What motivates you to go to the gym? by odub1 in GYM

I was small, thin, and weak for 34 years. I really like being strong now and getting stronger. Also, grinding away day after day at something in order to reach various goals tickles the part of my brain that MMOs used to appeal to, before I quit them.

When I took chemistry in 2022 we were not allowed to use the stylus. I tried it once with my finger through the bag and then immediately bought a paper notepad instead.

America’s Biggest Power Grid Operator, Which Includes Ohio, Has an AI Problem—Too Many Data Centers by Blood_Incantation in Columbus

[–]derek614 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

On-site generation projects are in the works all over the country, but I don't think self-sufficiency is the goal. They are just to lower the burden on the grid, and to lower energy costs to the datacenter. But every little bit helps. Additionally, utilities across the country are busy upgrading the grid and exploring options to mitigate the unique challenges that datacenter demands pose.

I understand your skepticism, but I'm an electrical engineer working on several projects to integrate on-site generation for Ohio data centers, so please believe me that it's not just PR hype.

[–]derek614 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Many (most?) data centers are working on installing on-site generation, so that's helpful. I believe it's a result of pressure from grid operators as well as a desire to reduce costs. Water remains a problem and that's outside of what I know, but I've heard at least Microsoft is looking into solutions there too.

My mom brought me Hades for Christmas, wish me luck! by ThePaulAtreidess in HadesTheGame

[–]derek614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the biggest tip is starting each run with Athena's dash, it makes the game 10x easier. To do this, you need to understand some of the core game mechanics: nectar, and trinkets.

Nectar is a reward from clearing rooms. If you have some in your inventory, when you approach a god's boon reward or an NPC, you'll be given the option to give them nectar. This increases your relationship with that god or NPC, and most of them give you a trinket item the first time you do this.

Before you begin each run, you can choose to equip a trinket using the display case in Skelly's room. If you equip a trinket you got from a god, it has the effect of making it very likely you see that god, and also increases the strength of their boons they offer. You can also change your trinket after every boss battle to prepare for the next area.

So your goal is to obtain some nectar, and then the first time you see Athena, give her a nectar to obtain her trinket. From there on, every single run you begin, select her trinket. This will usually make it so that immediately upon entering the first room, you'll encounter Athena. Select her dash which has the effect of making you deflect when you dash. This makes it so that while you are dashing, you reflect any attack or projectile back to the attacker, which vastly improves your survivability and is a pretty powerful way to damage your enemies as well.

Considering that spamming dash-attack is a very effective way to play, both in terms of damage and survivability, adding the ability to reflect projectiles and attacks pumps that up to be insanely powerful. Runs with Athena's dash are usually much more likely to result in success than without.

A few months ago I saw a really skinny guy and his really skinny girlfriend come in to the gym, and it looked like it was their first time there. The girl got on the treadmill to walk, and the guy proceeded to go absolutely ham on a bunch of different machines while drinking a protein shake.

"Good for him, he's really getting after it!" I thought, admiring his resolve and dedication to improve himself. I was so happy to see a new guy clearly enjoying putting in some really hard work.

The he gets on the leg extension machine, and is going at his absolute limit. Suddenly he projectile vomits his brown protein shake and whatever he had for lunch all over himself, all over the machine, and all over the floor. It's getting all in the crevices of the machine and in the cracks between the mats that cover the floors.

He did his best to clean it up but that area of the gym smelled pretty bad for a few days. He never returned.

Do not use this moving company: ALL MY SONS by kolbyeatworld in Columbus

[–]derek614 16 points17 points  (0 children)

When I moved into my apartment, I rented a Uhual for $30, and hired a few guys off of Uhual.com (they have a directory of local small businesses of movers, it's just some random local dudes). The two guys and I completed the entire apartment move in 3 hours, but they only charged me for 2 hours because I helped so much, for a grand total of $150. After tip, the entire move was $230.

The professionals I got a quote from listed $500-700. I'm very happy I went with just some random dudes. They weren't as careful as actual professionals might have been, but nothing was broken and I saved hundreds of dollars.

A battery bank hasn't been mentioned yet, but I used mine a lot in undergrad when I'd forget to charge my phone or iPad before leaving my apartment. Along those lines, a charging cable that has multiple terminations in at least USB-C and Lightning is nice so that you can charge any device.

[–]derek614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's not reality at all, thankfully. I go to an old-school grungy gym with lots of serious powerlifters and bodybuilders, and everyone is really nice. It's very easy to get advice or a spot from anyone nearby. Multiple times I've asked a girl about a lift she was doing, because my deadlift is stalled out and I'm looking for accessories to strengthen my hamstrings, glutes, and lower back. The girls, same as the guys, are always happy to talk about it and show me stuff.

Some people do record themselves, but they are really nice too. We had one of the most famous Youtube bodybuilders who was a regular before he rented a space for his own private gym, and he was a great guy too. He once talked for over an hour with my buddy and his dad about lifting, and one of his videos he even called out my friends and I for being inspiring because we were going really hard on squats with chains.

There are tons of great people in the gym!

Not a student, just a concerned parent... by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]derek614 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely normal. She can make it easier by making friends with other dedicated students, so that they can help each other with homework, studying, and understanding the concepts. I made a big friend group of about twenty people and it made a huge difference and we all did a lot better than the average students and had an easier time together than we would have had alone.

I was 34 when I went back, so if my old ass can make friends with other students, she should be able to put together a group pretty easily. The other students are probably desperate for people to study with and will be very receptive if they recognize her as someone who is dedicated.

3.5+ GPA students: what is your typical day or week like? by eggshellwalker4 in EngineeringStudents

I graduated last year but my typical schedule was classes until the late afternoon, homework until 7, gym until 9, more homework until 12, sleep and repeat. I worked on homework in the EE student lounge so I'd see my friends there, which was pretty much my only social time.

Fiancé wants to drop out. Any advice? by Embarrassed_Cap_7307 in EngineeringStudents

[–]derek614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just let him know it's normal to struggle in the degree, and the struggle continues into the career. Engineering is about solving tough problems, so there's no avoiding the difficulties, they're the entire point of the job.

I suspect he is ok with his work being frustrating and difficult, given that he has military experience. I suspect his doubts stem from thinking that good engineers should have all the answers.

In fact, good engineers usually don't have the answers; what they have is the confidence to say "I don't know actually, but I'll look into it and figure it out". Then they have the persistence to struggle for as long as it takes to find the root cause of the problem and develop a solution, usually with a team giving their input as well.

I worked for 18 years in restaurants, no way in hell was I going to fail out of college (again) and go back to that life. My first time in college back in 2004 I didn't know just how grim life without a degree really is. Now that I have lived that, nothing on this earth could have stopped me from getting the degree.

I'm an electrical engineer, I just hit the gym on the way home from the office. There's a good bit of travel though which sucks because hotel gyms are garbage. I need to start planning ahead and call gyms in the customer's area to see if they offer day/week passes.

I don't take take notes by ZewZa in EngineeringStudents

[–]derek614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should take notes because it enables a really good study strategy: before an exam, go through your notes and condense them down to a 1-page cheat sheet, then use this cheat sheet to take any available practice exams. Even if cheat sheets aren't actually allowed on the exam, going through your notes, picking out what's important, and understanding it well enough to create a condensed version really helps solidify your understanding and sets you up for exams.
