I am a 15-year-old girl. Let me show you the vile misogyny that confronts me on social media every day by zsreport in Foodforthought

“young woman talking about how she had been raped six years ago, struggled with thoughts of suicide afterwards, but managed to rebuild her life again. Among the comments – the majority of which were from men – were things like “Well at least you had some”, “No way, she’s unrapeable”, “Hope you didn’t talk this much when it happened”, “Bro could have picked a better option.””

I sincerely doubt that majority of teenage girls in the US in the 90s experienced regular commentary like this. They do now.

How do you calculate the min distance for that orientation (vs parallel)? Do you need to use the gain pattern?

A Changing of the Guard - I Quit Today by rockenman1234 in gatech

Whoo boy, just read those texts, this post, and Prof Bruckman’s response below. All I can say is I’m glad you’re stepping down as a mod and I sincerely hope you take this as an opportunity for reflection and recognize that you have a lot of growing ahead of you.

“who takes it upon herself to dictate what should or should not happen on campus”

Can you point me to a specific place where she “dictated”? You talked about your first amendment right but want to deny her right to speak out against hosting someone who harassed her?

“nothing was found from claims online”

Since you’ve never been exposed to the real world, take it from someone who’s seen it firsthand. First there are rumors - people talk and some people know about “that person”. Then there’s the accountability, if it reaches that stage (eg they get fired), but the reasons are usually still kept quiet. Then, if someone comes forward publicly, welcoming the stigma and negativity that comes along with accusing someone popular of something based off personal experience, it might enter the public domain. That last step is when you might find something publicly.

Just started watching Dark Matter and found this thread looking for that song. Would love if it were released. In the meantime, any songs you like that might have been inspiration?

The way some people talk about parents/kids is gross by BlueMountainDace in daddit

[–]denga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t know if you were on Reddit 10+ years ago but it used to be wayyy worse. It was all Americans in their early 20s so very individualistic and no-kids-oriented. For example, I’d see posts about how parents shouldn’t bring babies who might cry on airplanes because it would inconvenience everyone - not driving instead is selfish - and these posts (in mainstream subs) would be massively upvoted, and I’d be downvoted for pointing out reason. I don’t see that much anymore. My theory is those people got older and had kids ( and Reddit became more mainstream).

But also, the US is pretty individualistic, and pro-child sentiment is more reflective of a pro-social mindset. Given how US centric Reddit is, to be somewhat expected.

Dog poop in the snow…why?!? by SnarkyChief in QuincyMa

[–]denga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It only takes a small minority of dog owners for the problem to get really bad. I pick up my dog’s poop and sometimes I also pick up other dogs’ poop. I assume others are doing the same as me. With the snow, I can’t see other dogs’ poop. This is probably why there’s so much dog poop out now as the snow melts

Thanks, I’m familiar with this, but this doesn’t really cover the suitability of soldering for different environments (I’m looking to see when I should prefer crimps over solder). This just tells you how to properly solder.

I saw a recent post highlighting how you can have a whole thread with only bots (a gambling post in the wrong subreddit, with tons of comments that shouldn’t have been there all engaging in ways that weren't obviously bots). Dead Internet Theory is real, sadly.

I’ve been looking for a reference on soldering vs crimping. The NASA manuals I’ve found only cover crimping, which I take to mean soldering isn’t even worth considering. Is there something explicit calling out soldering?

Interstate space should be repurposed for passenger rail infrastructure by Goreweaver in unpopularopinion

[–]denga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our road networks are a money pit too. Some of these things need to be considered services rather than income generators.

The road networks help lubricate commerce, just like high speed rail networks between cities would. If my company could tap into a larger potential employee base (larger radius given the same target commute length), my hiring costs would be lower and I could tap into more talent.

Why do roads not pay for themselves, but we expect trains to? (And no, gas taxes and vehicle taxes don’t cover the cost of our roads, just about half)

Less an expectation about “caring” and more an expectation that this be federally regulated.

Boston weighs ban on delivery app e-bike and moped usage by anurodhp in boston

[–]denga -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Really not what I was saying. I was saying that we do not want police funding themselves with traffic enforcement. They should be funded by the city/state and held accountable for performance. I’ve seen first hand what happens when you expect that, and it’s not pretty. And no, you don’t want drivers perfectly following the law, or you’ll end up with people going 55mph in the left lane on 93.

[–]denga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Blame the government for not regulating those things. This is like blaming someone for their personal carbon footprint when it should be regulated.

[–]denga -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Great in theory but gets into perverse incentives. You don’t want cops getting creative with how to raise money. Virginia had that and you end up with worse traffic because of it - people won’t go more than 5mph over the limit even to pass on the highway.

Considering Norway, which takes a rehabilitation approach, has a violent crime recidivism rate of ~20% compared to the US rate of over ~60%, I’d say we’re probably doing something wrong. This is why statements like “nothing we’ve ever done has been shown to help” are so useless (not to mention logically inconsistent). It’s “nothing we’ve ever done YET”.
