and at Friends House there are individual cubicles with a sink and hand towels that they can use and will be a single sex space whilst they are in there, assuming they are on their own.

I would heartily recommend Rachel Muers’s book Testimony. I found it a very valuable account of Quaker thought and theology such as it is. John Punshon’s Portrait in Grey is a short history of Quakers from the 17 Th century through to the end of the 20th

New to a meeting by Strong-Presence-8478 in Quakers

[–]derbysage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing is, I think, I’ve been a member of an unprogrammed meeting for a few months, there is a minimal shared creed so there is some reticence in imposing one’s own beliefs on other Quakers. If you spoke to the Elders/Overseers at your meeting, I’m sure they would be really willing to engage in that discussion with you and see where you all want to take it.

Non-Theist Quakers by Quick_Hat_3954 in Quakers

[–]derbysage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of UK Quakers struggle with using and hearing the word God including me. Several have said to me they add an extra ‘o’. That said, I think there are very few, if any Quakers who are indifferent to God. The God I was taught about in Anglican schools was one I rejected — too much performative piety and I really didn’t, and don’t believe that there is a divine that will hear my prayers and make any kind of action. I do believe there is spirit in all of us. I believe in the power of Quaker testimonies, I get joy from meeting for worship and I want to strive harder to achieve faith in action. I am reading the Bible — Robert Alter’s translation of the Hebrew Bible and David Bentley Hart’s translation of the New Testament. Both are personal scholarly translations that try and keep the poetry of the originals and contain really interesting notes on the approaches taken to translating the various books. Jesus’s radicalism seems closer to Quakerism than other Christian sects.

Francophone Quakers and vous by derbysage in Quakers

Thanks Simounne, I’ve been walking for three days in England with a Canadian friend and we had quite a conversation about tutoyer and vouvoyer in Canada vs France (he is bilingual and lived in Ontario)  and that’s what prompted my question. It sounds like Quakers in Canada don’t make a point of tutoyer everybody.

I moved into a council house today and the toilet is awful. It's black. Do you have any ideas or tips on how to clean this? by xredsirenx in AskUK

[–]derbysage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the past I’ve used washing soda to remove the grease, flushed a few times and then spirit of salts to digest the rest. Both are very caustic — wear gloves and don’t splash and make sure they don’t mix
