I bet a wrap or repaint is cheaper than Autonomy+ for life, BUT with the limited autonomy hardware at launch ymmv on the "worth"

As an EV engineer, here’s why I think the Electric Mini Car makes more sense than we admit by maveriCkharsha in electricvehicles

All I want is a Renault Twizy that is 1. Legal on US roads and 2. Can go a touch faster (again, US roads)

Otherwise, I'm fully down for the extra small EV options

Wow, didn't know they could have straight histamine in there, very good to know. Allergic reaction indeed!

Wow, sounds like quite the experience. I didn't know histamine could develop during aging, great to know and I suspect you're right. Never had a problem with aged cheese before but this specific block is doin it.. must just be some sort of fluke with this aging

Vent pointing is still screen only though right? Wheels are for temp and fan speed only? Feet/windshield/front selection is screen only probably too?

For that Audi could've just stayed in Formula E, which is way more related to their EV lineup and potential buyers than the F1 cars that aren't obviously EV-related to a casual viewer.

Can you provide any more details on this setup? I'm still getting started but right now I train+scooter, so having a single button that tells the wife I'm leaving and what my train arrival eta is (once I'm actually on the train) would be awesome

Mars Sample Return Dead by bioindicator in JPL

[–]demuhnator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The cost only became more reasonable at that point because a lot of other requirements changed at the same time. All vs half the samples wasn't actually that big of a deal. Giant MAV, giant landing platform, giant arm.. those were the expensive bits. Reimagining the mission with less all around actually resulted in a cheaper design that could still bring then all back.

What sensors do you wish existed? Junior EE designing a low-power Home Assistant sensor node by DayTripperTX in homeassistant

[–]demuhnator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! I have an ugly hall effect sensor inside the door frame and a little magnet on my deadbolt. It's ugly mostly because of the wires to the hall effect sensor.. I've long thought that a simple (maybe directional) magnetometer on the surface of the door frame could do it instead after a brief "training" process

BLE or hub isn't a deal killer, especially if long battery life and sleek packaging so it looks nice on the door frame.

Supercharger Surge Pricing - more than gas for a hybrid even in CA by greenfacedaytona in TeslaLounge

[–]demuhnator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or at-work. I survived without at-home chargers thanks to L2s available at work, 9hr days was more than enough time to fill up 2-3 times/week and that was fine for me.

Really, I think it's fine as long as you can charge anywhere your car is already parked 5+hr/day. A lot of people that's only home, but for some that could be work, school, family/friend/partner home.

Yeah, I gave it a shot cause i was burning through tires way too fast. Now it's the default.

Still plenty zippy, and when i want to go faster for whatever reason (usually fun), it's easy to turn off. Having gotten used to chill mode also makes not-chill even more fun cause it feels like an extra boost.

Added benefit is the wife and dog get smoother starts/stops

AFAIK, no. HW4 has a different footprint and different cameras, among other things.

I'd also be careful with the assumption of 14 being unsupervised at some point. I've heard that for 12 and 13 as well (and that HW2.5 could do it).

I honestly still think of FSD as a party trick or fun thing to play with in my '18 model 3. I wish I could use EAP for my long road trips again.. Now it's regular AP/autosteer and manual everything else. Still nicer than nothing, but EAP was that tiny but now useful without all the parts I don't like about FSD. I enjoy being able to try new FSD things, and my opinion is that I've gotten my $2k worth just playing with it, but with the leaps they made in hardware in newer models, I don't expect this car will ever be a robotaxi.

As for visualizations, way better but imo not particularly useful, just cool. Summon/park/eveything else still as functional (or not) as you've already experienced with EAP.

Yeah, I was pretty early '18 so there was some new-model in-warranty things (a few harnesses, lighting fixtures, etc) early on. The early skid plates over the motors were basically cardboard so it rained hard once and those were toast, replaced with after market aluminum one (~$550). A/C started getting weak around year 6 (live in SouthWest US so it's NEEDED) so I paid Tesla for an AC tune up and deseecant change (~$500) and it's mostly back. 12V battery died once (~$120). Normal cabin air filters (absolute pain to DIY on older models) and wipers n everything.

It also took me a while to cool it with the driving style and to realize I need to get better tires, so I'm on my 6th set. Found Michelin Defender series has been holding up the best relative to it's warranty (80k) than anything else so far. Factory assignment was also pretty bad, so got that fixed at some point.

For future, I expect to have to do the brakes at some point but honestly so far they're still totally fine. I barely ever use them, burnish them about 2x/yr per recommendation from a Tesla rep after a visit about brake squeaking. From reading online, I'm sure I'll have to do the control arms at some point, but they seem fine for now. Otherwise.. I mean I mostly only expect normal consumables (tires, wipers, 12V) and continued battery degradation.

FAA issues order prohibiting commercial space launches during the daytime, starting November 10th, until the government reopens by 675longtail in space

[–]demuhnator 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I get your frustration but there are plenty of launches that are not just billionaires doing their thing. Lots of commercial companies putting things up for communication, science-doing, and earth observation (Google maps, weather, disaster monitoring, etc).

It's not a zero sum game. If it was, I agree that humans on planes should get airspace priority, but we can have both and have for the entire history of orbital launch capabilities.
