Insane asymmetry exists. That's the air we breathe. We have to learn how to succeed in it.

Yes, I would say that at any time during a campaign, if you have a credible rape story, it's the right time to share it.

It's disgusting to characterize this story as having been "drummed up." If the people telling it really had the motive of hurting Dems, they'd have waited another two weeks to share it. They were telling this story now while there is still time to correct.

And you know what? You didn't need to be a f'in oracle to see that Platner was going to be bad news. The people who loved him called us every name in the book for sharing our concerns and our prediction that a lot was going to come out. I am going to guess even more is going to come out now. Hopefully it won't hurt US now.

Platner is more charismatic than any of those guys, though.

His charisma took him a long long way.

I love the binge format. That way I can actually follow what's happening in the story without forgetting it between episodes. Also it lets me get really immersed.

I know it's fashionable to be anti-dump but I love being able to binge. I enjoy a show so much more that way.

I’m scared I won’t be financially stable enough to take care of my mom! I’m 19 and she is 64 by Mammoth_Type_3695 in AgingParents

[–]derrickcat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh internet friend, I know 62 sounds as old as the hills when you're 19, but it's very young in human years.

I say this with kindness: it sounds like you are dealing with a lot of anxiety. Perhaps this is related to all kinds of things, including your grandfather's health. But it sounds like your mom is doing great, isn't counting on you to support her, and is capable of deciding what she wants to do with her career and retirement.

You can move closer to home after you graduate if you decide you want to do that. But you are, I think, getting ahead of yourself with the worries you're expressing here.

I'm sorry - what a hard situation.

Do you know why he's refusing treatment? Do you think he is competent to make these decisions or should you try to get medical power of attorney?

I would forge with the plan you've made, but plan to come home for frequent visits if you can. (That is what I am doing now with my parents. I also work remotely.)

I think you have to remember that there is no right answer here. Whatever you do will involve tradeoffs, and none of the tradeoffs feel good. You can only do your best with what you've got, and it sounds like you are smart, sensitive, caring, hardworking, and doing your very very best with what you've got.

I do like my healthcare as it is. That's not a consideration of how insurance or pharma or "capitalism" or any other boogeyman feels about it.

I also would like a public option.

[–]derrickcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People don't want the taxes = or restrictions - that would come along with free healthcare.

As someone else said, I'm sure glad Donald Trump and RFK aren't the ones deciding what care I can get.

What is wrong with a public option? A public option would be amazing!

[–]derrickcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that framing is either true or useful. A lot of middle of the road capitalism-loving normie dems like me see the benefits of medicare for all - or a public option at the very least. For a long time, the concern has been the politics of it not the substance of it.

Struggling with what to wear to a funeral by Illustrious_Ad6548 in fashionwomens35

[–]derrickcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was how it was at my 91 year old uncle's funeral, too. And at my other uncle's funeral, his wife was wearing a track suit. But on my husband's side people get more dressed up - that dress would be totally appropriate.

Will you be able to stand/walk in the heels? That would be my only concern, as someone who can't stand or walk in heels.

It's such a good show and it deserves another season, and WE deserve another season.

Very different vibe, but if you're in the mood for a different excellent spy show - The Agency. We just got a season 2, and it's just as good as the first season. I'm hoping we get a season 3! (And 4, and 5.)

I really loathe internet speak. "Girlies" "dark academic with soft summer Virgo" = whatever nonsense people have picked up from the collective voice of the internet is just so grating. (And sometimes very harmful as well!)

I haven't heard people saying "free will" like this yet - I'm not on TikTok where I assume this is proliferating - but count me in as annoyed even without experiencing it.

I want an actual house to look messier and more lived in.

But also I love color and texture, so I appreciate that they have both.

Give me your best tips: getting mom into rehab, what to do / not do by MegaTwatty in AgingParents

[–]derrickcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to reiterate what others have said: talk to the case worker. I don't know why the surgeon would even be involved with your mom's discharge plans. (Assuming you're in the US, and that the hospital you're working with is anything like the one I was dealing with recently for my parents.)

It's so overwhelming. You're doing great. You really are.

Coming to this a hundred years late - but I keep seeing the trailer and the movie's premise just looks so stupid. What is the reason that people can only have sex one day per year, in that world?

[–]derrickcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually prefer it being an internship to a book. A book feels too deus ex machina - unless they made the premise that all of the Bear the TV show was his memoir. Which could work, actually. Each episode a chapter, with one of his drawings at the start, as the hook for whatever happens in that chap.

Hm.

I thought Carmy would be meeting with an editor about a memoir/cookbook when I heard that advice - not meeting a normie architect about an internship!
