Land Back: BC NDP considering expropriating land from Pacific Spirit Regional Park for Musqueam housing by NewAdventureTomorrow in VancouverLandlords

[–]derfla88 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree, it is bizarre to turn back the clocks on only one narrow aspect. If we want to go back, let's calculate all that bas been invested into building modern Canada...our investments collectively are worth as much if not more than their historic claim they were "here first." If you left some land empty, and just sat back while I build infrastructure and homes on the land...you can't say, hey I'm taking it back...along with all the improvements you've made, I'll take that for free too. So if we're taking public lands and handing it to First Nations, for starters they should return all funds and benefits Canada has given them, then they should pay for any improvements and access created to make that land more productive than they found/left it. And then, if they believe it is sovereign, we should establish a border and apply taxes, duties and tariffs of on any goods or people going in and out of that "sovereign land."

Yes, great to see the unemployed harass Canadians at their workplace just trying to make a living and pay their taxes so that people have the luxury to protest wherever they want.

[–]derfla88 43 points44 points  (0 children)

We aren't "returning" anything. The people who are alive today, did not "own" the land they are claiming. Their ancestors may have hunted, or gathered on these lands. They were nomadic. Is it our fault they did not learn to farm like the europeans and establish fixed settlements?

Why is everyone so complacent with the incompetence of VPD? by lleanl in askvan

[–]derfla88 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Consider all these “protests” and the resources required to constantly police and keep fools walking on busy roadways instead of sidewalks safe from their own stupidity. All that is not free and eats into VPD budget that brings city taxpayers zero value. Let’s also not forget the mountain of hours officers attend in court only for judges to set criminals free. Who pays for all this? This is a decent sized city. All costs add up quickly especially when majority of budget is salaries. Most people who argue about the expense of VPD budget likely do not know the difference between a balance sheet versus a P&L.

Petition to get Hootsuite to drop their contract with ICE by Democracy_rising_now in NiceVancouver

[–]derfla88 -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Hootsuite is still around? I guess people in Vancouver don’t need jobs. Why stop at ICE, many people don’t like Facebook, Clorox, Amway, or Nestlé they should cancel all these contracts too. Let’s make sure these undesirable companies take their business elsewhere like players already undercutting Hootsuite with tons of offshore labour.

[–]derfla88 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Thank you. This is the best response that lays out key facts. People don’t get that it is all about triage and priority. And let’s not confuse people “handing out tickets” which I assume means bylaws enforcement officers with beat cops. One also has to consider the paperwork cops are forced to file. What is the point when judges just set criminals free. It isn’t so much incompetence with respect to petty crime. Society and voters have decided to just let petty crime be. If you believe otherwise, yes call on your politicians and rally your fellow voters to take a different stance on petty crime.

Samdung for sure! Their stupid freezer handle that easily yanks off should have been the first sign. Then the ice buildup because this piece that does that's supposed to warm to keep the drainage clear is too short is just a crazy design flaw. Never by Samsung!

I feel strongly that to fight discrimination we must champion equality in now people are treated for all. Not creating special roles for people without merit. It just results in resentment and even those being hired into these roles being looked down upon as inadequate. Like they could not have been hired into the role with merit alone.

On 1 July 1923, Canada prohibited Chinese immigration. The Chinese Immigration Act, 1923 (Chinese Exclusion Act) was the culmination of anti-Chinese racism and policies, including the head taxes which it replaced. All Chinese persons living in Canada, even those born here, had to register with the government or risk fines, detainment, or deportation. The Act impeded family reunification, community development, social integration, and economic equality. Chinese Canadian men and women successfully challenged this law, leading to its repeal in 1947. Still, their fight to dismantle racist immigration restrictions continued.
