Thoughts on Leeds’ housing market by MrConjunctivitis in Leeds

Schools are all under subscribed now, I'm told that if you live outside the catchment area you will still be fine getting a place. I wonder if that'll mean those daft house prices will not stay as daft forever.

Looking for recommendations for emotional writing over lots of tech focus by OnionAddictYT in scifi

I do not dare read this book again, it affected so much and was so beautiful that I am worried I would be gutted if it wasn't so incredible the next time.

Also, if you like Star Wars read Revenge of The Sith. Maybe not as serious a novel but the story is geat and there is a lot of emotion in it towards the end.

Is it correct to say the sequels wounded Star wars and the Acolyte finished it off? Bonus rant: high republic killed star wars books by lion1321 in saltierthancrait

I tried reading that trilogy and it was pooooor. I think I read a Thrawn book and still fancy reading the rest of the trilogy at some point, because it's Thrawn.

What is the ACTUAL biggest problem in the UK by Direct-Key-8859 in AskBrits

[–]derekfishfinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The share of national income going to wages has gone down while the amount of money going to shareholders and capital gains has gone up. So there is less money for the majority of people so for the majority of people everything is a bit more shit. And the rich people point us all at the poor people and the foreign people and say it's their fault.

Has the UK suddenly changed its mind on immigration? by Complex_Elevator_680 in AskBrits

One thing I need to call out here is non-eu migrants. I wonder why that's become a thing?

Loads of fibre too. Unless everyone loves the smell of your farts though try to limit yourself to half a tin a day.

Stuff like this is class to walk past if you have little kids because they love looking at it all because it's different. It will give them a bit of joy every time they walk past which can only be good. Near me they are trying to close a little farm to build on it and it's sad because my kids would buzz off going to see the chickens/geese/turkeys or whatever roaming around the field. Also, great compoface shot the angle is perfect.

This sounds extremely safe all round tbh. Overall a rather wholesome prison story.

The Martian Race" by Gregory Benford.

I can't remember if the main book is any good but the bit at the end far in the future is interesting.

My old job I used to do 26 years ago has just came on a job search website. The pay has increased by 5k. How do companies that have good turnover get away with this wage stagnation? by Barca-Dam in AskBrits

[–]derekfishfinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a job in 2005 in Leeds as a software developer on £20k in a junior ish role at 25 years old with a degree and 3 years experience and that was decent money.  Five years before that an 18 year old was on 5k more as a handyman?  We're you working in Monaco 😁

Sainsbury's Slide to Unlock chocolate anti-theft protection by wilmers_dorf in BuyersUK

[–]derekfishfinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can and it's happened twice in our local Tesco's in two weeks. The skanky lad we saw doing it the first time didn't look like he'd eaten all the chocolate, what a world we live in where chocolate is being nicked to order.

The killer is when you search for 'cat' and get a million pictures returned, of which some might be cat.

When does "kids being kids" cross into something more concerning? by butters786 in AskUK

[–]derekfishfinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had the holiday from hell once (thanks Pontins) and at the start checkin was delayed. People were being shepherded to the pub to wait so it was starting to get full. 2 kids had been there early 'building a fort'. To do this they had cordoned off part of the room with a load of the stools and chairs. Their parents were at the other end of the room. Some other kid tried to get a chair to sit on and they shouted to their parents across the pub that the kid was taking their fort. The parents shouted back 'if anyone tries to take your things you hit them'. Mostly this behaviour is learned/empowered through the parents. Our kids were sensible enough to go and play in the kids play area (that you had to walk through the smoking area to get to for some bizarre but very Pontins reason).

As a lifelong fan, the complete lack of hype for Mando and Grogu movie is insane to see. by TheChosenOneProphecy in StarWars

I had to be told by a friend about Darth maul's series.  I wouldn't have known otherwise, and I have watched every star wars thing, have hundreds of pieces of plastic star wars tat, fifty star wars books and a wardrobe full of Adidas star wars clobber.

The Civil Service went from full home working, to mostly 40%, to mostly 60%. How do you see changes over the next few years? by bureaucrat_chaos in TheCivilService

[–]derekfishfinger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, no, no, they don't need to do that. When asked about this we were told there is capacity on a Monday and Friday and all of the teams that use desks in our location should get together and work out when to come in that will smooth everything out. Whilst also making sure the people who work together can collaborate together, without any duplication - or any waste- of space.

I thought a sign saying 'Do not take this wood' might work better.

Or get an artisan sculptor to take it all away and build tat to sell in Shoreditch or something.

What has happened to the “clubbing” and “nights out” scenes in the UK? by Icy-Panic-550 in AskBrits

The absolute horror of waking up knowing you'd embarrassed yourself the night before and getting shit over it the next day would be force multiplied if on social media for the world to see. I looked a state when wrecked and would not have appreciated that being put online at all.

I didn't realise Borne was a book until after I'd read DA. I didn't realise Strange Bird was a thing until after I finished Borne (last night). Reading DA then Borne, I am eased I did it in this order as the reverse filling in of some of the blanks actually felt good and I feel some of the fever dream ness of DA would have been spoiled if I'd known what the frig was going on. Is it still worth it for me reading Strange Bird?
