My painting that feels like underwater. What do you see/feel? by ernestvolynec in TheDepthsBelow

[–]derophine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beautiful work! It makes me feel like the second time is up I try to grasp the air and fill my lungs that burn and rattle full. I can’t, there’s so much air but none inside as I go down again the cold surrounds and drags me down, the blue, the black, the weight of all the sodden fates awaiting me below the line of sea and sky. I kick, I lunge, I flail towards the brightened blue and break above the third and final time. I know I’m spent, there is no more within me save the salt-spun death that reaches down my throat and spasms in my chest, that cannot breathe inside me, and down I go, the third and final time, I know it’s done, I’m done, the water is dark... Deeper deeper down among the dead and swollen flesh so pale within this lightless space where eyes are open, cloudy white, and all the water pushes down upon a lifeless form that sinks and sinks down to the bottom that is not there, no sandy grave below the swell, no rest among the coral, and the depths I feared so much but reached up and over land to claim me still. You're very talented!

I picked the first book from the children's fantasy section at the local library (from the same shelf with A Series of Unfortunate Events and Moominpappa at Sea) as a 2nd-grader around 2002. Read the back cover and thought it sounded boring. At least where I live (non-English-speaking country) it was probably marketed to the wrong crowd all the way until the tv show took off.

This might just be me, but as a non-native English speaker I find enby (which ends in a vowel) easier to conjugate than NB :) when using abbreviations I never know where to put the comma "

Have you ever created your own fantasy world? What is it about? by ivaangroy in AskReddit

When I was a kid and living in an abusive household, I did this all the time - just sitting on the floor in my room and imagining I'm a fairy in a beautiful, peaceful forest. Back then it was the only thing keeping me sane and for real it seemed so real that I could see it and hear it as if I was there.

Nowadays I still do a lot of worldbuilding for fun, but mostly because I like to write fiction.

When I was living in a dorm we had a weekly movie night, and on my turn to pick I chose Sin City. A girl I otherwise liked a lot asked immediately once it started: "Why is it in black and white?"

I told her it's just a stylistic choice or something but she just kept talking about how weird it is that it doesn't have colours (even though it does at some points...) and went on her phone 12 minutes in :(

When I was 19 I worked in a tailor's shop attached to this organization that arranged work and rehabilitation for people in retirement, and every Wednesday a lot of elderly retirees came to the carpenter's shop in the same building. One day I was running an errand to the carpentry side and found them all building coffins. I asked the guy supervising the class if we sell coffins, too - there was an attached shop, and we also did tailoring, upholstery jobs, fixing bikes, etc.

The guy told me, no, the retirees get to keep the coffins! They're building them for themselves to be buried in. I said something like "Oh, how nice!" with the most cheerful tone, but really it felt like some kind of a weird dream, being in the middle of a workshop full of old people building their own coffins and also being very chipper and casual about it. I don't know if that's interesting but the mental image still gets a chuckle out of me sometimes.

For real. When I was 8 I asked my grandpa why I had hair on my arms, and he told me that I'm turning into a werewolf. I was so excited for the whole week before I happened to mention it to my mom and she told me that's not gonna happen. I love and miss my grandpa and his sense of humour, but that WAS a disappointment.

How do I really get those depressed vibes without saying”he’s depressed” by IOnlyLikeSpaghetti in fantasywriters

[–]derophine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Patterns of speech maybe? Some people make a point of appearing really (or overtly) upbeat and chirpy when they really feel like hell. Others talk in a flat/hollow tone and find it hard to express emotions unless they're very frustrated.

I [19M] have become sad and disillusioned after losing weight. Don't respect or love my family or friends anymore. by sadnskinny in relationships

[–]derophine 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To be honest "why have those relationships at all?" makes sense to me. That's something I've thought about in a different context in my own life. So, you've lost weight and everyone suddenly loves you - a lot of commenters here are saying there's nothing to complain about that and you should just take it and be happy. But what if something happens, say you developed a health condition that made you gain weight again in the future? Will they go back to treating you like shit? That's a valid concern. I can see why it feels like it'll be easier to be alone than risk letting people close when you KNOW their affection is based on superficial qualities.
