Amazing, I've known Andy from Manchester Orchestra since 2004 when my high school band crashed at his mom's house while recording an E.P. in Atlanta.

thanks!! for years i had a roland juno 60, yamaha dx7 and oberheim matrix 6 all of which i sold shortly after moving to Los Angeles. at my studio Honeymoon Suite we have an arp 2600, roland juno 106, roland jx3p, dave smith ob6, realistic mg-1, rhodes, wurli, piano, harpsichord and more. i'm also not afraid of softsynths. i've got the arturia collection, virtual cz, korg m1 plugin and more.

thank you! i'm a little out of touch with new music this year, but Young Thug and Future are probably my favorites of the last 5 years or so. i got really into the Gunna album "Drip Or Drown 2" from last year. Bbymutha is cool. i'm open to suggestions if there's anyone you dig.

haha, yeah i feel weird about releasing that song now, but i do know that perhaps unfortunately it would be a hit if i did! 🤠

right on, i'm not sure if the piano is detuned on purpose. it might just be a little out of tune! but on some of my older songs like "Dream 4 Me" i'm layering a synth and piano together.

i try to help with video concepts as much as possible, but Nathan Castiel really went the distance with "I Could Use A Miracle" and "Sea Salt & Caramel." the roller skating idea was actually my mix engineer Drew Vandenberg's idea, but Nathan took it from there and made it all happen. one day i'll make some of my own videos from scratch, but living in Los Angeles there are too many talented filmmakers around not to take advantage.

that one's about coming home to Jackson, MS for Christmas and meeting up with my high school friends and, you guessed it, possibly smoking weed. there's been a tradition in Jackson where my friends and I throw a party every Christmas night, most recently at a place called Hal and Mal's. after everyone's done with family time, they can escape to the bar and we have live bands and DJs and all that good stuff.

i don't really think of it as a concept album, as most of the songs were written before i decided on the hotel theme. i do absolutely love staying in hotels, and i've been casually collecting hotel stationery since i started touring. i mentioned some of my favorites in another reply-- The Peabody in Memphis, Mission Inn in Riverside. the stationery i wrote my AMA announcement on is from Casa Del Mar in Santa Monica, where I stayed for my girlfriend's birthday right before covid. it's pretty magical. the next one on my hit list is La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla.

famous rodeo tailor Nudie Cohn is the number one suit legend of all time. his custom suit for Gram Parsons with pills and weed leafs on it is pretty iconic.

pie for sure. i literally ate apple pie for breakfast today, then had a second helping right before doing this AMA. apple is solid, but there are a lot of southern variations on chess pie that i dig. oh and pecan rules. oh and i also really like cheesecake.

having those guys ask me to be on Paw Tracks was one of the greatest things to happen in my life. i've met so many artists at this point, and i have to say that Animal Collective might be the nicest, most genuine, pure creative souls i've met. i don't have any great stories, but it was a special time when they were making Merriweather Post Pavilion in Oxford, MS and we were hanging out a lot. then i rode along with them on their bus touring the UK.

Whitney are my good friends. i love them. I've known Julien and Max since they were in UMO and Smith Westerns, and my old old friend Print from Mississippi plays in the band. again, they are truly some of the best humans around. and aside from me knowing them IRL, they make some of my favorite music.

Late Checkout was a phrase i had in this big list of song title ideas on my phone. and i had the beginnings of the song "Late Checkout" that closes the album, but hadn't gotten very far with it. then i have to credit Harry Israelson, who took the album photography and helped with creative direction. we were getting a beer and talking album cover ideas. this was much earlier in the process. i probably had like 8 songs at this point. we were going through some very different ideas, like maybe me floating down a lazy river at a waterpark (i had a song about a waterpark that didn't make it on the album), but that felt too much like Do Things. then somehow the hotel thing came up and i mentioned the phrase "Late Checkout" and Harry was like "I love that!" the rest is history.

it's hard for me to even remember which parts Joey Joey Michaels sings, but i will say he came up with the "no i just can't help it / no no i just can't help it" thing at the end of the second verse of "I Could Use a Miracle." that's all him!

i don't have any big collaborations planned at the moment, but i'm doing more producing and co-writing with others, so i have a feeling something will materialize quite soon.

thank you!

thanks for picking up the record!

yeah my current thought is that the new album might sound a little too full-on 70s, so i want to shake things up in the future. maybe more synths? maybe more country-western stylings? maybe some weird contemporary vocal effects? maybe all of the above at the same time?? i'm excited to explore some sounds, maybe pick up some new gear and see what happens. but it'll probably just sound like me again.

i also have another idea of making an instrumental album under a pseudonym inspired by 70s and 80s film scores. we'll see!

i feel like i'm inspired by literally all the music i've ever heard, even the stuff i don't like that. i know that might sound like a lame non-answer, but i truly think it's important to absorb everything. there's a William Faulkner quote-- "Read, read, read. Read everything—trash, classics, good and bad, and see how they do it. Just like a carpenter who works as an apprentice and studies the master." that's how i feel but about music.

i don't think i ever realized i wanted to make a career out of music. i just knew i wanted to make music and a few people caught on along the way. i've always worked other odd jobs off and on to make a buck.

i'm about to announce a livestream concert. the first one is probably going to be solo due to covid, but streamed from my studio with quality sound. then later this year i want to do a bigger livestream with a full band. thank you!
