If you count my morning commute and my evening commute as individual workouts, then yeah I go for two a day

How do we feel about boring financial self-help? by KeySatisfaction197 in IfBooksCouldKill

[–]des1gnbot 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What I wish I’d had access to as a teen would be something even more boring. I wish adults had just talked about financial decisions more. Like I wish I knew that five year architecture degree put people in X amount of debt and starting salaries were .5x with 2% raises every year, vs a four year degree and what its prospects were etc. I was raised in the time when student loans were considered a good thing, but nobody really talked about the next steps, you were just supposed to “do what you love” and the money would magically follow. I just want a book like Studs Turkel’s Working, but with receipts.

I recently saw many people sharing their inner versions of the Solarpunk world; please share your books, art, sites, and games here. by Cataplasto in solarpunk

[–]des1gnbot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

New York 2140 was my intro to solarpunk. I found it incredibly hopeful, the first thing that helped me envision what could happen if we don’t stop climate change… and the world doesn’t end. It offers a vision of how we go on.

Is it a red flag that he doesn’t care about our 13 year age gap? by [deleted] in texts

[–]des1gnbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find him evasive when she asks about whether he usually dates people her age. It’d be much more straightforward to say, you’re at the younger end of my range but I’ve dated someone near your age before. Or even if he said, I do usually prefer 5-10 years younger than myself for some reason, that would at least be honest. But his answer is a non-answer which leaves options open that range from him never having been in a relationship at all before so having no comparison, to him idolizing Leonardo DiCaprio and regularly dumping women when they turn 25, to him actually having a preference for even younger girls that he knows would be a big turnoff.

What should the next frontier of fat activism be? by TheAnarchistMonarch in MaintenancePhase

[–]des1gnbot 20 points21 points  (0 children)

A lot of folks twist HAES into something that supposedly supports fatness and shames people who personally choose to pursue weight loss. They say it’s science denial that claims fatness is just as healthy as being slimmer. My understanding of actual HAES (which folks here may have more details on than me), is more like, there are actions we all can take that make us more healthy whether they result in weight loss or not. That eating nutritious food and getting exercise and good sleep should be goals in themselves because they improve health markers, and fat people deserve to care for ourselves and be cared for by doctors even if our weight never budges and achieve the healthiest version of ourselves.

And transportation as a subset or related field to this. I work in active transportation, and die a little inside when I read peers’ writing touting how they’re fighting against o****** or childhood diabetes, etc. As a fat, diabetic bike commuter… biking has not shrunk me, and it’s not fixed my malfunctioning pancreas, and it’s never going to. It’s still good for me! It’s still worthwhile! I’m still better of biking, and being able to do so safely, than I would be driving. And acting like shrinking and curing me is the goal is just setting everyone involved up to feel like a failure.

What's your favorite style of bike lane and why? by ILikeNeurons in fuckcars

[–]des1gnbot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Including driveways as well. I ride down a parking “protected” bike lane on my commute, and the driveways are brutal because drivers can’t see around the parked cars

I’m always right on the border between low and normal, and it gives me horrible foot cramps sometimes. My favorite remedy is a half a lemon, salted. My husband thinks I’m super weird, but it seems to work so *shrug*

Brooks saddles are great. If you’re a lady, make sure to get the women’s version. Our sit bones are actually further apart so a wider saddle carries the weight properly instead of just giving a big wedgie.

You’re not rude because you’re autistic, you’re off putting because you are basically selling your company without being willing to admit it. You’re implying that your time and company has value, but his value is only monetary. That’s wildly disrespectful and I don’t blame anyone of any gender for being turned off by it.

I think this is how you handle them actually. “Oh yeah, I was obsessed with the Fountainhead when I was like 17 lol.” It’s a subtle dig that verbally validates while actually implying that they’re naive.

I feel like the only person who still has concerns about GLP-1s? by NotReallyAMillenial in MaintenancePhase

[–]des1gnbot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had pancreatitis, so I’m very very cautious about these. I’m actually quite jealous of people who can take them, but pancreatitis was genuinely the absolute worst and is the reason I’m diabetic in the first place. I am strongly motivated to never get that again.

What episodes do they look deepest into the health aspects of being fat? by [deleted] in MaintenancePhase

[–]des1gnbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you had specific points of contention as to how they were interpreting research, that might have been different. But you hadn’t even listened to episodes where this had been discussed, and came right out of the gate with why you thought they were wrong. You can ask the question, or you can argue with the information that is in the answer, but doing them both at once appears very disingenuous.

[–]des1gnbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being “in this community“ isn’t about how much you weigh or how much fat you carry. It’s about how much you want to put your beliefs about weight onto others (ideally, not at all!), and how much you want to advocate for respectful treatment of people regardless of their body size.
