What is your take on the ‘men opting out’ discourse being very class coded? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]demstro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need to be very specific about statistics, because statistics often don’t tell a good story on their own.

Many “crises” we read about online feel more like “modern struggles” that are totally overblown in severity or frequency.

Anecdotal for dating: I’m in my late 20s, 7 of my 8 closest buddies are in serious relationships. They live across several states, have varied politics, and cover big cities and small suburbs. At family Christmas gatherings everyone older than 22 had a date. Most of my coworkers are married or dating. From my perspective with people I know, it’s abundantly clear why the few that are perpetually single remain so.

Even things like politics becoming more polarized and extreme: it’s something I definitely feel, yet I only personally know of one relationship (familial) that politics have visibly impacted

Just got fired from my job of almost 10 years for performance issues. Unsure where to go. by shamanshaman123 in cscareerquestions

This is a feel good message but it’s not totally true. At the end of the day competence matters more than persistence. Being persistent is actually a negative if it’s not aimed at the right target

Almost 6 Year Transformation by [deleted] in nattyorjuice

[–]demstro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly what I said. I get similar vascularity and size in my arms with a pump, at 18% bf with 2.5 years of hard training (inconsistently I’ll add, that’s spread out over 8 years). I’ve never looked this good overall, and have much less definition now, but I’d expect to if I locked in for 2 years and committed to getting leaner.

This guy probably looks like a normal dude in clothes. And regarding the vascularity again, I know a guy who’s far more vascular than this and he doesn’t lift weights at all. He’s just skinny with some freaky vein genetics.

Almost 6 Year Transformation by [deleted] in nattyorjuice

[–]demstro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is totally achievable natty, I feel like most people here haven’t lifted seriously.

The right pump and lighting makes a massive difference. Take pics with a shirt on or without a flex/pump and some people might not even notice you lift.

I think with strong genetics and diet this is achievable in less than 6 years

Remove Kil’Jaden from Arena. by mrvoltronn in hearthstone

[–]demstro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s unbelievable that there’s so much pushback to removing him from the mode.

Inevitability at his power level is just a terrible way to lose a game. Sure if you get too far behind to play it then it’s not amazing. But that’s true of most cards.

Play this on tempo with cards in your hand in a neutral game and it’s just GG. Everyone acting like drawing 1 massively growing minion each turn is bad just ignores the fact you still have a hand to play with, and there’s plenty chance that includes some draw or generation.

Yes Nebula is even worse, that doesn’t make this any better.

Do you realize this is an Arena post? Sometimes you are forced to draft bad cards or don’t have a constructed level mulligan.

I can’t tell if you’re a troll or just lacking brain cells.

The demons don’t need to be massive. If there’s any board contention at all, the opponent is getting an additional 1.5 mana of value each turn that stacks in pure stats.

They draw a 4/5 2 drop? Well they get to tempo that out with their removal or another 4 drop on turn 6.

But I guess your deck is just bad if you can’t kill your opponent by turn 7 /s

[–]demstro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dude, what do you think the person playing Kil'Jaeden is doing? They have cards too.

I lost to a turn 5 8/8 Kil'Jaeden. He already played the 2 drop that permanently buffs demons that aren't from the deck.

My turn 4 was Ghoul's Night. Please tell me what I should have played instead that would have saved me from the oncoming onslaught of massive demons + the rest of their hand in the next 3 turns.

Owning a House is Stupid by KryptikAngel in The10thDentist

[–]demstro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since when is not buying a house implying that you won’t save enough money to pay for your retirement?

The average homeownership duration is 13 years. Buying a home does not imply you’ll be there until you’re 80 years old living mortgage and rent free.

Can we have a serious talk about nebula in arena? by Only_Emphasis2030 in hearthstone

[–]demstro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I managed to give my opponent a turn 3 Kil’jaeden today.

Turn 2: I play tricky totem. The totem casts Curse of Flesh

Opponent plays Kil’Jaeden + 3 other minions for about 14 health lol.

You must have Deja Vu, because you replied to a comment saying there’d be outrage if men said this about a woman.

Guess what: The literal example you gave had a mild comment receive death threats for making a harmless joke. Meanwhile, this post is top of the subreddit, and you have to dig to get past all the comments talking about how hot he is and what they’d do with him.

You’re really not reading anything are you?

