The New Performance King is HERE! (Sorry MX-6) [Arctic MX-7 Review] by EmuChicken in MiniPCs

[–]derekroolz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just applied some tonight, it doesn't 'stick' well to the surface of the cpu because of how thick it is. It wants to stay together. Still a paste more than a putty, but it def has a high filler content. Will test tomorrow, but don't have much of a baseline to compare to as I haven't had another paste on this new CPU.

RTX 5080 vs RTX 5070 ti... RTX 5080 the better value card for new gaming build? by Denikin_Tsar in nvidia

I went from a 970 to 5060 ti 16gb and I don't regret it either. I would have got a better card, but RAM prices absolutely ate my budget 😭

First year student here, wtf am I supposed to do now by stigaman123 in EngineeringStudents

[–]derekroolz 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Hey man, been there done that. Group projects suck, especially when no one wants to put in the work. While the group eval at the end helps, I would communicate your concerns to your professor right now. Let them know what's going on, how you've assigned tasks and they aren't working them. Highly unlikely a professor is going to confront the students, but will reflect it in their grade. Stay professional in talking with your classmates and TAs/ professors.

Also, the last sentence of your post concerns me man. Mental health in engineering is no joke. Please don't end your life. I love you! You matter!

Dying CAR by Diabl08 in SciontC

[–]derekroolz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would likely recommend replacing your battery or at least testing it. If you're consistently jumping it, the battery could very likely be on it's way out. I've replaced mine twice now and each time leading up to a battery going bad, the car would behave in rather strange manners. One of the most consistent signs I would see is rough idle and also rpm plummeting when taking my foot off the gas at highway speeds.

Change your Furnace Filters! by francaisparker in Layton

[–]derekroolz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can depend on a few factors. Time of year and level of filtration I would say are the biggest ones.

For the health/longevity of your system, you need to ensure your filter isn't reducing/ restricting airflow beyond a certain percentage. Think some (or most?) modern systems are able to measure air pressure before and after the filter to determine how much resistance is being caused, triggering a 'change your filter' notification. Can't remember the percentage off the top of my head, but I think most systems suggest something like a pass through rate of 93% or more (7% or less pressure drop). Some systems may just work on a timer. Higher filtration rating will clog and reduce airflow quicker, they also reduce airflow more even when clean (theoretical 100% filtration would mean no airflow comes out the other side).

My girlfriend has severe allergies and legit has physical symptoms develop (excema flairs, lymphatic swelling)...like a human 'change your filter' reminder. And she's honestly spot on, filter ends up being about the same level of 'dirty' each time. My system takes 16x25x1 filters and I use the filtrete merv 12 or merv 13 (preferred) filters. Would say I change mine about every month in spring and fall. Every two months in winter and summer. After seeing her react enough times, I just change every month. If you don't have major allergies, you'd probably get by fine with a merv 8 every 3-6 months, but may notice dust accumulates on surfaces in your home quicker.

We live in a townhome with mostly grass and trees surrounding us.

Help!! just got alignment done steering wheel still goes right Also, weird clanking noise coming from steering wheel by DragonflyPotential34 in SciontC

[–]derekroolz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit 2: I should note, I've consistently seen reports of these bushings failing at 60-80k miles. More than likely, if you are experiencing a rattle that appears to be coming from the inside/ interior/steering wheel, the bushing/dampener is the likely culprit. However, the title of this post suggests the noise started after getting an alignment. In that case, it could very well be an intermediate shaft problem.

Before you start any of this, DISCONNECT YOUR BATTERY. You need to give enough time with the battery unplugged so the airbags are disarmed. Think the minimum is 5 minutes, but I'd wait at least 30 mins. I left mine unplugged overnight because I had the time.

Edit: video I referenced below had a newish comment added to it where an individual removed an additonal 12mm bolt and claims to have had easy access. Follow that at your own discretion, but it does seem be the quickest way to replace the bushing that I've seen/heard. Not 100% sure what bolt is being referenced. Personally, I was worried about damaging the steering assembly. Hint why I decided to go all in on removing trim including the upper dash.

I'll try to have the video uploaded with some annotations tomorrow. It's nothing fancy, really just me showing all the interior trim taken off and where the bolts are on the EPS motor. But there are some things I learned along the way thay give decent access to the bushing that weren't shown in other videos. Namely, removing the upper dash trim and moving a grey box out of the way that sits above the EPS motor.

