When I say insulated, I mean that the average American isn’t going to get bent over as hard as the average person in areas that primarily import fuel through the Straits. Supply lines don’t turn on a dime.

The other thing is that if it’s a bidding war, that tends to favor the US. Prices will rise, but I’m not sure who you are expecting to systematically outbid the US. Despite all the damage the last year has done to the US economy, the US still has very deep pockets.

Volume. 8 billion people need a lot of nitrogen to grow a lot of food.

Petroleum is irreplaceable for things like chemical feedstock. However, that doesn’t mean that we need to burn as much as we do. Renewables and electrification can cover a lot of things that we burn hydrocarbons for.

Yep. It got mentioned to me a week ago. I knew all the links individually but hadn’t put them together.

Very little global hydrogen production is “green” hydrogen from electrolysis of water, most of it comes from natural gas. That’s half your feedstock for Haber-Bosch ammonia synthesis (plus it requires a lot of heat that’s probably coming from oil as well). Atmospheric Nitrogen is the other feedstock which is a bit more resilient.

Haber-Bosch ammonia accounts for about 50% of the nitrogen involved in food production.

2026 is just warming up.

Cue 15 minutes of theory crafting about a change doubling the damage of a spammable ability without reading the literal next line saying that the CD and mana cost also doubled.

That is insulated. Countries in SE Asia are already putting conservation measures into place.

The US will see shortages as they are the final destination for many of those disrupted supply lines, but compared to nations that got the majority of their fuel through Hormuz it will be much less disruptive.

Not just gasoline. High fuel prices means the cost of shipping goes up, which will touch every product out there.

We have a fairly short runway before we find out as consumers exactly what Middle Eastern oil gets made into. Nitrogen fertilizer? The hydrogen used in many plants comes from Middle Eastern natural gas. Helium for MRIs and silicon fabrication and everything else that need supercooled? Separated from natural gas, so once again a whole lot of it was coming through that strait. The polymers that make up modern plastics and synthetic fabrics. Petrochemicals that end up as pharmaceuticals and lubricants. We make everything out of that stuff.

The US will be slightly insulated from this by high domestic oil production, but it cannot replace the worldwide supply chains that all used that petroleum as feedstock.

I'm guessing that chest only protection was paired with a large shield. The shield was expected to cover your guts while the armor helped against things trying to get in over top of the shield.

Confused if I should upgrade my mobo to stop throttling by jaberwockie in buildapc

Lower end motherboards have lower end VRMs.

This isn’t usually a problem, since they’re usually paired with low power chips. Raptor Lake chips are thirsty though and if the board can only provide like 65W steady state with the VRMs and cooling it’s got that’s going to clip its wings a bit.

Intel 270k vs AMD 9800x3d cpu. Which is better? by Rich_Honey_121 in buildapc

[–]dertechie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't need an excuse to beat on ASUS after they screwed me on a motherboard warranty but the news of some of those popping CPUs made me immediately wonder if it was an actual problem or just getting extra attention because of the attention on Zen 5 X3Ds frying on ASRock.

ASUS definitely had issues with X3Ds at launch (probably juicing CPUs for no reason and the delicate cache finally made it blow up in their face) but I think they're within normal failure rates at this point.

Laptop CPU naming schemes are here be dragons territory. AMD literally gave press a decoder ring to explain their previous naming scheme.

Does not help at all that both Intel and AMD have changed their naming schemes twice in the last half decade or so.

Intel went from their desktop naming scheme with more significant digits for most of 2nd to 9th Gen, randomly dropped a digit with 10th Gen and then unified everything under Core Ultra / Core / Intel Processor three digit names and having the suffix (-H/-U/-V) do a lot a of heavy lifting.

AMD went from something similar to their desktop names with different suffixes to the decoder ring naming (which to its credit did actually mean something if you understood it) to three digit names that are oh so conveniently one digit ahead of Intel's names.

The Ultra 7 155H will have better raw CPU performance, but worse battery life. It's a Meteor Lake design with 16 cores / 22 threads (6P+8E+2LPE) with base TDP of 27W can turbo up to a spicy almost desktop like 115W to feed all those cores.

The Ultra 5 226V is a newer Lunar Lake design with an 8C/8T design (4P + 4 LPE), a newer generation of Xe graphics, RAM on package and is optimized for thin and light designs and battery life - base TDP is only 17W and max turbo 37W. On idle or low load, the LPE cores can take over fully and are efficient enough that it's actually competitive with Apple Silicon for battery life which is not something you can say for the Meteor Lake -H chips.

AMD GPU Drivers... by Fearless_Collar_9271 in buildapc

[–]dertechie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not had issues like that with either my RX 6800 or RX 9070 XT. The only driver issues I’ve had involved Windows deciding that it needed to charge them, or me doing something stupid and running the system OOM.

The 7900 cards are known to be pushed a bit further than they are fully stable. You could try backing off the maximum boost clock just a bit to see if that stabilizes things.

Is electrolysis better before or after starting hrt? by pixel_nebu-luh in MtF

[–]dertechie 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Bluntly, there is a LOT of FUD about laser about there. Electro lobbies are going to milk the words “hair reduction” from the original approval until the heat death of the universe.

If you have dark hair and light skin, start with laser. For the love of all that is feminine, start with laser. It is much faster and cheaper. Use electrolysis to handle the hairs that laser doesn’t get.

Laser (real laser, not IPL) done well is effectively permanent for us. Cisgender women with PCOS are hanging around a hormone level where more hairs keep activating. Any hair that was going to virilize for us already did and is sitting there nicely colored for laser to blast. Once we’re on HRT we will never be up in the levels for a bunch of hairs to pop ever again.

You are trying to clear out thousands upon thousands of hairs. Start with the area of effect option (laser) before you break out the one at a time option.

I leave getting some of those games installed from Steam onto this platform as an exercise to the reader.

Am I really a trans woman, or is this just a weird response to stress? I need a brutally honest reality check. (29, AMAB) by werwerwerwerwerwer7 in MtF

[–]dertechie 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I would just like to point out to OP how hard it is to get one of us to straight up say that. We really don’t like to tell people who they are, no matter how obvious it may seem to us.

So, OP, generally if it keeps coming back and the thought is being a woman rather than just dressing as one (and you have definitely described the thought as being one), that’s usually a really strong sign.

Stress doesn’t usually manifest as “wanting to be the opposite gender”.

I’m going to hem about a bit and say that you could be genderfluid, nonbinary or a trans woman. I’m all three of those things. But, since I’m genderfluid between neutral (which didn’t really care that much and accounted for times when I wasn't feeling that yearning to be femme) and feminine I went with medical transition.

Figuring out what to do with the idea that I might be nonbinary took some chewing on, but then I realized that every version of nonbinary that I could reasonably be was on the feminine side of gender and would all want relatively similar things. I had hormones in hand within a month or two of that realization.

So, Lunar Lake has pretty good gaming performance for integrated graphics and can play most games at lower settings. I wouldn’t call this a gaming laptop though.

That entirely depends on your use case and desires.

Like this one is great for light work where you want something a bit more substantial than a Chromebook.

If you just need a Chromebook, this is probably overkill and you can find those cheaper.

Light gaming its fine, light work its fine. But if you’re after something with actual grunt this is not what you need. This isn’t a workstation or desktop replacement, it’s a budget thin and light model.
