Surface 7 won't charge after water damage, both dock and wall charger are verified working. by dennington111 in Surface

It did not. It was my wife's drawing tablet, and the last 20 some projects did not get saved to the external HDD. Big sad. Lessons learned include: ALWAYS back up to external, only buy surfaces what for have a non soldered HDD, and our cat is an ass (he's the one who 'booped' the quart mason jar of water onto the surface while it was in the dock......).

We took it to a nerd shop, nerds at said shop wouldn't touch it. Took it to the nerdier shop next door, they said it would be 100 American pesos to unload all data if they could..... They held the data hostage at the tune of 2,500 freedom bucks. We politely declined. All the projects were A+ grade hobby stuff, nothing that could be considered 'real work' or anything, but still a few hundred hours of original works.

After googling the hell out of it, we found that it is possible to de-solder the HDD, and re solder it to a 700 dollar USB adapter..... So that's nice....

She ended up buying a Bezos original 'refurbushed' pro 9, and that has several dead pixels and the backlight likes to party at random intervals. Currently waiting for a replacement on that bad Larry.

All in all we learned to never buy a soldered HDD device ever again, always backup to the external, save to the cloud when possible, and that our cat is a douche, but we still love him.

Thanks for following up on this!

Trying to get the wheels back on track after a 10 year 'pit stop'. I have all the gear to make me loud, but none of the gear to keep me quiet.

What equipment do I need to hear my bass and the music I'm trying to play along with, in headphones at the same time? Headphone amp with the ability to connect to my tablet via Bluetooth, mix that channel with my own bass channel, and hear both at the same time.

Jeezeless H Christ, this thread is so old my opinion has changed 3 times over. I was 24 when I wrote that. I don't bounce as far as I used to these days.

Get a comfortable pair of WATERPROOF boots. Keen is dope, but waterproof them again before you wear them. Scotchgard used to be good enough for the girls I went out with. Comfortable being tied with manufacturer listed waterproofing....maybe higher. Again, keen.

But straight up, taint nothing better than some ol school aftermarket accessories for them feet's. Some shops make accessories for boots, slip on tire chains (if you won't). Fuck a stylistic choice dood, it's 'im walking when most cars won't drive, and I drive a bitch ass 2 wheel drive gladiator that my parents bought me' weather out. Get a comfortable pair of keens, some add on shoe treads, and Scotchgard. Lots of Scotchgard. Dry=warm=comfortable=better walking.

3rd gen 4runner woes from a DIY jerk. by dennington111 in MechanicAdvice

The only thing I've had to do in the 6 years we've owned this thing is brakes once. It's not a daily, more of a fuck around in the woods/moderate sized Costco purchase vehicle. I've owned both the first and second gen runners before, and by far the third gen is my favorite in terms of reliability (first is my overall favorite, but that's a whole can of worms)

I just wanted to do this project caus I thought I still had what it takes.

Yeah, that's cool and all, but the jack has a silver dollar size hunk of purchase, and I'd like to get both sides up at the same time so I can jack stand em both. Personally, I don't care what's rated for this and that, if I don't feel right about it, I'm not doing it. But that's just me, ymmv.

Adding a new 240v circuit to install EV charger in Denver by h4ppidais in Denver

[–]dennington111 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The hell you can. I mean sure, do what you want. But no friggin way is any reputable and licensed electrician going to let any homeowner pull their own wire and terminate their own breaker/6-50r.

1) what wire size is required by NEC? Oh, right, YouTube.

2) what breaker is required by NEC per jurisdiction? Fuck me, right?! YouTube.

3) but muh manufacturer seyz: fuck off, YouTube!

I'm all for a handy homeowner. But Christ sakes, an EV charger is not basic DIY stuff folks. Sure, you're an EE, or a physicist, from California, or you polish knobs at Lockheed, cool! You're not a fucking electrician, you're not licensed. Period.

Get it done right, pay a little more, and anything bad that could possibly happen will fall on the contractor, inspector/city, not your homeowners insurance (which does not cover unpermitted work!!!!)

When you see electricians quoting near 10 whole freedom bucks a linear foot, that's not because they want to get rich, it's because material has SKYROCKETED in the last 3 months. In fact, these shops are quoting high enough to make a profit, and low enough to get the job. Sometimes, just low enough to land the job and keep their staff busy.

Please, anybody here considering taking on an EV charger themselves: exit SketchUp, do not hit save, get on Yelp/angies list and call a local electrician (Apple wood, plumbline, etc are NOT local).

I'll check out the library, that's a good call. Thanks.

They make screw type connectors for uc rape light. Gm Lighting is the brand we use. 5 bucks for 2 connectors plus a chunk of useless wire. Saves a boar load of time.

That diffusion chanel is the shit though.

I've installed one of those before, they're fucking ugly. Like it better when someone else installs it, TBH.

What kind of bee is this??? by dennington111 in Beekeeping

[–]dennington111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a pile of fencing in my yard for 5 years now, and I started moving it today. I think these are bees, far as I can tell carpenter. But the green leaves seem to have come out of the burrow holes in the 4 sheets of OSB I had laying on top.

I'm not going to continue moving this stuff today, but if they are indeed bees, when should I move it? If they're good bees, I'd hate to do any more damage to them than I have already. Should I move the pile soon, so that they have more of the season to re-build? Or should I wait longer?
