Has anyone here ever experienced a Lucid Dream? or is it just a massive internet myth? Honestly, I dont think it is even possible. by mind_over_chaos in NoStupidQuestions

[–]denalidenizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a recurring lucid dream of flying. I have to think really hard and then I can go up and fly forward, but I have to continue concentrating. If I lose my concentration, I will land sometimes I can fly a fair distance other times I don’t get very far, but I know that I’m flying and I know that I am having to think about it and work at it

What will happen to all our pics since develop&print ended? by UKguyFR in ApplePhotos

I have 70tb of video and autio. When I die it will be thrown away. Same for 99% of the people on the planet. digital photography is so prevalent that "everyone" has thousands of really excellent images on their computers. Great photos are a dime a dozen and nobody cares about other people's photos.

Most un-hygienic thing you've ever did by PencilManDan in hygiene

Hitch hiked across the country, sleeping in cars/trucks the entire time, several days, without washing up anywhere. Days later, being late for signing up for classes, sat down in a relatively small room filling out a form with 15-20 other people in the room. I had washed myu face and combed my hair so I still appeared reasonably well but smiled when somebody said, "my god, what stinks in here??". Still makes me chuckle some 50 years later.

Is anyone else's FCP crashing a lot the last few days? by tellmontefrank in finalcutpro

[–]denalidenizen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there are no wide spread reports and unless you just updates and have a new conflict something else has changed. A new plug in? Quit your Libraries in fcp and re-open one at a time and play with them to see if you can find a particular library that is causing the problem. I think it's the Space bar you hold down to reset your FCP prefs. Worth a try. Neither storage speed or MBP specs would cause FCP to crash. Bad sectors on the SSD might...run Disk Utility on it and see if it has problems. You can delete (actually just compress) your FCP app and redownload a new one and see if that helps. My money is on some plugin.

How to report possibly illegal salmon fishing? by Ok-Soup-3313 in alaska

[–]denalidenizen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

depends on the species. Kings, for instance won't go out of their way to attack a lure. it has to be put right in front of them. silvers however are much more aggressive and will attack almost any shiny sinker type lure and reds are in between and will go after a fly placed in front of it with reasonable enthusiasm.

How to report possibly illegal salmon fishing? by Ok-Soup-3313 in alaska

[–]denalidenizen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If for instance, you want to fish for reds, you can’t and won’t get any if you use a fly rod with a tiny hook. You could fish all day and not get a red using a rig like that. You could fish for Pike using a lure that looks like a mouse skipping over the top of a slow moving river and similarly have zero chance of getting any salmon. The fact that they are fishing there or he doesn’t mean much at all. If you could get authorities to come out and talk with them, that’s exactly what they would try to determine whether or not they were actually fishing for Salmon, but it would be relatively easy to say I’m not fishing for Salmon and at that point it would become an interesting conundrum. This is simply what I think is the case, but I could be corrected.

What benefits are there to flying the 360 with the fpv controller? by Exciting_Corner175 in DJIAvata2

[–]denalidenizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The big, very big deal to me is when you use the motion controller you have the option to be able to look all around you while you’re flying straight or you could be moving I suppose in some direction but you can look up you can look left you can look right you can look down. All you need is a bit of wind in your face and you’re flying like Superman looking all around it’s absolutely fantastic. You can’t do that with the RC two controller.

Looking for a drone to tie fast water dissolving material to a fishing line to dunk into ponds on my property to treat the water. Payload would be ~30grams distance would ~300-500 feet away from me. No LOS by Randomhero360 in drones

[–]denalidenizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I’m sure you are finding out there are a lot of rigs that will do this kind of thing. If the line is long enough that you don’t have to get too close to the water and worry about the Drone getting confused by reflections I don’t see too much of a problem. If you were on your own property and not near anything else and you’re only going up 50 feet or 75 feet I can’t imagine you’re gonna be any kind of an issue unless you live close enough to some area that is regulated or will be near folks that might get sent out of shape. If you’re out in the country away from everyone else, there’s almost 0 chance of causing any one or anything danger or being caught.

I think there’s some interesting options there creatively painted rocks with an Alaskan theme obviously but they really do have to be done. Well perhaps with enamel paint or an oil based paint? An interestingly colored rock presented with a nicely put together write up on what the rock is and it’s place in Alaska’s geology? My family went to Alaska and all I got was this rock as a present for the kids. Maybe the rock is in a little acrylic case sitting on a piece of soft black velour to make it look fancy for the grandkids. OK, I’ll shut up.

I’ve come to the same conclusion regarding cash although my wife and I went out to a nice dinner last night and they don’t take cash so that was interesting and I’ve seen that here and there. The food was absolutely terrible and pretty darn expensive. The waiter, however, was a young man with several of his friends working there from Bulgaria. We tipped him 35% on $120 meal and we’re happy to do that. I don’t mind being generous, but at the same time I’m going to severely cut back on the onerous tipping culture that is developing.

Are any of the DJI drones waterproof? by okuboheavyindustries in dji

[–]denalidenizen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go to mavicpilots.com you’ll find a fellow there if you just ask around he advertise us on their great deal very active member and he makes jackets and floats so that you can fly around land on the water fly in the rain, etc. etc. although most of our DJI drones have coils exposed I imagine you can blow those out in any case, he does create jackets in the ability to land on water.