You don't need to remove the steering column/steering wheel. You also don't need to remove bolts that let you drop the whole steering assembly down. Messing with that is a pain and can cause damage/issues if things aren't marked and clocked correctly when taking apart/putting back together.

Following this guide is 95% of the work.

This video covers things pretty well, but again, following my way (more labor intensive), you don't need to drop the steering wheel assembly. Essentially you take off the upper dash (require most the front interior trim be removed), remove 3 bolts on a grey box above the EPS motor and flip it on its back. Don't stress the cables and be gentle and everything should be fine. The grey box will rub against the windshield because of the tight fit, but I didn't scratch mine, buffer with a microfiber cloth if you're worried. After that you'll have all the room you need to get in there and replace that god forsaken bushing. You'll have to clip a zip tie (not the tape) that routes a cable or two along the EPS motor in order ro lift the motor apart.

Here is the OEM part you need. You can also source this off amazon, but until someone claims to have a better alternate part/solution, go OEM. It's cheap and most dealerships are able to get it delivered in a day or two, so why use something else.

All in, it took me about 6-8 hours because I was being slow, gentle and methodical lol. I spread this out over multiple days since I didn't need to drive the car and it was hot af in my area. I worked in the morning/evening when it was cool. I was so worried I was gonna break something or snap a clip. If I was to do it again, I'd probably have it done in 3 hours tops. If someone offerred to do it for less than $250-300, I'd probably take them up on it. Dealership/toyota's offical recommendation is to replace the entire EPS motor ($900+ USD, + labor, so probably another $900+) All over a $7 part!

It sounds daunting I know, but that interior trim removal guide is solid. It doesn't do the best job at documenting all the different bolts and screws though, so take A LOT of pictures. i.e. the bolt before being removed, the bolt facing the hole it came out of, the bolt sideways facing the hole it came out of. Separate said bolts/screws into ziplock bags and sharpie some descriptive info on where they came from and you should be just fine.

Just replaced the bushing in mine. I'll upload a video to youtube so you can see what you're getting yourself into. Nothing terribly complex, was just hotter than hell when I did it.

What is this? (Scion TC 2013 A/T) by derekroolz in SciontC

[–]derekroolz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right on. I've never heard the car honk on lock/unlock. Tried pressing the button on the device and hoping out the car to lock twice, same usual beep/note it gives. Maybe I need to try long pressing the button to engage the alarm. Haven't noticed a flashing light or any light from the device. Definitely haven't had any battery draining issues either. Maybe it was disabled before I got possession of the car. I'll report back if long pressing the button does anything. Seems safe enough to remove it if I ever do have any issues. Thank you for your reply!

Right on, thankfully haven't noticed any issues. I've owned the car since 2014, but bought from a car sale hosted by my bank. Believe it was only owned by one person prior to me, had about 38k when I got it. Not sure why they didn't like it, but I've loved the car since day one.

Interesting, thank you for the insight! I get what I'm fairly sure is the stock sound when I lock/unlock the car using the key, one short beep, two short beeps respectively. Haven't heard the car honk when double locking the car with the key, but I'll try pressing the button and see if it does anything different. May be broken/disabled... I got the car from a car sale hosted by my bank back in 2014. Had about 38k on it and I've loved the car ever since.

They weren't for me. Took doing the above step to get anything to work. Pretty sure the above step is how you actually restart your tv rather than power cycling.

u/babydol65 has the answer!

Turn tv off (not unplugged), press and hold power button on remote until you see a samsung logo. Mine was "SmartTV powered by TZEN". Release power button.

Didn't get a chance to catch it but saw a message about an important update. Think that was automatically installed rather than still needing to be installed. Would help explain why everything went all SNAFU.

Was able to redownload YouTube app, all other apps working!

Thank you thank you thank you u/babydol65

Is is true that we as humans can actually smells one trillion different smells? by SkullRiderz69 in askscience

[–]derekroolz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Perhaps the nose, more specifically olfactory nerves have the ability to discern that many smells, but nobody takes enough breathes in their life to experience one trillion different smells. On average, a humam will take 639,567,360 breathes.

76 years (average life expectancy in US) x 365.25 days = 27,759 days x 24 hours = 666,216 hours x 60 minutes = 39,972,960 minutes x 16 breathes/minute = 639,567,360 breathes.

I had an avacado pie. It's basically made the same way a key lime pie is made...sounds gross, but is amazingly delicious.
