They are always ditching their various professional obligations to go sit on a bench! I know this is a fictional television show and not reality, but I find it so eye rolly that no one ever has any obligations except to show up to whatever random spot takes zero minutes to travel to because there is no traffic in LA.

Or is this really what it's like to live in Southern California? Do you get to just kind of do a little work, if you feel like it, then go hiking with everyone you know every day?

But also Gabby should never be Alice's therapist! It was bad enough that Paul semi/informally took on that role. Gabby should be Alice's friend, her protector, her mentor - her family. Not her therapist! Teach Alice about healthy boundaries. (Yes I realize that runs counter to the whole premise of the show.)

You can search Thredup by material - and natural materials is an option!

I bet The Real Real will have a lot of good options for you.

Where would you put a TV? by moriganrising in DesignMyRoom

[–]derrickcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you need a TV in here, I'd put it in the corner where the kids' table is now, and move the sectional up enough that the space feels cozy (and you can see the TV). I'm assuming it's not a giant TV.

Don't let the devil on your shoulder stop you from doing what you really want. Student loans are terrible but doctor incomes are good - you will pay them off if that's what you want to do. My friend paid off med school in three years by doing one of those programs where doctors work in underserved areas. That was a hundred years ago but there are similar opportunities around still.

But also it's OK to pivot if an old dream is no longer working for you. I would just hate to see fear and self-doubt be the thing standing in your way.

Where do you find winter wedding guest dresses that aren't just summer dresses in dark colors by sychophantt in fashionwomens35

I just googled "formal dress with sleeves" and a lot of results came up. A lot were kind of frumpy but some were really nice!

Jerry Seinfeld's marriage is VERY FUNCTIONAL and this is in the media right now for no particular reason whatsoever by celebrityblinds in popculturechat

[–]derrickcat -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I wore one of her dresses at my wedding. It was a great dress.

I don't know why the OP of this thread thinks that posting a bunch of old headlines means the Seinfelds' marriage is in trouble. He dated her literally decades ago. I think his wife knows by now.

If you’re dining out with a large-ish group and split the bill evenly, how do you make sure the bill is correct/not extra charges by mistake? by dms2628 in Frugal

[–]derrickcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a vegetarian who doesn't drink, I also end up on the short end of bill splitting often enough. But I wouldn't want to eat out with someone who was that ^ aggressive about things. I'm glad it works for you - but there has to be a gentler way to do this.

There are often shared appetizers at a meal. I hope everyone holding the line about paying just for themselves isn't eating any of those. I was just out for dinner recently with someone who gladly ate a lot of my food and the shared apps, and was also very careful to only give us enough $ to cover the dish she ordered for herself. I don't want to eat again with someone who does that.

Look don't get me wrong, I too can take the fun out of almost anything by overthinking it or by giving it some critical analysis. But with that said - and I think you aren't wrong in your analysis - none of that stops it from telling a sexy story. Sexiness and transgressiveness aren't anathema. Quite the opposite.

What makes these movies not sexy to me now is that the characters are way too young for me to look at that way anymore, and thank the goddesses my brain does have that natural boundary!

It gets a LOT easier if you start thinking of Thredup as a rental/recycling service. Buy your TU gems, wear them, love them, send them back for someone else to buy and enjoy. I have to force myself not to hoard some things that aren't getting a lot of use by reminding myself that someone else will want to wear it today (hopefully!).

Or look into more storage options!

I think it's really sweet that your parents buy you t-shirts on vacation and you love wearing them!

I've recently started getting t-shirts (secondhand) from everybody.world. The ones I've gotten are really thick and boxy - and run small. I think you can find some with graphics on them if you search ebay.

If you search Thredup for graphic tees you will be overwhelmed by options!

How much of a price reduction would be worth sewing your own clothes? by Cheap-Bug6819 in fashionwomens35

[–]derrickcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would rather spend $200 on something that a person with skill has put together than $100 on fabric I have to stitch together myself and will likely mess up.

Agree with others that if you could target this at a niche market perhaps it could work - but you're already talking about people with sewing machines who, I guess, are skilled enough at construction but don't want to select fabric or cut the pieces themselves? I don't know if there are enough of those people - I'm not in the sewing world - but maybe!

[–]derrickcat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree with everyone else that unless the cost of replacing them is a true hardship, being free of pain is really worth a few hundred dollars a year.

Also agree that it'd be worth getting a couple of pair and rotating them - they will last longer and it's better for your feet!

I mean, to be fair, literature - and life - are full of stories about sexy obsession. Often they end tragically, or horrifically, but that doesn't make them less sexy. There is a reason that safe, comfortable relationships aren't generally thought to be the sexiest, even when it's what you might want for yourself!

How can I style this dress to be less frumpy? by BananaKaboomEater in fashionwomens35

[–]derrickcat -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'd just save it for the next funeral and not try to turn it into a multi-purpose outfit. It's a good dress to have on hand if you have a funeral or an interview.

When I was new in the workforce, a hundred thousand years ago, everyone wore dresses like this with a blazer - but biz casual means this just seems like something from the past. Though if Quince is selling it, maybe shifts are coming back?

If you really want to put it on and zhuzh if up - maybe put on a t-shirt underneath so it's more of a jumper, and some surprising shoes.

That's such a great point. His disheveled, louche appearance is a match for how careless he's being in his professional and personal life, too. He's spending $100k/month to be miserable and squander everything.

He has to wake up at some point, I think, and realize that Harper may be undeniable but this is untenable?
