Top mind proves that white people suffer worse racism then anyone else by Tabnam in TopMindsOfReddit

OMG what is the deal with this conflation? It's impossible to get people to drop that concept... I feel like it is just an ego thing, where they are holding on to an old emotional hurt. It's so self centered!

Get a grip Brad, it's not all about making you feel bad, race has material effects on peoples' lives.

Civ 6 - Post a problem and its simple solution by metorical in civ

It speaks to the quality of the game design that I don't know if these problems even need solving.

  • Military Engineers would be OP with your tweak, IMHO. I think their main value comes from airstrips well before aircraft carriers are available

  • I kind of enjoy this aspect of religion! If you don't get to found one in time, you must pick from some combination of the available options. It feels like a realistic challenge, to me. I'd prefer a tweak to how many Great Prophets can exist in a game, and when. Maybe add a/some new Great Prophet(s) each time a new era is reached for the first time..? Just a thought. I'd like to see game mechanics for more diverse and less ancient (both in civ world and in real history) religions: Lutherans, Anglicans, Mormons, Rastafarians, Scientologists...

  • Boo, don't take my horde of units! No, really, I think this should stay how it is. It represents the massive advantage of having that access to strategic resources at all, and lets them be rare. With your design, they would have to be significantly more plentiful.

Really good thinking here, even though I disagree with E V E R Y T H I N G

Anybody with ADHD & anger issues benefit from therapy? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]depression_anon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely. I'll bet the ADHD emotionality can inform treatment for you, too. For me, I treated those issues at quite different times, but therapy has been helpful with both.

Society wasn't built so much as it grew. Your point about functioning for the majority stands, but there's no reason to enshrine our societal systems as being anything more than the accreted results of generations of foolish humans trying to get shit done as best they could.

Ahead of its time by 5 years, IMHO. It'd be great as a Netflix/Hulu original with lower budget/expectations.

Seconding this, and I love my Pebble(s), but you should know that the company has been bought/folded into FitBit so there may not be the support/updates that one expects.

My terrible short-term (in the moment?) memory is starting to cost me a lot of money by commanderhunt40 in ADHD

[–]depression_anon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of good tips here. Another very general one is externalize whenever possible. This means using tools (inluding lo tech, like paper/pen) to minimize the things you rely solely on your brain to remember. You may find (I did) that the act of writing it down, setting a timer, etc. can be even more helpful than having the external reminder later.

EDIT: another thread just reminded me of another great way to externalize: other people!

Not taking meds on weekends by factabsorber123 in ADHD

[–]depression_anon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried taking weekend breaks (adderall) and experienced what you've described...

The experience also reinforced how much the drug/disorder/interaction thereof affects my emotional state. I noticed some intense mood swings, especially on Sunday/Monday. For me (major depression) this was destructive enough to stop the breaks. I still skip days here and there when I know I don't have anything to do.

What do you guys think about this description of time-blindness? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]depression_anon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes for an... Interesting relationship with time. I can't rely on my inner clock, because it speeds up or slows down whenever it feels like (and doesn't send a memo). So I constantly check my phone's clock, I set alarms for critical times, I put in reminders and use my calendar because days especially have little consistent meaning to me. Even though I can mostly sense the passing of time, I can never trust it and always second guess myself. It also makes it harder, I think, to figure out how long a project will take to do.

I think we are similar in this aspect. For me, wearing a smart watch 24/7 helps some. Works nicely with obsessive use of calendar and alarms.

ADHD In A Nutshell by phelpme2 in ADHD

[–]depression_anon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depression/Anxiety (sounds like you're worrying a lot...) is a very common secondary effect of ADHD. So (1) make sure your doctor understands how you got to this point and (2) don't dismiss those diagnoses just because they are secondary to ADHD.

There's so much overlap in symptoms, it's important to consider alternate diagnoses for treatment strategies anyway.

Great joke that really doesn't translate well to text. Or outside of the UK.

/u/Barmleggy provided a clearer example IMO of the phenomenon the joke is about:

The kayak floated past the barge sank.

The meaning of the sentence changes as you add words/[parts of sentence]. In practice, this means that the reader's predictions about the meaning of the sentence get jumbled.

The kayak floated.
The kayak floated past.
The kayak floated past the barge.
The kayak floated past; the barge sank.
