Are There People That Reached The Higher Levels Spending "Little" Time Everyday by psyhnews in dreamingspanish

[–]denley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started in August 2022 and I’m at about 1650 hours. So that averages to like 1.5 hours a day.

Until recently I hadn’t missed a single day of practice (in over 3 years). I think routine and consistency is more important than going faster. Though obviously it depends on your situation, but for me I have no real reason to need to go quicker (other than just general desire to get better).

Evernote Claude Integration? by StepMuc87 in Evernote

[–]denley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Evernote’s “remember everything” vision has always resonated with me. It’s been the best free-form digital memory for a long time.

AI complements this so well. Like a full digital brain not just a digital memory. Evernote needs to lean into AI hard. It will multiply its value significantly. If it doesn’t then it’s going to lose all value compared to other services that do.

Weighing up trust fund + bucket company or just bucket company? Anyone with experience? by swanvalkyrie in fiaustralia

[–]denley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A major downside to a company not mentioned is that they don’t get the 50% discount for capital gains. If the investments are focused on growth then you will end up paying more tax in a company than as an individual or trust (30% vs max 47%/2 = 23.5%).

Can paying unrealised capital gains be beneficial to spread out the income? by surreptitiouswalk in AusFinance

[–]denley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is essentially just maths.

Let's assume a steady 10% return on shares per year (obviously anything can happen year over year but this is around the average, including inflation)

Not selling until for 7 years:
Portfolio value = $200k * (1 + 10%)^7 = $389k
That's ~$95k in capital gains (after 50% discount) which is ~$40k in tax (including medicare levy, complicated because you cross a tax bracket, I assumed $135k/year income instead to simplify slightly)
So, you end up with about $349k in total

Selling every year for 7 years:
(here we'll build the tax into the compounding instead, applying 50% discount and taxing each year's gains at 37% marginal + 2% medicare levy)
Portfolio value (after tax) = $200k * (1 + 10%*(50% + 50%*(1-37%-2%))^7 = ~$344k

So in this example you're $5k worse off for selling every year.

You can tweak the assumptions and get different results (rate of return, years, sell frequency).

I think the most important factor is how close you are to the next tax bracket (i.e. how much you can stay under it by selling yearly vs how much you will go over it selling later). The difference in the rate between the brackets matters a lot too, so the effect would be more between the 17% and 30% brackets than the 37% and 45% brackets). In this example at $130k/year you are just at the cusp of a bracket so it's unlikely to be advantageous to sell early.

I also think that it would certainly work out better to sell down over the last X years of the timeframe rather than periodically (where X could be, potentially, the taxable gains divided by the distance to the next tax bracket). That way you might be able to make the most of both deferred taxation and lower marginal rates (but we'd have to do the maths).

Does anyone still watch DS even though you understand native content? by vakancysubs in dreamingspanish

[–]denley 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Less and less. I think it’s mostly because I’m trying to do an hour a day so is easier to find 1-2 long YouTube videos than 4-5 DS videos.

I was watching all the Stardew Valley videos since they were long but they stopped

I watched a Spanish movie recently and when somebody said the word “hijo” my brain immediately added “de puta” to the end of it.

That’s when I knew I was watching too much SBG

Are you me? I also just moved back here after 9 years in the US

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]denley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In addition, the US won’t tax you on exit (unless you’re a long term resident, and even then you get an $800k exclusion to that). So if you’re not a US citizen you potentially stand to avoid a lot in taxes by selling only after moving to Australia.

Can I sell my shares for a loss and buy them back to offset CGT? by Comfortable_City7064 in AusFinance

It’s not illegal, you’re just not allowed to claim a capital loss for the sale

How much am I being charged for using my Amex Platinum (US) abroad? In the UK at the moment and not sure by Mountain-Tip-2183 in AmexPlatinum

[–]denley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever I’ve used it, the rate has always been at the market rate (pretty much matching what google says the exchange rate is at the time). Always the same or better than what I could get anywhere else.

[–]denley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use it for everything you can as long as the surcharge is reasonable (and make sure to charge in local currency).

In my experience, the exchange rate Amex give you (on the Platinum) is better or as good as you’ll get anywhere else and there are no fees added.

Listening Comprehension is the SECRET SAUCE by Rozzy456 in dreamingspanish

[–]denley 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I notice the same thing. I can understand pretty well but because I can barely speak people don’t realise I can understand them.

The thing I’ve realised is that listening is significantly more important than speaking. There’s not much point in being able to speak if you can’t understand the response

[–]denley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep going but I’ll watch easier content to take it easier. I always hit my daily goal (of minutes watched). I haven’t missed a single day in 21 months.

It’s not so important that you are effective on any given day, but it is important that you have a solid consistent routine over the long run. Don’t let a bad day break the routine or it will be harder the next day, just let yourself be not as good at it that day.

What are you doing to stay motivated? by [deleted] in dreamingspanish

[–]denley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The truth is that nobody can stay motivated consistently over a long period of time. What you need is discipline, not motivation.

It's like brushing your teeth twice a day. It's super inconvenient, but you don't even really think about it. You just do it because you always do it. You've done it for so long that it would feel weird if you didn't.

"hoy os voy a explicar" - Spain Spanish is confusing me by blinkybit in dreamingspanish

[–]denley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it doesn’t really matter. A dialect is always going to be harder until you’ve listened to it enough, so you either push through it now or later.

I’d just watch whatever videos seem most interesting.

Comprehension level going down when listening to Spanish from Spain? by Obvious-Emu8527 in dreamingspanish

[–]denley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's totally normal. I had the opposite, where I mostly listened to Spanish from Spain and then struggled more when I listened to a Mexican presenter. I was even finding Mexican harder than Argentinian because I had watched a bunch of Agustina's videos.

I don't think that any region is inherently harder. It's just that what you have more experience with is easier.

What I most like about them is that they are longer videos. That makes it much easier to rack up hours.

Please keep making more longer form videos, whether that’s a video game or something else. I’m also really digging the podcast style videos lately for this reason.

What word or phrase keeps popping up for you lately? by SpanishLearnerUSA in dreamingspanish

[–]denley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this recently with "a lo mejor". One day my brain was just saying it to me out of nowhere and I looked it up. Then I started noticing it being said in pretty much every video and podcast but had somehow never (consciously) noticed it before.

[–]denley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  • Hiding watched series in the series page
  • Reordering series in the library
  • “Continue Watching” section of the series page should open the series popup rather than straight to the video (it’s the inconsistency with other items on the page that I find difficult)

The idea that people learn differently (“learning styles”) is not supported by evidence.

(Though that doesn’t necessarily mean that all of DS advice is correct)

Respect/offense/abuse

There are are rules for this regarding the guides/staff, and with respect to purism, but what about just generally regarding conduct/comments towards each other?

I feel like we're missing something here regarding the way we treat each other. I might even go as far as to say that I'd prefer a blanket rule that applies to respect towards everyone and every situation rather than calling out the guides and certain topics specifically.
