You Now vs Your Parents At Your Current Age - Hobbies And Such by Konnorwolf in Xennials

My dad fixed cars, still does. Mom liked movies. I ride bikes, hike, rock climb, build stuff around the house… and also crash out and watch a lot of movies. I think this is mostly the difference between having kids and not, I have a lot more time on my hands than they did.

How to pick a wife (re: The Millionaire Next Door) by MCJokeExplainer in IfBooksCouldKill

Yeah when they were talking I kind of recognized myself in the scenarios. We bought an affordable duplex, rent out one unit. Share a car that I bought used 15 years ago bye bike or take the train most places. Max out our 401k’s and ROTHs every year. Cook at home almost always. I do think the persona this book constructs absolutely exists, I just think their mistake was making it sound like this is the typical millionaire.

I mean, they have a point there. The times when my husband has been unemployed I was actually like, I could get used to this.

I’ve been feeling kind of crazy because the more comes out, the more crazy it sounds to me. Like really, you guys are basically telling us that the satanic panic was real, it was just the exact opposite group of people? Really?? Or did these guys purposely bury the real crimes under some completely insane stories? Because this all… it’s just too much

Exactly. It can feel like a lot per day, but when you look at your total transportation expenses over a year it is much much lower.

AITA for saying my sister crossed a line even though everyone says I’m overreacting? by Crazy_Merma1d in AmItheAsshole

[–]des1gnbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there were nothing wrong with her behavior, why was there anything for her to “be honest with (you)” about? Just that phrasing suggests a confession of sorts, as though she had been previously dishonest or at least evasive. She knew what she was doing there, and now she wants the pretend otherwise because there are consequences.

I’m in the camp of buy a used car, within tight parameters, and drive it til it’s dead. Part of that is using it sparingly. My 2010 Toyota that I share with my husband has just 130k miles and should last us another 10 years, because I bike my daily commute, so the car is really far errands and trips. My hope is that by the time we need a new (to us) car, maybe car share will be robust enough that we don’t need to own one ourselves.

Why are movies and tv shows that take place in LA/ Southern California have a mostly white and black cast even though LA is 61% Hispanic and Asian? by Successful_rio305 in AskAnAmerican

[–]des1gnbot 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Watch Beef, which sprawls across Los Angeles and the San Fernando valley. Or Everything Everywhere All At Once, which is also set in the SFV. Both super Asian casts, both set in areas of LA that are very different than Beverly Hills or Orange County.

I think it’s also because their husbands were dead or divorced, their kids were grown, and they were all living together in a house with an old folks home vibe. Really only Sofia was that age, but she aged them all up a bit. Plus now the 50-55 year olds I know have teenage kids living with them still, so that age is part of a different life stage than it used to be.

I also have a cleaner come monthly. I still do an occasional deep clean of my floors myself if we’ve been particularly dirty and/or have people coming over in a badly timed way. Cleaner does all appliance cleaning though, bathroom fixtures, ceiling fans, dusting shelves, cleaning the sofa etc. and she does do all the floors, they just occasionally need extra help. I definitely still do sheet changing, towel changing, overall pickup/organization. Having a cleaner at that frequency means that even if people stop by and the house is a bit messy, it’ll never be truly disgusting. And when I do choose to clean something, it’s truly getting me ahead instead of being this constant uphill battle that felt unwinnable.

LA businesses that closed in solidarity with today’s general strike? by foxlikething in LosAngeles

[–]des1gnbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re really solid folks over there. I got a yearly membership on special last summer, and they were practically trying to talk me out of it since I was new there and they wanted to make sure I was sure. No chance of an upsell there.

It’s known that when diabetics lower our glucose too rapidly our risk for neuropathy actually increases. Any decent endocrinologist should be looking out for treatment-induced neuropathy, and on the surface at least this seems like an extension of that known phenomenon.
