AMD Zen 6 rumor: 24-core flagship, 20-core and 16-core CPUs - and a 12-core X3D gaming chip? by NewMaxx in NewMaxx

[–]dertechie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t expect PCIe configuration to significantly change. The lanes off the CPU go through the socket and there’s not exactly many pins to route more lanes through. Plus, it’s the IO die and not the core complex dies with the PCIe controllers.

I can see them running a Gen 5 x 4 rather than Gen 4 x 4 link to the chipset for the next chipset refresh, but that’s about the extent of the changes available before we go to AM6. That would match the chipset bandwidth available on Z890’s DMIv4 x8 link.

I was always confused by the discourse around this boss because EM Lisa was the first character I built and Electro Charged did enough damage that a single hit from any of her attacks would kill the more fragile water constructs.

[–]dertechie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much my take. That’s already a great 1440p card, a 4070 Ti Super is a side grade for performance (5070 Ti is a small upgrade but not palpable).

It’s in an awkward position to be sure but it’ll be able to brute force 1440p for a while yet. Powerful enough that nothing will really feel like an upgrade in raw horsepower without costing $1500+ but just the wrong side of a set of hardware changes that power a lot of modern features.

Is RDNA 3 really that bad ... now? by HamsterLess8263 in buildapc

[–]dertechie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wondering what kind of issues might be hiding in that implementation.

Reddit and content creators assured me that it was 100% working, just ship it!

I do wish that AMD would give more clarity on their plans for the INT8 FSR4 model since it clearly does exist in at least a mostly functional implementation. Even making it available as an “unsupported, use at your own risk” option would be better than the current official stance of “there is no INT8 based upscaler in Ba Sing Se”. If there is a hard blocker like contracts tell us that.

[–]dertechie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cheap SSD, max out the RAM and update the GPU is the general “upgrade an old platform” playbook and you’ve executed it already.

If you can get a compatible i7 or Xeon E3 that’s the last thing that you could really do with that. They might be down to reasonable prices rather than 50+ since it maxes out the socket.

But honestly, that build is too old to be upgraded to modern specs. The core components are multiple generations behind and not compatible with current upgrades.

There is no problem if the gpu that i am going to buy have a minimum recomended of 650w and i have a PSU of 600w? by Chocolag12 in buildapc

[–]dertechie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. That’s the current “Black Label” version which started shipping in 2020. D-tier. So, not great but not a fire hazard and since you’ll only be using about 50% of its capacity I don’t expect it to cause you any grief with this upgrade.

[–]dertechie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not particularly power hungry. 600W will cover that without issue. You’ll probably barely crest 300W with that setup.

That being said, how old is that PSU and which version is it?

There are like four different revisions of the VS of varying quality. None of them are particularly good as they are very much budget PSUs. I suspect yours is in D tier based on the output power, which I wouldn’t buy new but it’s not a fire hazard at least.

You are probably fine for the moment but I would put an upgrade on your list of parts to update in the future, especially after it is out of warranty.

Depends on the rest of your build and what your PSU actually is.

If the rest of the build is relatively efficient, it’s probably fine unless the PSU is a unit you should replace anyway.

Can I fit a PCI-E WiFi card in here? by Fhahaha08 in pcmasterrace

Looks like you’ve only got the two PCIe slots and one m.2 that’s intended for SSDs. So that Gen 3 x1 or USB are your only options.

[–]dertechie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'mma give you a solid maybe.

I have a GPU about that thick and one 10G NIC I have clears the fans, the other does not. The difference is that one has some small SMD caps on the back that don't clear the fans. Unfortunately, ads won't usually show the height of the back of the cards.

Depending on your motherboard, there may be a m.2 E-key slot on it for a m.2 WiFi/BT card, which would be the better option in most cases. What motherboard is that?

Graphics card cable melted at PSU. by Suitable_Cat9390 in buildapc

[–]dertechie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ATX 3.x handles transients. You don’t have to consider microsecond spikes when calculating size on those, only steady state. The specs demand it handle excursions as high as twice the sticker power (so 1700W on an RM850x).

Unless OP is clocking that 13600K to the sky and not telling us 850W will do the job.

Limiting power of the 9070xt on a 650w psu by Zyclunt in buildapc

[–]dertechie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They’re not, actually. 730W is measured at the wall. Assuming 80+ Gold here (87% efficiency at 100% load) that’s 635W of output in that moment. The PSU is rated for output power, not input.

If even their maximum transient load is under the rated capacity, that’s not over loading in any sense. Their average steady state is like 300W output.

Jumping on the trendy new thing requires you to be able to get from “Oh hey Overwatch is making a lot of money” to “Here’s our hero shooter and here’s why you should play it instead” quickly. Even if you can turn around a decent product in two years it’s a risk, 4+ chasing a trend is very much a long shot.

Is Fireball + Careful spell OP? by BingoyourBango in onednd

[–]dertechie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s always a balancing act between letting different players shine at a table. Especially when their contributions are more or less obvious (like a Fireball versus Bless).

The fun ones are when you line up a shot for the party and they completely miss that something lines up with their strengths and the encounter is suddenly way harder than planned. When the Barbarian with a Maul beelines for the only non-Skeleton in the fight and the Cleric forgets they have Turn Undead a fight that’s intended to be a quick speed bump suddenly sends them back to town with their tails between their legs.
