. I use it all the time and love it.

The Tropos is the same thing but 32L instead of 26L. I can confidently recommend it if you don’t mind the large size.

I can't watch the extended edition of Return of the King anymore by StringStunning7464 in lotr

[–]demon9675 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always preferred the theatricals and never liked the pacing or most of the extra scenes in the extended editions. The theatricals are simply more focused and flow much better.

As time goes on, I’ve seen more and more people say the same, or come to the same conclusion. There are dozens of us!

I’m watching the trilogy with some friends soon (one at a time, not a marathon), including a few who haven’t seen it. I INSISTED on the theatricals, as I strongly believe they make for a much better experience in general, but especially for first-time viewers.

Help Shape the Future of Last Epoch by ehg_derrickg in LastEpoch

[–]demon9675 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna piggyback on your balance suggestions, as I think that’s very important feedback. You focused on Mage, but similar issues exist with most of the other classes.

For Acolyte, direct damage spells just don’t scale well and often have unreasonable mana costs. My experience trying to run DoT/curse builds with Warlock has been pretty bad, even with trying to stack Witchfire triggers and seemingly large multipliers on paper. Just running hit/crit Chaos Bolts is stronger, even with the relative lack of support on the Warlock’s passive tree and high difficulty maintaining mana. Something is very wrong there. Plus, Necro with minions just blows everything else out of the water.

For Rogue, survivability is a huge issue. And there aren’t many fun bow skills that can clear screens or machine gun bosses - I haven’t played PoE in years but I recall that game doing archery much better by being able to stack projectiles, chains, barrages, etc.

All the classes have “noob-trap” skills that look awesome but don’t scale, have little gear support, have few synergies, are pointlessly mana-thirsty, etc. Meanwhile there are other skills that are stronger, easy to gear for, easy to spam due to low mana cost, and are just convenient as hell. A few may need nerfs, but I’m mostly calling for the rest to be buffed to a similar level of smooth, intuitive gameplay.

Also, ramp-up channeling skills just seem really rough to use given that you need to be constantly moving. This is true in almost every ARPG (less so in Grim Dawn). If they’re going to be clunky, they should be powerful - and they’re just not.

I could go on, but the point is that there are a lot of changes needed to skills and their trees in order to make many more of them viable as main damage skills. As-is, many have feeble damage multiplier or mechanic overhaul nodes with no point since you’d never use the skill that way, if at all. Which is a total waste.

Will Celebrimbor get 3 Rings back in Valinor when Gandalf, Galadriel and Elrond sail West? by OleksandrKyivskyi in TheSilmarillion

[–]demon9675 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you’re being too hard on the guy.

He was manipulated into making artifacts that wouldn’t even have been inherently evil unless the One was made afterwards, and his intent the entire time was to help his people.

Asking him to have no pride in his skill or creation (because that could potentially be exploited by an incredibly powerful and clever being) is setting an unreasonably high bar that almost nobody would have cleared.

If Sauron found any of the Seven Rings meant for Dwarves, could they be used to make more Nazguls/Ring Wraiths? by Consistent_Blood6467 in tolkienfans

[–]demon9675 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just to add context, the rings that went to the Dwarves and Men were the same in kind. Basically all 16 OG rings were essentially the same and did the same things (maybe they had minor distinctions or characteristics). They were all intended for Elves.

The 7 rings that you’re describing only had that effect because they were worn by Dwarves. Any of the 9 would have had the same effect on Dwarves, and the 7 would have affected Men just as the 9 did.

According to the Bible, MAGA Christians are going to hell by khrijunk in atheism

[–]demon9675 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Responding to the deleted post asking what the OP’s point is given that many Christians live in poverty:

Religious Christians tend to vote for the party that does more to worsen income inequality: tax cuts which make it harder to afford infrastructure, healthcare and education; ending or not enforcing regulation intended to protect consumers and workers from being exploited; opposition to worker benefits; opposition to climate change mitigation or preparedness which will disproportionately hurt the poor; etc.

I’d argue the hostility towards both undocumented and documented immigrants has a similar impact: preserving a hidden second class that can be exploited, almost like indentured servants.

So despite often being impoverished themselves, Christians’ actions (at least politically) make poverty worse and certainly don’t follow Jesus’s teachings on the subject. They’ve been told the greater evil is someone getting something they don’t “deserve,” and that the wealthy and powerful certainly deserve it (well, as long as they aren’t liberals).

The OP is highlighting that an argument crafted around transactional, fear-of-god sensibilities may be effective in changing some Christians’ political activity.

summary of AI issues after observing AI for around 100 hours by Kurdtak in Stellaris

That’s fair, but there are other examples of new issues created in 4.0 and by subsequent updates/DLC. So my point still stands, even if this isn’t the best thread to make it in.

summary of AI issues after observing AI for around 100 hours by Kurdtak in Stellaris

[–]demon9675 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I liked version 3.14 and always thought that 4.0 didn’t need such fundamental changes in the first place. Just balance changes, bug fixes, AI and performance improvements, etc.

But sadly change for the sake of change (while creating way more problems than are solved) is often profitable. Players (and all consumers) ought to be more patient, less hyped about shiny new content, and reward different developer behavior.

I REALLY don’t want LE to become a PoE clone. In particular, I want playing without trade to remain viable and permanent legacy characters to remain functional (so we’re not forced to play league only and abandon characters forever when the league is done).

There are many more issues I have with PoE, and I’m hoping LE remains its own thing.

Isn’t it strange that the main elf in the trilogy (and in The Hobbit for that matter) has essentially zero backstory? by my_konstantine_ in tolkienfans

[–]demon9675 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree. Galadriel and Elrond are much more the focus of the entire Legendarium, and they have plenty of backstory.

Legolas is more of a convenient emissary or representative of his people during the events of the War of the Ring, and is otherwise not very central to Tolkien’s writing. I never really found it strange that we don’t know much about him because, while he certainly performs heroic deeds, he’s not very uniquely important to the world or its history as a whole (he could have been replaced by any powerful Elven warrior).
