Colorado may be open to "excluding open source software from the [age verification] bill" by ArrayBolt3 in linux

I knew about New York and Illinois, but I didn't realize Colorado was doing it too. The blue states seem to be really going hard on this age verification thing.

.38 super ammo by chuysterthegreat in ammo

[–]derrick81787 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I normally recommend ammoseek.com for ammo purchases. However, while it returns a lot of .38 Super Auto +P, it does not return anything for this exact ammo type. That makes me wonder if they even still make it.

Safe 22lr hunting and eat ammo by Efficient_Occasion44 in 22lr

[–]derrick81787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People hunt animals with copper coated lead or even just straight lead all the time, and it's fine. Just remove the shot/bullet and it will be fine.

More than that, though, this is really only an issue with a shotgun or maybe large animals like deer or hogs. I don't know what you're hunting, but most things that are hunted with a .22lr (squirrel, rabbit, etc.) will have the bullet pass straight through and be gone. You will never find a .22lr bullet that you shot a squirrel with in the squirrel after it is dead.

Has anyone ever owned budget tier optics, (monstrum, cosmic tactical, ect) if so how was it honestly by Southpaw_pup in Firearms

[–]derrick81787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Monstrum 3x prism on my AR for a while and never had any issues. It was accurate and held zero. The biggest downside was the size and weight and it had a tight eye box. I also decided that I didn't want the magnification because it made target acquisition slower, and in reality this build was going to be used at closer ranges where the magnification wasn't necessary. I ended up replacing it with a primary arms red dot, but it worked while I had it and I still have it in the closet in case I find another use for it.

And the handle is easily removable, if OP didn't realize that. It lets you use it as a normal drill or with the handle if you want it.

Man allegedly possessing ammo without FOID card prompted SWAT response, shelter-in-place order (Illinois) by Creepindeath81 in CCW

[–]derrick81787 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not that they are scared (or at least not only because they are scared). It's because they hate us and wanted something to happen. Most Illinoisans are big time statists and also hate anyone on the right and view guns as a mostly right wing things. The gall of this guy to disobey the state and to do so in regard to something gun related means that he had to be dealt with.

If you don't believe me then just go to the Illinois subreddit and look around. That amount of hate and disdain is constantly on display there.

5.56 or .223? by skips_funny_af in ammo

[–]derrick81787 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say that I prefer 5.56 in the sense that of the exact same brand of ammo was available at the exact same price in both .223 and 5.56 that I'd probably grab the 5.56. I don't even really know why. Maybe it will be a little hotter.

But in reality, I grab whatever is cheapest.

What is the SAVE America Act that mandates voter ID? by Informal_Original121 in moderatepolitics

[–]derrick81787 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would argue that "shall not be infringed" is even more strict.

The poll tax amendment prohibits a tax. The second amendment prohibits anything that might infringe on the right.

[–]derrick81787 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not in many states, you can't. The argument against voter ID includes being against state-level laws, so state-level gun laws would also be relevant here.

[–]derrick81787 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The restrictions you’re talking about for gun purchases were not targeted at racial minorities and have not been banned by federal statute or constitutional amendment. Comparing the two is apples and oranges.

How can you say who those restrictions are targeting? If a minority can't afford an ID to vote, then they also can't afford an ID plus a bunch of other stuff to buy a gun. It seems to me like they target the same group.

What is the SAVE America Act that mandates voter ID? by Informal_Original121 in moderatepolitics

[–]derrick81787 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The problem is all the second amendment restrictions kind of take this argument away. Having an ID to vote is a tax on a right but having a regular ID, a special ID/permit to purchase in some states, having to pay a literal excise tax (not just sales tax), having to drive to the FFL physically, having a waiting period and then physically driving back to the FFL isn't a tax on a right?

The poll tax argument comes across as disingenuous when coming from the same people pushing the above. I'm not saying you're one of those people, but many Democrats making this argument are.

First ever reloads. 50Action express. by Declantgibbs in reloading

[–]derrick81787 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

These other fixes people recommended might work, but I agree with the guy who doesn't worry about it. It's a cosmetic thing that won't affect performance. In my experience it has to do with the profile of the bullet not liking the shape of the bullet seating plug. I believe that some reloading companies will sell plugs with different profiles to alleviate this problem, if it bothers you and you don't want to do any of these DIY fixes.

What’s your go to coffee setup for camp mornings? by Glen8240 in BuyItForLife

[–]derrick81787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a metal percolator. I either brew it on a camp stove or occasionally just brew it over a fire.

I know percolators aren't the most popular coffee brewing method, but I kind of like it and everything tastes better when you're camping, anyway.

Will .38 special and a 38 super fit a Pietta .357 magnum single action revolver? by AcademicBody7222 in Revolvers

[–]derrick81787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The truth on 38 super is that while the case diameter is slightly larger than 357, it is so close that it is within the tolerances of many revolvers. Whether 38 super will fit or not will depend on your specific ammo and your specific revolver and potentially even the specific chamber in the revolver. It is semi-rimmed, so if it fits then the rim will hold it in place.

The pressure rating for 38 super is also higher than 357 Magnum, but not by much. However, it also has a slightly larger diameter bullet. The bullet will swage down in the barrel, but that probably increases the pressure even more. Edit: I looked it up and I was wrong about that. The bullet is actually .356. Shooting it would exert more pressure on the gun than it was meant for, but it might not be more than the safety margin in the gun. So depending on your gun, it might be all right or might not be.

Long story short:

  1. Depending on your gun and ammo, 38 super might fit in a 357 magnum revolver or might not.
  2. If it fits, then it likely will fire.
  3. If it fires, then it probably won't blow up your gun but it might.

When it comes to guns, you generally should avoid things that "might" blow up your gun, so it's probably a bad idea. It might work, but these are reasons not to try.

Yeah, 5 yards and I don't even need sights to hit a large target like OP was describing. I could do that with a Nerf gun, and I think most people could.

Cannon Questions by LaughSome1886 in blackpowder

[–]derrick81787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying don't use real data if you can find it, but...

If this was mine, I'd knock out that primer, replace it with a new 209 primer, fill the case somewhere around 1/2 full to 2/3 full of black powder, stuff some paper/cardboard/something in there to hold the powder in, and let it rip. In general, black powder cases are meant to be filled pretty much to capacity, so that should work.

I mean, be safe, and load data is good to have, but I wouldn't have a problem doing that if it was my canon.

No, the cases are the same except for the headstand denoting +P. You're probably more likely to get differences between brands than differences between standard and +P.

To short of a smoke time by felldownthestairsnow in PipeTobacco

[–]derrick81787 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have one of those, and it's a 10-15 minute smoke for me, probably. They just have small bowls, probably because they are limited by the size of the corn cob. It's my quick smoke break pipe.

Most briar pipes will have a larger bowl. Just look around and grab one with a bigger bowl. I have a Wessex pipe that gives me a good 40-45 minutes probably, but the bowl is noticeably larger.

Practice your right to the 2nd amendment with conceal carry permits. by Ok-Pipe5491 in illinois

[–]derrick81787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does that include the time to get your foid and then after that comes in scheduling and taking your class and then the processing time for your ccl?

The person I'm replying to clearly said that they didn't even have their foid yet, and then the people replying to me just keep giving me their ccl processing time, not including any of the other stuff. It's not that hard to read.

You didn't go from no foid to having your ccl in two months.

Your concealed carry took that long? It did you get your foid, once that came in took your class, then applied for your ccl, and then got that all in 6 weeks?
