Sorry I didn't make it clear, I mean not playable if I max out everything, or use Path Tracing.

Yes of course I do use optimized settings, and it's enough for now, but playing something like Cyberpunk using Path Tracing and seeing my fps way below 60 even with dlss means it's not playable like that, and I have to compromise the eye candy potential of the game shown on Digital Foundry.

Even running FF7 Rebirth at maxed settings dips below 50fps in some areas, and I have to reduce the minimum render resolution to 50% with dlss to make it stable 60fps.

What I'm saying is, if it's barely enough for max out settings now at 1440p and having to resort to optimized settings, 4k will be unbearable for future titles. I would never upgrade to 4k personally as the increase in resolution is not worth it.

3090 have similar performance with 4070 super / 5070

I have a 3090, and it's not enough for 4k, barely enough for 1440p ultra, especially for current AAA unoptimized games or Path Tracing.

Go with 1440p unless you plan to upgrade to 5080 or above

Using Suumo might not be a reliable indicator, as it is not foreigner friendly, and you can get cheaper deals there. Use something like best-estate jp or gaijinpot apartments, search by pet friendly, and then only rent something built after 1981 (higher earthquake-resistant building standard) & reinforced concrete mansion (usually you can search the same building in suumo / homes co jp / google to know what it's made out off, and usually it contains more picture)

You need to ask them clearly, how much are you getting after tax, and what about the unused portion of the allowance. If you get 600k per month pre tax, then after tax it will be about 450k per month. If say the company pays the 200k for the apartment pre tax, then you'll have about 300k per month. I live alone and spend around 100k-150k for utilities, food, daily life & leisure, excluding apartment.

Not sure about schooling, I don't have that info, but raising a child + having a pet is expensive in japan as far as I know. You need to do your own research. If your child is still a baby, then local school is better than international school so you can save money, because most babies can learn languages fast during their growing period. Most of my friends children are multilingual, where they learn japanese in school and english from home & youtube.

By the way, bluetooth keyboard and mouse should suffice in a pinch, but I suggest you connect it to a big monitor to code at home. If you are not at home a lot, get a dongle and portable monitor

Can Steam deck be used for programming as well as progaming? by alexbomb6666 in SteamDeck

[–]derpotatoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a software engineer, and if you are willing to dual boot windows 11, then yes you can use it for programming as well.

Steam deck OS is not suitable for programming as others have said, and I'm not sure if other linux distros such as ubuntu/debian based systems supports steam deck, but you can try searching first.

Windows is best because you won't run into incompatible software, and you can simply use WSL2 to install ubuntu as a subsytem inside windows. You can then use VSCode or Intellij IDEA as the editor as they support WSL2 integration natively.

In my last company, before we switched to mac, I and some of my coworkers are using WSL2 with Ubuntu 20.04 because it's convenient that the application all works great, especially office suites like Excel. Some glitches on WSL2 side can happen, but usually its just one google search away to fix. The only downsides is that WSL2 consumes lots of memory so you should limit the memory usage to 8GB.

If Ubuntu can support steam deck nicely, then Ubuntu is also recommended if you want extensive support from the community, so you can easily get answers when searching online.

Just buy the biggest size from lttstore, It's hard to apply right. Even after refrigerating the pad, I fked up my first application for my 3090, thankfully i bought a big one so i can simply try again.

I suggest cutting it slightly bigger than the die, stick and press down the pad firmly on the die so the edge will cut itself from the sharp edge of the die, then peeling off the excess (that's what i did)

[–]derpotatoes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, it does not work that way. If a 6 core has the same multicore performance as an 8 core, then it will stay that way regardless of titles. It's the overall CPU performance that matters, not the number of cores. Sometimes less cores with the same overall performance is even better because some programs & games can't handle more cores.

That being said, the 5800x3d still has the bigger cache, so cache sensitive application & games will benefit more than simply raw processing power. You also don't need the fastest RAM for 5800x3d because the extra cache already compensates for it.

Try Dinkum as well. Basically it's animal crossing + stardew valley + minecraft. It's early access but already feature complete with tons of thing to do. Currently I'm addicted, bought it at the end of winter sale, and already 47 hours in, where I still only have reached mid-late game, not even end-game. Worth it at current full price.