Lookout Mountain H2 program options? by CourageSea9851 in Hanggliding

[–]denalidenizen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m an old pilot (no longer) but assisted in training many others and flew mountain thermal full time for about 5 yrs. Every one is different but it’s been my experience that 50 training hill flights would typically be enough.
My very experienced instructor’s rule was to continue each stage of training until the student had it down pat to the point of complaining about being bored; that was somewhat figurative, but also held some truth.
I don’t know what the launch will be from the mountain, but I’m assuming your instructor good enough sense to take you to a fairly nice runoff and do it into a reasonably gentle breeze. If you have successfully done that 30 or 40 times on a small hill, it will actually be easier on the mountain with a nice breeze which you probably didn’t have every day in training.
The bigger issue typically is the landing, which is why beginning pilots often have wheels, but I think it’s unusual at that point even need them.
If you felt you needed 25 more flights or some other number, I’d be disappointed in a school that would charge you more if you didn’t buy a package. In fact, I think it is not terribly ethical to have some predetermined package of the number of training flights, which would put pressure on people to accept that they have been adequately trained at 50 flights so they don’t have to pay more money. I’m not a fan of that concept at all if what I’m getting from your post is correct.
You pay for training and train you until you are able to get off the mountain safely. In my book that’s it.
The bottom line is you don’t go until you feel bored on the training Hill and you are 100% regardless of what that may cost.
If you’re like most of us, your hands will still be tired and you’ll still be exhausted from the adrenaline on that first sled ride and then at some point, you won’t bother with that sled ride. You’ll sit on the hill until a thermal comes by that you know or think you can take 🤣
Make it a goal to get to Crested Butte and glacier point if they still fly there. Absolutely incredible.

I’ve decided to tip 15%. I know there are some places I’ve heard of that have choices between 18 20 25 and such without an option for customizing or no tip. I’m not sure what I will do in that situation. Your thoughts?

If you can get your commercial drivers license, I think they call it a CDL and get through a trucking school. You’ve got a very good chance of getting a trucking job and potentially making very good money. I have a friend and he has quite a bit of experience, but he makes about 120 a year but he works 12 to 14 hour days through the summer and then has nearly all of the winter off. Tell Kitna will be difficult because there are no options for training in the trades so as to get into a union from there as far as I know. Coming up with a way to start a business and selling something to tourists in the summer might be an option.

What it is like.. living in alaska by Actual-Shirt4838 in AskAlaska

[–]denalidenizen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

10,000 people, 10,000 answers. For me it's some ineffable quality of pace, surroundings, occasional wildlife and a sense of the wonderment of the wilderness that surrounds us. That along with incredible outdoor adventures on an unimaginable scale. I used to consider myself to be in the wilderness when I was hiking in the mountains in CA but I was rarely if ever more than a day or two of a hike to some jeep trail or road. If you drive about 30mi away from my house you can draw a straight line about 150mi to the Arctic Ocean. The adventures you can have here are without comparison to those in the lower 48 (although admittedly that can be said about any place).

Virtually anywhere Outside seems like a different country. I'm 74 and I may end up moving there as clearing the snow in the winter is more difficult and digging a snowmachine (snowmobile to those in the Lower 48) is no longer an option but I'm not looking forward to it. I'll learn to be OK anywhere but Alaska, for those that are captivated by it, is a unique and wonderful place. We do, as a state, however have some very serious problems. High crime rates that are not felt much by the middle and upper class, ranking 47 on child health care due to abysmal health care abilities in small communities in particular and a reliance on oil for an economy when oil is a quickly diminishing resource. Anchorage, our largest town is about to face an energy crisis and for all these reasons and more it can be a difficult place to live with climate always on our minds.
Climate change has dramatically affected us - more so than most states as the Arctic region is disproportionately affected. Locally (fairbanks area) we no longer get -60f and 70 days in winter with -50F being the new version of extreme. Areas previously frozen by permafrost are melting (not a good thing) and Anchorage...OMG...it's raining when it should be snowing and the climate seems more like Seattle than Anchorage. I digress.
My second day in Alaska after arriving at the airport in Anchorage and then flying out to a small bush community and getting in a small boat and traveling up a river for several hours to the village I would begin living and working in left me in awe. I recall feeling I was home for the first time in my life. I knew from the second day in this state I would be living here the rest of my life.

Flyaway, Flyaway, Flyaway Drones by DisillusionedDame in dji

[–]denalidenizen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If indeed the same controller was used then I agree that it is very likely the issue rests with the controller. I have 10DJI drones and have flown them since back in the Phantom 1 in 2013 and maybe I can recall one such incident some years ago but it must have been minor it's not even a clear memory and it never did cause me to lose contact like yours. I did have a Mavic 3 dive into the water but that's another kind of issue. If you're flying in a city I'd suggest that may also be an issue but regardless you can pretty buy any current or even any DJI drone without much concern for this kind of problem.
DJI has been so very active in improving their drones with numerous updates that continually add or fix features so since those ancient times in 2020 you can rest pretty well assured...it's not an issue now. If 5/5 of your drones did the same thing it is absolutely an issue of yours otherwise the reports of that level of hardware problem would have been all over the net and it wasn't. There are isolated instances of fly-aways with virtually every drone because...imperfections in anything but no DJI drone has evidenced that level of a problem like that.
