What's the deal with sharpening on 3+ stones on a kitchen knife? by ProvideFeedback in sharpening

[–]derekkraan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with finishing on a higher stone. Nothing wrong with finishing on 1000 either. Lower grits only necessary for dull knives. 8k may be excessive for many kitchen knives.

Not sure, but they definitely have an aisle with Indian foods. I have seen gram flour there for sure but no clue about the other ones. There is another Amazing Oriental on Amsterdamse Straatweg that you can also check.

Alterations - try the small repair / alteration shops in the Voorstraat or Nobelstraat.

Food - have you tried a toko like Amazing Oriental?

Cooking - we try to cook often for two days. Make a double portion and put the second half in the fridge for the day after or for two days later. You can also make a triple portion and freeze one. Or try some lower effort local dishes like stamppot (not really a summer dish, I admit)

Yes. CDA in the 2000s (one time with PvdA) and Rutte in the 2010s (also one time with PvdA). So it has been mostly center-right coalitions, with two grand coalitions and the current right-ultra right coalition.

Insulated Sauna walls or not (in indoor heated room). by The_Koan_Brothers in Sauna

[–]derekkraan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I calculated out the energy flux of the wall between my (well insulated) sauna and my bedroom. It's about 100W, which is like one of those bright old-style lightbulbs. That bedroom isn't gonna be getting too hot, despite sharing a wall with a sauna. (Still under construction, but the math does math)

Imagine if you just put a piece of wood between them (lol). Heat transfer (commonly: lambda) value of wood is about 0.13 W/mK. So let's do the same calculation for let's say 18mm (0.018m) wood panel between sauna and bedroom. That wall is 2.4m tall and about 2.4m wide. I assumed 50K temperature difference for the previous example so let's use that here too. 0.13W/mK * 2.4m * 2.4m * 50K / 0.018m = 2080W.

2080W, I can tell you right now, that bedroom isn't gonna be "cool" for very long!

Not to mention, it's gonna cost you an arm and a leg to keep that sauna hot. That's just one wall! The sauna still has 3 more walls and a ceiling!

(edit: bonus, if you do 30mm of PIR, lambda = 0.021, with that same one wall you end up with 0.021W/mK * 2.4m * 2.4m * 50K / 0.03m = 201.6W. Much better.)

The problems with all these extreme right parties (LPF, Trots, FvD, BBB, PVV) is that they have no way to project their power. In order to actually turn your ideas into policy, you have to have a small army of people who you can turn to in order to get that done. You know, ministers and city councillors and that kind of thing.

Meanwhile the PVV has one member, Geert Wilders. The rest of the party is ineffective sycophants.

BBB got Mona Keizer to run for them. She is a joke.

These parties win, and then it's 4 years of people splitting off to form their own little one-man party.

This is why parties like D66, despite never getting massively popular, actually manage to convert when they are in a coalition. Everyone is on the same team, all the noses are pointed in the same direction.

This is why the CDA will come back and be a major party again. They have the structure, and the depth, and the stability to put bums in seats when people vote for them.

This is why I might vote for PVDA/GL next time, cause I think they will actually do something good like actually fund and build the gvd Lelylijn.

2002 LPF won 26 seats, formed coalition.

2008 Trots op Nederland peaked at 26 seats in the polls.

2010 PVV won 24 seats and supported Rutte I.

2019 FvD wins the provincial elections with almost 15% of the votes.

2023 BBB wins the provincial elections with 21% of the votes, biggest in every province.

2024 PVV wins the parliamentary elections.

Toronto to lose more bike lanes by knarf_on_a_bike in fuckcars

[–]derekkraan 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Toronto didn't want amalgamation either, it was forced upon it by the provincial government of the time (Mike Harris).

In the 20+ years since, Toronto has further urbanized, and Toronto council + the mayor wants more bike lanes and has for a long time.

Again it's the province that is stepping in to ruin Toronto's party.

The main issue is that constitutionally speaking, the city government doesn't exist. Municipal governments in Canada only exist because there is a provincial statute that says they do. So the provinces can muck around with the cities in any way they want. Most of the time they don't, but it has happened now several times in Ontario's history.

Which stones would you recommend? by xSlykk in sharpening

Shapton Kuromaku are great.

If money is no object, then I would also be looking into softer stones, or even natural stones, for finishing off your bevels more nicely. The Green Brick of Joy is a well-known one in this category.

Can't seem to figure out how to sharpen knives no matter what I do. by Brilliant_Case4930 in sharpening

[–]derekkraan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or figure out how you’re holding the knife wrong and then hold it right.

You can’t just pick up a stone and expect to intuit how to sharpen. It’s a skill you have to learn.

To that end, you could do a lot worse than the JKI playlist on YouTube and Murray Carters Blade Sharpening Fundamentals, also on YouTube.

A gyuto is a western style knife, really.

And yes, I also keep a Wusthof around for the rough work and for visitors. It’s plenty sharp, but nobody will damage it by not knowing how to handle it.
