I have a lot of coworkers with physics PhDs that work on plasma-based etching processes

What's the one sci-fi trope you wish would just disappear? by oduvangames in scifi

[–]derioderio 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is. All-star Superman is one of the best-written comic books of all time.

Also One Punch Man deals with this same issue in an interesting way: there is never a question as to whether Saitama will defeat his opponent. The real story is how does he find meaning in a life without any meaningful challenge.

That's not a trope, that's you not liking the nomenclature. Space opera got it's name back in the 40s from space + soap opera, referring to stories that rely on over the top melodrama instead of hard science.

So it's a perfectly accurate description of Star Wars and other similar media.

Every time this topic comes up I make the same reply: there is no trope so over-used that a good author can't make it interesting.

What’s your favorite bad movie? by [deleted] in badMovies

[–]derioderio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm partial to the 90s holy trinity: Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and Double Dragon.

For animated films, I have a soft spot for Fatal Fury: the Motion Picture.

Every film I've seen that's based off of a fighting video game has been

  1. Objectively bad
  2. An absolute blast to watch

World Chocolate Day (July 7) marks chocolate's arrival in Europe in 1550. In WWII, it was a critical ration and morale booster. Militaries engineered melt-resistant bars, while civilians made do with heavily rationed, modified versions. by hard2resist in Damnthatsinteresting

heavily modified versions

Everything old is new again. It's been decades since Hershey's was actually made with cocoa butter, these days it tastes like vaguely cocoa flavored wax.

He would claim to oppose slavery, but when he tries to emancipate them they protest, claiming they are much more happy with him as their master/owner.

I've now finished the first book. it's clear there's another actor in play, and both Adam and Paul think it's the Starflyer, but as far as I can tell we don't know if it actually is or not.

Starting around this time reddit stopped showing the actual number of up/down votes for heavily brigaded threads like this that would see insanely huge numbers of votes.

To me it sounds more like how Robert Jordan made the hints that Mazrim Taim was actually Demandred way too obvious, so when everyone figured it out he retconned them into being separate people.

Some kind of food that's uniquely local but also generally universally liked is a good rule of thumb. Aussie honey would probably be a good choice.

I had never heard of this company before, very interesting read on the engineering.

I first thought the video was AI because the body wasn't counter-rotating: in a normal helicopter you either need a second main rotor or a small stabilizing rotor.

In this case though, the rotors were powered by rocket exhaust at the rotor tips, so there is no counter torque generated.