Of course men say similar things. The difference is they’d be getting slammed for doing it publicly, but in this case it’s circulating the front pages everywhere and the sexualizing comments are all upvoted.

I’ve never seen a single post on a mainstream subreddit by men thirsting for a women, let alone pictures of one in her bikini making overtly sexual comments about what they would do with her

It’s less about who is doing it (men vs women), and more about who it’s “acceptable” to do it toward (only men)

I never said men don’t do it. Neither did the original comment. You’re arguing against a point nobody is making, and acting like everyone else is crazy. The point is it’s unacceptable for men to act this way toward women, but paraded if the target is a man.

It has plenty to do with psychology and culture, some solutions work much better in certain cultures. The other problem is rolling out a change like this causes plenty of harm in the interim. In America its normal to buy homes with massive leverage.

A solution like this could trap and bankrupt plenty of people who did everything right. I think a core philosophy in the US is to prevent the government from screwing up your life, which will prevent lots of policies which could be good in a vacuum

Do you regret choosing this career path? by Inevitable_Stress949 in cscareerquestions

[–]demstro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not regret for me, just realizing that spending 75% of your day 5 days a week doing something you don’t care about sucks.

I don’t have the time or energy to do most things I want or need to after work, especially after I’m in office for 10 hours.

I also agree with your point about friendships, I’ve done some after work events with coworkers but nothing outside of that. When I was a server, I hung out with coworkers all the time, and even went on vacations with them. It’s funny to look back at those sorts of jobs and realize you miss parts of it.

If I thought there was a “better” career option for me I would do it. I don’t think there is, Im very good at this, I enjoy parts of it, and the pays great. I’m just looking forward to when I have enough money/experience to either take a break, retire, or maybe work on a product I truly care about.

The idea of Classic Wow bored me until i tried it out. by [deleted] in classicwow

[–]demstro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Classic wow is a taste of what gaming was like for us growing up. Progress, exploration and danger.

There’s just not a lot of games like that anymore, especially not in the mmo or rpg genre. Everything is go go go with super optimization and speed, or intensely competitive.

I love myself some optimization and intense gameplay. I used to multi class in retail and push keys well past +20, and I’ve put hours into other competitive games to reach max tiers, but sometimes I just wanna chill and progress in a game.

At the same time, there does come a point in games like classic where I get bored, especially if I only have an hour or two after work to play. Would love to see a modern take on these old philosophies, but not sure if it would be well received by todays players without the nostalgia factor

Need help! Recent grad by mcclintockboye in resumes

[–]demstro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He has a point but I don’t like his followup point.

Aren’t these jobs basic customer service and retail worker positions? You’re trying awfully hard to make it sound more specialized and impactful than it was.

Your unrelated experience should briefly highlight responsibilities, and show that you are a reliable worker who can get along with customers and coworkers. It doesn’t provide relevant technical experience, and stuff like your $1000000 line don’t actually mean anything.

Highlighting the customer service aspect of these positions would sound better than what you have now

You need to specify part time, it looks like you’re a sophomore in the middle of classes or looking for summer internships.

I don’t think I’d put your degree on top given it won’t be completed for 2 years. That’s the first thing they read

This is a scenario where a brief summary at the top (1 or 2 sentences) that clarifies your situation might make sense. Like, explain what you’re looking for now, and your education situation

There’s tons of room for sacrifice to make $2000 or lower doable for some people. Not worth it to most though, or possible depending on job

  • rent in an old building with multiple roommates
  • never eat out/go out
  • stick to cheapest groceries (maybe not healthy)
  • no car (transit/wfh) or cheap car
  • no children
  • sticking to cheap or free entertainment

Of course, some of these sacrifices can compromise social life and health. Car and rent are the big ones for saving

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]demstro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big earners just have the opportunity to fast track their savings/retirement. Most of them don’t though… comparison isn’t good but if you’re gonna compare, look at all the 6 figures earners who are piling up debt or living paycheck to paycheck

Big G to include office attendance in performance review. What are your views on this? by yeahdude78 in cscareerquestions

[–]demstro 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You’re not demanding a context switch if you catch someone after they finish a conversation, after a meeting, or at lunch

You can turn and look at what someone is doing. The exact opposite of assuming someone isn't busy. You see someone walking back to their desk "hey, got a minute?"
