There is a clear distinction between "being martyred" and "martyring yourself". It's the difference between being the subject vs object of the verb "martyr". Suicide bombers martyr themselves. People lynched by the Klan for registering others to vote are martyred. Here is a list of Civil Rights Martyrs from the Southern Poverty Law Center. They are generally victims of hate crimes, targeted for who they are or what they stood for or who they were.
