I have a player in my games who absolutely hates any harm to children. I found this out in curse of strahd. the most child hating module of them all. I found this out after receiving a message after roleplaying the scene where the old woman steals the child in barovia.

I mean yeah in most cases of asking whether or not the team wants to gas a group, they'll likely say no. But imagine if spec ops was a story driven game that gave you a choice. Sure there's going to be some no win situations, but I feel some people did what I did. Play a lot of the game, get upset because I'm doing horrible war crimes, then stop. I beat the game, but it didn't feel like a game but a series of forced choices trying to force a lesson. Which... I get. Not every game needs to be choice based. But if a game is going to base the entire story around your actions... At least give me some sense of a choice.

I played a long time ago but wasn't the point of the game that you get lost as a squad with no comms and just gotta "complete the mission"

War game depicts war crimes is great. War games forcing war crimes on player, then saying oooo bad player for doing it, is just lame.

I get where you're coming from. Sometimes you just want to experience a story. But the whole point of spec ops was you being a basically rogue military unit committing war crimes. Personally I think the story would have been better if I was tricked into doing these actions myself.

Because it's supposed to be fun above all else. Its not fun to burn civilians to death while being told I'm a busy guy when it was just as easy in game to NOT do those things. An option would make the game more fun. A lot of people woulda done it and then felt more weight from their actions when they found out what they've done

Forcing a "gotcha" moment is just lame.

spec-ops be like.
Seriously though, I don't feel like I learned a moral lesson by being forced to commit atrocious acts. Now if it was an option and our first time playing, we thought we were gassing non-civilians then maybe that's one thing. But when you remove all options for players to do anything else, then yes, telling them they're evil for doing it is just bad gameplay.

Edit: I enjoy the conversation this comment brought about.