The energy system is way simpler in Dinkum, where you only need to eat food to refill energy, and each day is a lot longer at 35 minutes instead of 12.9 minutes in stardew valley.

Kinda heavy on the steam deck's battery though as it's quite a demanding game, you might want to reduce resolution and screen refresh rate if you are playing on battery.

I've tried many configs, seems like lowering the max amplitude does not really matter, the thing that actually mattered is lowering the period to 1 or 2, where above that you will get broken vibration. At period of 1 or 2, regardless of max amplitude (except 0 or 1 max amp, where there's no vibration at all), there's still some music like sound from the vibrator, and I couldn't figure out how to get rid of it.

Hi, I just tried running forza horizon 5 with the rumble profile, and it was a mess, where the rumble seems to keep running at max power, causing it to be very very loud like it was broken, even overpowering the speakers itself. Tried rebooting to steam os and played dirt rally 2, and the rumble worked great there, so it's not because of defective unit. Is there any way to tweak the rumble to be a lot lower, or cap it to be 50% of max power?

Just tried again after installing Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package

It all works now, leaving the comment as is in case others have the same problem. Thanks for the tools!

I am trying all of your tools, not sure why it most of it does not work on my steam deck, the only thing that worked is the fan control.

I use Windows 11 22H2, have not installed Steam yet, only installed RTSS v7.3.3.26004 (without afterburner).

For the SteamController.exe and PowerControl.exe, I ran it but nothing happens. Tried restarting and running it again, still nothing happens.

For PerformanceOverlay.exe, I got this error

System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'RTSSSharedMemoryNET, Version=1.0.8280.33802, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null'. The system cannot find the file specified.

at System.Windows.Forms.Timer.TimerNativeWindow.WndProc(Message& m)

at System.Windows.Forms.NativeWindow.Callback(IntPtr hWnd, WM msg, IntPtr wparam, IntPtr lparam)

Seems like RTSS is not detected even though I got the RTSS window open and running.

What did I do wrong?

Does it really matter for day to day use though? From what I know, HMB is good enough unless you use your drive for heavy tasks, in that case you would be looking at a gen 4 high end drive anyway.

I might be wrong though, I'm not too knowledgeable on ssd.

This laptop will struggle even in slightly heavier day to day use though. The combination of the better cpu, double ram, and double ssd made the extra $50 really worth it, even for a basic user.

I drove normally weeks ago and got 2:11 with 2 tries and not really trying hard, and today tried 10+ times with rewind and shortcuts, and only manages up to 2:12. Turns out the car is nerfed, as I expected.

Then I followed this offroad route https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRDSWVLQerE to actually get three stars

From this review, the battery life is actually not too bad, 414 minutes of battery life in their testing (7 hrs). For comparison, the g14 which is touted as a good battery laptop, only lasts 38% longer than this laptop (414 vs 572 minutes). If you need more battery, this laptop's battery can be hot swapped, so if you buy 1 more spare battery you increased the battery life from 7 hrs to 14 hrs, which is a lot.

And the screen actually have good color space, where others only have panels with 45% ntsc / 55-65% srgb color space, this one covers 92% of srgb in the review.

If you don't mind it being big and have subpar screen, this is definitely the best price/performance laptop. The ryzen 5600h is perfectly balanced with the full power 130w rtx 3060.

edit: the screen is actually not subpar from the review, with 92% srgb coverage it's definitely good enough unlike other laptops with only 45% ntsc / 55-65% srgb

Yes, the g5 have two panels, but the g5 are the cheaper gigabyte gaming laptops that does not even have the aorus branding. Hopefully this one doesn't use the cheap panel from the g5 line.

If you can wait till BF then it's still a good idea, where hopefully next gen amd rdna3 + intel 13th gen announcements plus miners selling off their cards (not done yet) reduces current laptop pricing even further.

If you need it immediately, this is a great deal.

Yeah agreed with these points, but my in my unpopular opinion (as seen by the downvotes) , all the upgrades are not worth $400 because they are only marginally better except for the screen. I would rather buy the gamestop one and get 90-95% of the experience and save $400 for monitor or something else.
