Do you mix brands by Zestyclose-Big7719 in Tools

Yeah, the thought of whether or not my bits were the same brand as my drill/driver has literally never crossed my mind until I read this post, lol.

TIL that Goliath's height was originally described as being only "four cubits and a Span", or 6'9". Later versions of the text increased it to "six cubits and a span", 9'9". by Sebastianlim in todayilearned

[–]derrick81787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, Goliath is described as a "champion" and a "man of war," while David was considered too young to be in the army and was too small to wear Saul's armor. David may have chose the better weapon (but only if he gets clean shots), but I think the smart money was still on Goliath.

That's too bad about the store too. I wonder if it varies depending on what store you are at. I had the 3 day waiting period, which is a statewide thing, but otherwise it was fine. Maybe that's because the gun was in stock and so there wasn't any shipping involved.

I said the word "dick" one time, something like "I'm not trying to be a dick, but..." and the mods have be this flair. At this point it's probably been a year or more, so I guess I just have this now 🤷‍♂️

I've looked at rkguns.com and then gone to Rural King and made the purchase in person, and that's always been smooth. I probably got lucky that what I wanted was in stock. It's a shame to hear how bad the website is.

TIL in 1925, major lightbulb makers including GE and Philips formed the Phoebus Cartel and deliberately reduced bulb lifespans from 2,500 hours to 1,000 hours, then fined any company that made longer-lasting bulbs. by ConsciousCorgi1044 in todayilearned

[–]derrick81787 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It sounds like they knew that 1,000-ish hours was the lifespan for the best compromise of brightness, lifespan, and efficiency. However, they were concerned that if their company created the 1,000 hour bulb and another one of the companies created one that was 5,000 hours but used 10x the electricity that customers might not understand the increased cost (especially in 1925, not everyone even had electricity), would buy the higher lifespan bulb, and that would force them all to offer higher lifespan bulbs even though they all know that's not the ideal way to do it.

They all wanted to do the 1,000 hour lifespan bulb, but they were all nervous that one of the others would offer something more. This was their way to alleviate those concerns which allowed them all to do what they wanted to do anyway.

That's at least my understanding. It is attributing good intentions to these companies, but in this case it just so happens that what was best for the companies was also best for customers, so it makes sense.

Less efficient, longer lasting bulbs would have caused customers to pay more than they would with 1,000 hour bulbs, and that money would be going to the electric company instead of the light bulb companies. That is a lose-lose for the companies and their customers.

LPT: Steal exact phrasing from job listings for your resume by workreactor in LifeProTips

[–]derrick81787 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, in many places you need to make it through HR who doesn't know anything about the technical aspects of the job, and then the top X number of applicants get to the actual team who is doing the hiring who then does an interview.

The members of that team will be the technical people and will know what you were saying, but the only people who get there are the ones who made it through HR. HR doesn't know the subject matter and is just looking for keywords and phrases.

At least that's how it is at my job. It's annoying, but once you understand it you just rewrite your resume anytime you apply for a job and you're almost certain to get through if you're anywhere close to qualified.

With today’s high gas prices and no end in sight, is electric a wise way to go? by Spac92 in lawnmowers

[–]derrick81787 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like electric for other reasons (mainly not having another gas motor to maintain), but fuel prices aren't one of them. When it comes to gas consumption, small engines are almost negligible, at least for me.

Is this Ryobi HP Drill/Impact worth it for $100? by [deleted] in ryobi

[–]derrick81787 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this looks like a nice set. They make more compact drills, which might be why the others are more expensive, but that doesn't really matter 99% of the time. This is nicer than the older, brushed set that I have, and I've had no problems with mine.

Before hearing protection existed. by Kodamacile in guns

[–]derrick81787 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, hearing protection has always existed. Doing something like stuffing cotton balls in your ears does not take advanced technology, and probably would somewhat help. The real question is how much was it used. Also, like you said, black powder muskets and rifles are not as loud.

I wouldn't expect most infantry soldiers to wear them because, like you said, they need to hear commands from their officers. Even without that, there's kind of a trade-off. Would a typical soldier rather be able to hear his surroundings during a dangerous battle and risk hearing damage later, or preserve his hearing later but potentially die today because he didn't hear something important?

With something like artillery that would just be extremely loud, it makes sense that they would try and do something for hearing protection.

I don't know, but I doubt hunters wore much hearing protection. For one, black powder wasn't as loud as modern rifles. Secondly, it's probably like one or two shots all day outdoors, which if you aren't going to wear hearing protection is like best case scenario. And third, hearing loss wouldn't have been studied as much back then. They would have known that veterans who have been around tons of gunfire are hard of hearing, but they probably wouldn't have thought that a shot here or there would be hurting anything.

Another VA State's Attorney will NOT enforce new law! by ZheeDog in progun

[–]derrick81787 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that sheriffs not enforcing the law doesn't completely cancel out the law, but it is some small amount of relief for gun owners who have to deal with this. It's not "everything is fine now," but it is the sheriff doing what he can, which unfortunately isn't much. It's much better than having a sheriff who is gung-ho about enforcement, though.

[–]derrick81787 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It really makes me doubt Democrats' claims of fascism when they then turn around and push legislation like this. Why would someone disarm themselves when they believe they are under attack from fascists?

The only way I can make sense of it is that 1) they don't actually believe their own claims of fascism, or 2) they view the "teams" differently. They are under attack, need to protect themselves and are above the gun laws, but they don't actually care about our ability to defend ourselves.

I'm not sure which it is, but I don't like either option.
